Last Shift (2014) Ending Explained: The Haunted Police Station, Paymon Cult and Jessica’s Tragic Fate (Spoilers)

Some horror movies need a haunted mansion, an isolated forest or an ancient cemetery to create fear. Last Shift proves that an almost-empty police station can be just as terrifying.

Directed by Anthony DiBlasi, Last Shift is a psychological supernatural horror film starring Juliana Harkavy as rookie police officer Jessica Loren. What begins as a simple overnight assignment gradually becomes a nightmare filled with disturbing phone calls, ghostly figures, hallucinations and the dark history of a murderous cult.

Jessica Loren’s First—and Last—Night at the Station

Jessica Loren arrives at an old police station for what should be a straightforward first assignment. The department is moving to a newer building, and Jessica simply has to remain at the old station until a HAZMAT team arrives to collect material still stored in evidence.

There is one important rule: she must stay at her post.

At first, nothing seems particularly dangerous. But Jessica soon notices that something is wrong. Doors appear to move, strange noises echo through empty corridors, and a homeless man repeatedly creates trouble inside the building.

Then the phone begins ringing.

A frightened teenage girl named Monica calls the station claiming she has been kidnapped and needs help. This makes little sense because emergency calls are supposed to have been redirected to the new police station.

Jessica initially believes there must be a logical explanation, but the night becomes increasingly impossible to explain.

Who Was John Michael Paymon?

The terrifying events are connected to John Michael Paymon, the leader of a violent cult.

Jessica learns that Paymon and his followers were responsible for several murders. Her own father, who was also a police officer, died during the operation connected to the cult.

The official version of events does not tell the entire story.

Paymon and two followers were eventually brought to the police station alive. Instead of dying during their capture, they later committed suicide while being held inside the station.

Even more disturbing, Jessica happens to be working there on the anniversary of their deaths.

The abandoned station is therefore not simply an old building. It is the location where the Paymon cult's final ritual—and perhaps the beginning of its supernatural presence—took place.

Who Is Monica Young?

One of the movie’s creepiest mysteries involves Monica Young.

Jessica repeatedly receives desperate calls from Monica, believing that she may still be able to rescue her. Eventually, however, Jessica contacts the other station and learns a horrifying truth.

Monica cannot be calling her.

She was one of the Paymon cult's victims and died roughly a year earlier.

The calls are therefore either supernatural communication from Monica or another part of the paranormal forces manipulating Jessica.

By this stage, Jessica can no longer reliably distinguish between living people, ghosts and hallucinations.

The Truth About Officer Ryan

Another important moment comes when Officer Ryan Price visits Jessica.

Ryan knew Jessica’s father and tells her more about what happened during the operation against Paymon's group. For a brief moment, his presence gives Jessica someone trustworthy to speak with.

But as Ryan leaves, Jessica notices a devastating injury on the back of his head.

Then he disappears.

Ryan was never physically standing there.

His appearance confirms that the station is capable of creating incredibly convincing supernatural manifestations. This revelation is also important for understanding the ending: if Jessica cannot recognize that Ryan is dead, she cannot necessarily trust anyone—or anything—she sees inside the station.

Why Doesn't Jessica Simply Leave?

As the paranormal activity intensifies, Jessica tries to escape, but the station seems unwilling to release her.

Her fear is also mixed with her desire to prove herself as a police officer and honor her father's legacy. The supernatural forces use this emotional connection against her.

Eventually, Jessica even receives what appears to be communication from her dead father, encouraging her to fight.

Instead of helping Jessica, the message pushes her deeper into the trap.

That is exactly what Paymon's presence appears to want.

Last Shift Ending Explained

The final sequence reveals the cruelest part of Paymon's plan.

Jessica believes cult members are attacking the police station. Armed and terrified, she fights back and shoots the figures she sees moving through the building.

From Jessica's perspective, she is defending herself against murderous followers of Paymon.

Then Sergeant Cohen arrives.

He shoots Jessica.

Only now does reality finally break through the hallucination.

The people Jessica believed were cult members were actually the HAZMAT workers she had been waiting for throughout the entire night.

Jessica has killed innocent people.

The ghosts did not need to physically murder Jessica. Instead, they manipulated her senses until she became the weapon.

This makes the ending significantly darker than a conventional ghost attack. Paymon destroys Jessica by convincing her that she is fighting evil while she is actually committing a massacre.

Does Jessica Die?

The ending strongly indicates that Jessica dies from the gunshot wound inflicted by Cohen.

As she lies wounded, she sees Paymon and the cult around her. Her behavior also suggests that their psychological or supernatural influence has finally consumed her.

There is no heroic victory.

Jessica spends the entire night trying to maintain control, follow police procedure and live up to her father's reputation. In the end, those same instincts are twisted against her.

The cult wins.

Was Everything a Hallucination?

The movie deliberately blurs the difference between supernatural activity and psychological breakdown, but the story strongly suggests that genuine paranormal forces are involved.

Jessica encounters information and apparitions that cannot easily be explained as ordinary stress. The dead Ryan appears to her, Monica's calls continue despite her death, and the station's connection to Paymon repeatedly manifests throughout the night.

However, the ghosts appear able to manipulate Jessica's perception.

That explains the final massacre.

The HAZMAT workers are physically real, but Jessica sees them as cult members. Paymon does not completely replace reality—he changes how Jessica experiences it.

The Real Meaning of the Ending

Last Shift is ultimately about isolation, trauma and the danger of losing trust in your own senses.

Jessica enters the station believing a police uniform, a gun and her training can keep her in control. But none of those things matter when she can no longer determine what is real.

The abandoned police station becomes more than a haunted location. It becomes a psychological prison.

Jessica's connection to her father also makes her the perfect target. Paymon exploits her grief, determination and need to prove herself until she participates in her own destruction.

That final realization—that Jessica was killing innocent people while believing she was protecting herself—is what makes Last Shift such an unsettling horror movie.

The monsters do not simply chase their victim.

They make her believe she has become the hero, right until the moment she realizes she has lost.
