Lanterns Episode 2 Ending Explained: Sinestro, Manhunters and John Stewart’s Hidden Power (Spoilers)
Lanterns Episode 2 deepens the mystery surrounding Rushville as Hal Jordan investigates the Manhunters, John Stewart discovers his extraordinary Green Lantern abilities, and Sinestro finally enters the story.

HBO’s Lanterns continues to expand its Green Lantern mystery in Episode 2, taking the story back to 2016 and revealing that what happened in Rushville may be connected to a much larger conspiracy involving the Manhunters, the Guardians, Abin Sur and even Sinestro.
After the mysteries introduced in the first episode, Lanterns Episode 2 gives John Stewart and Hal Jordan more time together while also introducing new factions with their own reasons for investigating Rushville.
By the ending, Hal’s investigation takes him far beyond Earth as he visits one of the most important characters in Green Lantern mythology.
Spoiler Warning: Major spoilers for Lanterns Episode 2 follow.
John Stewart Begins His Green Lantern Training
The episode begins in 2016, with Hal Jordan continuing to train John Stewart.
However, Hal’s teaching methods are hardly conventional.
Rather than carefully explaining how to use the Green Lantern ring, Hal essentially tells John to think about flying and make it happen.
For Hal, flying comes naturally because of his background as a fighter pilot. John is different. He has spent much of his life facing problems directly rather than escaping them, which may explain why he struggles to imagine himself simply flying away.
But something far more interesting happens.
Instead of immediately taking flight, John accidentally creates a bird construct.
At first, it might seem like a small achievement. In reality, it appears to reveal just how powerful John’s willpower could become.
Why John Stewart’s Bird Construct Is Important
A Green Lantern ring can create constructs based on the imagination and willpower of its wearer.
Usually, those constructs only remain active while the Lantern continues powering them.
John’s bird is different.
The construct appears capable of flying around independently, and John is even able to maintain it while he is no longer wearing the ring.
Hal clearly notices how unusual this is, even if he refuses to openly praise John.
The moment appears to foreshadow John Stewart becoming an exceptionally powerful Green Lantern.
His subconscious creates something that behaves almost like a living creature rather than a simple weapon or object.
The bird may also have a deeper connection to John’s past that has not yet been revealed.
Hal asks him why he created a bird specifically, suggesting that the construct came from something buried in John’s subconscious.
John dismisses the question, and the bird eventually disappears.
But the series appears to be setting up this ability as something much more important than a simple training exercise.
Hal Jordan Continues Investigating Rushville
While John travels to Hal’s home in Coast City to retrieve the Green Lantern battery, Hal continues investigating what happened in Rushville.
The mysterious metal detectors become particularly important.
Hal realizes that neither he nor ordinary metal triggers them. However, the bodies of the suspected aliens do.
That suggests the devices were specifically designed to identify extraterrestrial beings.
This raises an obvious question.
How did William Makin and his people obtain technology capable of identifying aliens?
Makin claims the technology came from a mysterious superior, but refuses to reveal any useful information.
Hal becomes increasingly convinced that Makin knows far more about the situation than he admits.
His aggressive investigation eventually gets him shot, forcing Sheriff Kerry to once again confront him over his reckless methods.
Sheriff Kerry and Hal Jordan Finally Begin Working Together
Sheriff Kerry has spent much of the series trying to keep Hal away from Rushville.
Episode 2 finally explains some of her motivation.
She believes Hal’s behaviour is making the town increasingly unstable and strengthening Makin’s influence.
Instead of helping Rushville, Hal’s constant provocations may be making residents even more paranoid about an alien invasion.
Hal finally accepts that Kerry has a point.
Their relationship begins to improve, and Kerry reveals that she is originally from Gotham.
That detail is another connection to the wider DC Universe.
However, Hal quickly notices something strange about the hospital.
He appears to be the only patient, while much of the medical equipment looks almost completely new.
The episode repeatedly presents small details like this that make Rushville feel increasingly unnatural.
John Stewart Is Kidnapped
John’s journey back to Rushville becomes much more dangerous when he is attacked and kidnapped by a mysterious group.
Their leader, identified as Antan, is shocked by John’s bird construct.
He initially assumes Hal created it from a distance.
When he learns John created the construct himself, Antan realizes that John may possess extraordinary power.
The group then reveals the real reason they kidnapped him.
They want information about the Manhunters.
John has no idea what they are talking about, forcing Antan to explain one of the darkest pieces of Green Lantern history.
What Are the Manhunters?
According to Antan, the Manhunters existed before the Green Lantern Corps.
They were synthetic beings created to bring order to the universe.
However, their interpretation of justice eventually became horrifying.
Rather than protecting life, the Manhunters began destroying entire civilizations.
Antan claims that one surviving Manhunter infiltrated his people and caused the destruction of his home world.
His group eventually traced a radiation signature connected to the Manhunters to Rushville.
That is why they sent aliens to investigate the town.
Those were apparently the same individuals killed during the events surrounding the football field.
Antan now suspects that Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps are protecting the surviving Manhunter.
He gives John only 48 hours to identify it.
If John fails, Antan’s group is prepared to destroy Rushville.
Is Lanterns Setting Up the Red Lanterns?
Antan’s story strongly resembles one of the darkest events from Green Lantern comics: the massacre of Sector 666.
In the comics, the Guardians originally created the Manhunters before eventually replacing them with the Green Lantern Corps.
The Manhunters massacred almost every living being in Sector 666.
Only a handful survived.
One of those survivors was Atrocitus, who eventually became the leader of the Red Lantern Corps.
This makes Antan extremely interesting.
The series has not confirmed that he is Atrocitus, but his story clearly contains similarities to the mythology surrounding the Red Lantern villain.
If this connection becomes official, Lanterns may eventually introduce the Red Lantern Corps and the emotional spectrum that exists beyond Green Lantern willpower.
John could find himself caught between the Green Lanterns and survivors who believe the Guardians covered up one of the greatest crimes in galactic history.
The Manhunter Could Be Hiding in Rushville
The biggest mystery is now the identity of the surviving Manhunter.
The Manhunters are apparently capable of disguising themselves as members of other species, meaning virtually anyone in Rushville could secretly be one.
Several characters immediately become suspicious.
Sheriff Kerry knows more about Green Lantern history than expected.
William Makin has access to advanced alien-detection technology.
Zoe Makin also appears unusually interested in Hal and John.
When John encounters Zoe at a diner, she quickly turns their conversation toward Hal and asks whether John truly trusts him.
Her behaviour suggests that she may be gathering information.
Whether Zoe is the Manhunter, connected to another Green Lantern character, or simply working for her husband remains unanswered.
Could Zoe Be Connected to Sinestro?
Episode 2 also creates an interesting possibility involving Zoe and Sinestro.
Shortly before John meets Zoe, Sinestro becomes an important part of Hal and Kerry’s conversation.
In Green Lantern mythology, Sinestro has a daughter named Soranik Natu.
The episode does not confirm that Zoe is connected to her, and this remains only a theory.
However, if Zoe does have a hidden relationship with Sinestro, her interest in Hal Jordan suddenly becomes much easier to explain.
Hal was responsible for stopping Sinestro.
Someone connected to Sinestro could therefore have several reasons to investigate Hal, John and the mystery surrounding Abin Sur.
For now, Zoe remains one of the most suspicious characters in Rushville.
Hal Learns About the Manhunters
When John finally returns to Hal’s motel, he confronts him about the Manhunters.
Hal’s reaction immediately shows that he knows the name.
John explains the kidnapping and reveals that Antan’s people believe the Green Lanterns may be protecting the surviving Manhunter.
Instead of dismissing the theory completely, Hal realizes that it could explain something that has bothered him for years.
Abin Sur’s death.
Hal has never fully believed that Abin Sur’s crash on Earth was an accident.
If a Manhunter was hiding in Rushville, Hal begins to wonder whether Abin Sur discovered it and was killed because of what he knew.
This potentially connects the current investigation directly to the moment Hal Jordan became a Green Lantern.
John Stewart May Be More Powerful Than Hal Realizes
John also confronts Hal about his bird construct.
His kidnappers told him that maintaining something resembling a living construct without even wearing the ring should be practically impossible.
John is frustrated that Hal never told him how extraordinary the achievement was.
Hal finally acknowledges the construct, although in his usual dismissive way.
This scene feels important for John’s future.
In the comics, John Stewart becomes one of the most powerful Green Lanterns because of the precision and strength of his constructs.
Lanterns appears to be adapting that idea by showing that John possesses incredible natural willpower before he even understands how to properly use the ring.
Hal may already realize that John has the potential to surpass expectations.
Lanterns Episode 2 Ending Explained
The ending sees Hal Jordan make his biggest move yet.
After John goes to bed, Hal finally puts on his Green Lantern uniform and leaves Earth.
He travels to what appears to be an isolated prison containing dangerous cosmic prisoners.
Hal enters one particular cell and identifies himself.
Inside is Sinestro.
It is the first major appearance of Hal Jordan’s legendary enemy in the series.
Hal has come because he needs information about the Manhunters.
Instead of immediately answering, Sinestro asks about John Stewart.
That question completely changes the meaning of the scene.
Sinestro already appears to know something about John.
The question is whether he sees John as a threat, an opportunity or part of something much larger.
Why Sinestro Asking About John Stewart Matters
Sinestro’s interest in John suggests that John’s arrival may be more important than either John or Hal currently understands.
The episode has already established that John can perform an extremely advanced Green Lantern ability almost instinctively.
Antan recognizes it.
Hal recognizes it.
And now Sinestro appears interested in him before John has even truly become a Green Lantern.
There may therefore be a larger reason John received the ring.
The series could be building toward a conflict involving multiple Lantern factions, with John becoming the person caught at the center.
Is Lanterns Setting Up Blackest Night?
Another major possibility is that the series is slowly building toward Blackest Night.
Blackest Night is one of the most famous Green Lantern comic storylines and revolves around the different Corps of the emotional spectrum eventually being pulled into a massive cosmic conflict.
Episode 2 has already introduced or teased several pieces that could eventually connect to such a storyline.
We have the Green Lantern Corps.
There are possible connections to Atrocitus and the Red Lanterns.
Sinestro has now entered the story.
Abin Sur’s mysterious death remains central to the investigation.
And the Manhunters appear connected to secrets the Guardians may have tried to hide.
That does not mean Lanterns will directly adapt Blackest Night.
The series could significantly change the comic mythology.
But the amount of Green Lantern history now surrounding Rushville suggests that this small-town investigation could eventually become something much larger.
What Happens Next in Lanterns?
Episode 2 leaves both Hal Jordan and John Stewart facing major problems.
John has only 48 hours to find the surviving Manhunter before Antan’s group takes drastic action against Rushville.
Hal must discover what really happened to Abin Sur.
William Makin still has access to mysterious alien technology.
Zoe’s motivations remain unclear.
Sheriff Kerry appears to know more than expected.
And Sinestro has officially entered the story.
Most importantly, John Stewart is beginning to understand that his Green Lantern abilities may be far more powerful than anyone initially expected.
Lanterns Episode 2 therefore transforms the Rushville mystery from a simple investigation into a story involving some of the biggest elements of Green Lantern mythology.
The Manhunters, Sinestro, Abin Sur and possible Red Lantern connections all appear to be converging on the same mystery.
And with Sinestro’s final question about John Stewart, the biggest mystery may no longer be what is hiding in Rushville.
It may be why John Stewart is so important in the first place.
