Lady Vengeance Ending Explained: Geum-ja’s Revenge, Mr. Baek’s Crimes, and the Meaning of Tofu (spoiler)
After spending thirteen years in prison for a murder she did not commit, Lee Geum-ja executes a terrifying revenge plan—but the movie’s ending is about much more than punishment.

Major Spoiler Warning: This article reveals the complete story and ending of Lady Vengeance.
Lady Vengeance, officially titled Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, is a disturbing Korean revenge thriller about guilt, punishment, motherhood and the impossible search for redemption.
At the centre of the story is Lee Geum-ja, a woman who has spent thirteen years in prison after confessing to the kidnapping and murder of a young boy. To the public, she is a cold-blooded killer. To the prison’s religious community, however, she appears to be a completely reformed woman.
But Geum-ja’s transformation is not as genuine as everyone believes.
Geum-ja Leaves Prison After Thirteen Years
The movie begins outside a prison, where a Christian group waits for Geum-ja’s release. A preacher who has guided her during her sentence believes that he has successfully removed the evil from her soul.
He welcomes her with a block of white tofu.
In Korean culture, eating tofu after leaving prison represents purity and the beginning of a clean life. Geum-ja reaches toward it, but instead of eating it, she drops it to the ground.
This small act immediately reveals the truth: Geum-ja has not returned to begin a peaceful life. She has returned to complete the revenge plan she has been developing for thirteen years.
During her imprisonment, Geum-ja carefully built relationships with other prisoners. She donated a kidney to one woman, protected another from abuse and secretly killed a violent inmate who terrorised the weaker prisoners.
Her kindness was not entirely fake, but it also had a purpose. Geum-ja knew that she would eventually need loyal people to help her after her release.
Why Did Geum-ja Confess to the Murder?
Geum-ja was only a young woman when she became pregnant. After being abandoned by her family and boyfriend, she sought help from her former teacher, Mr. Baek.
Instead of protecting her, Baek sexually exploited and manipulated her.
Baek later ordered Geum-ja to kidnap a young boy named Won-mo as part of a ransom plan. Geum-ja believed the child would be returned after the money was received. However, Baek murdered the boy because he would not stop crying.
Children had seen Geum-ja during the kidnapping, making her the police’s main suspect. Baek then threatened to kill Geum-ja’s baby daughter unless she accepted responsibility for the entire crime.
To save her daughter, Geum-ja falsely confessed and received a thirteen-year prison sentence. Baek kept his promise to leave the baby alive, placing her in an orphanage where she was eventually adopted by an Australian couple.
Geum-ja therefore entered prison not simply as a criminal, but as a terrified mother sacrificing her freedom to save her child.
Geum-ja Prepares Her Revenge
After leaving prison, Geum-ja contacts several former inmates who owe her favours. One helps manufacture a specially designed gun, while another creates a decorative piece for the weapon.
Geum-ja also finds her daughter, Jenny, who is living in Australia with loving adoptive parents. Although Jenny has been given a comfortable life, she feels abandoned by her biological mother.
Geum-ja cannot fully explain her disappearance without revealing the horrifying truth about Baek. Jenny nevertheless insists on returning to Korea with her, even threatening to hurt herself when Geum-ja initially refuses.
Their reunion gives Geum-ja something she has not experienced in years: a possible future beyond revenge. However, it also makes her mission more dangerous.
Mr. Baek Discovers the Plan
Geum-ja receives assistance from a former prisoner who has married Mr. Baek and secretly wants to escape his abuse. Together, the women plan to drug and capture him.
However, the preacher who once believed Geum-ja had become an angel discovers her secret meeting and sells the information to Baek. Baek hires two men to kidnap Geum-ja and Jenny.
The attackers underestimate her.
Using her custom-made gun, Geum-ja kills both men and saves her daughter. She then reaches Baek’s home, where his wife has successfully drugged him.
Geum-ja ties Baek up and transports him to an abandoned building in a snowy forest—the same place that has repeatedly appeared in her dreams.
It appears that her thirteen-year revenge plan is finally approaching its conclusion.
Geum-ja Discovers Baek’s Other Victims
Geum-ja initially believes Baek murdered only Won-mo. However, she notices several small children’s toys attached to his phone.
Each object belonged to a different victim.
Baek had kidnapped and murdered several children, keeping one item from each child as a trophy. Even more horrifyingly, he recorded videos of himself torturing and killing them.
Geum-ja contacts the detective who investigated her original case. The detective had always suspected she was not the real murderer, but her confession prevented him from proving it.
Together, they identify the families of Baek’s victims and invite them to the abandoned building.
Why Do the Parents Kill Mr. Baek?
The parents are shown the videos of their children’s final moments. They see Baek’s face and learn exactly what he did.
Geum-ja gives them two options.
They can hand Baek over to the authorities, where he may spend the rest of his life in prison. Alternatively, they can punish him themselves and guarantee that he never hurts another child.
After an emotional discussion, the families choose revenge.
They wear protective clothing and enter Baek’s room one at a time, attacking him with different weapons. They are instructed not to kill him immediately because every family deserves an opportunity to confront the man who destroyed their lives.
Eventually, one grieving mother drives a pair of scissors into his neck, ending his life.
The parents clean the room, bury Baek’s body and take a group photograph. The photograph ensures that everyone shares responsibility and prevents any participant from later betraying the others.
Before Baek’s body is completely covered, Geum-ja fires several bullets into it. She laughs and cries at the same time, releasing thirteen years of rage, pain and helplessness.
Lady Vengeance Ending Explained
After Baek’s death, the families gather at a café. They light candles, share a cake and pray for their children.
It is not a celebration of murder. It is a private funeral for the children whose lives were stolen and whose suffering had remained hidden for years.
Later, snow begins falling as Geum-ja reunites with Jenny. Geum-ja offers her daughter a piece of white tofu. She tells Jenny to eat it only when she is ready to accept her as her mother and leave the painful past behind.
Jenny eats the tofu and then gives some to Geum-ja.
This moment reverses the opening scene. When the preacher offered Geum-ja tofu outside prison, she rejected it because her mission was unfinished. She could not pretend to be purified while Baek remained free and her daughter still believed she had been abandoned.
At the end, Geum-ja finally accepts the tofu from Jenny. Her revenge is complete, her daughter knows the truth and she can finally attempt to build a new life.
However, the ending does not suggest that Geum-ja has suddenly become innocent. Baek’s death cannot restore the murdered children, erase her imprisonment or remove the violence she committed.
The falling snow represents the purity Geum-ja desperately wants but may never completely achieve.
Final Thoughts
Lady Vengeance is not a simple story in which a hero defeats a villain. Geum-ja is compassionate, manipulative, violent and emotionally broken at the same time.
Her revenge gives justice to the victims’ families, but it does not fully free her from guilt. Even after killing Baek, she still carries the pain of the kidnapped child, the years stolen from her and the childhood she could not share with Jenny.
The final tofu scene offers hope rather than complete forgiveness. Geum-ja cannot rewrite her past, but with Jenny beside her, she may finally have a reason to create a different future.
