Knives Out: Glass Onion

One movie that we didn’t get to see in theaters but finally watched on Netflix is Knives Out: Glass Onion. The first thing that comes to my attention is the insanely amazing casting in this movie. Leslie Odom Jr. is my favorite human on the planet, having him and Kathryn Hahn in the same movie was an incredible experience.

Our four main characters get this mysterious box that has different puzzles that they have to unlock, it's a very involved process. When the box finally opens up it's an invitation to a private island where we have already been informed that there has been a murder. There is a 5th character that received this box and instead of solving puzzles she simply smashes it with a hammer until she reaches the invitation.

I think it's interesting how they decided to incorporate quarantine and covid, like obviously we knew that our media was gonna acknowledge it but I think most of us were hoping that they wouldn't make it a center point of any stories. But it has seemed to creep its way into our media with no restraints.

Detective Blanc being very out of place among the uber-rich is super funny. Tensions were built up very well, between the group and Miles, other members of the group, Blanc and the rest of the group. It's set up very well.

Blanc was not invited to the island, but the host seems rather excited about it.

This poor girl, Miles’ ex-partner is clearly very angry and it already feels rightfully so. We have no details but I’m already on her side.

Klear is apparently a bad idea, god one thing I love about movies and TV is that without all of the information the audience is only left with the characters reactions to things to tell us how we should feel.

The way Blanc solves the murder before it even occurs is so hilarious. Miles was so mad and it was so wonderful. Great moment.

Also the people complaining about the complexity of this film or the lack thereof are brain dead and didn’t pay attention to the film at all. They tell you not to overanalyze in the damn dialogue. Blanc says, out of his face with his words, “I like the glass onion, something that seems dense but in reality is crystal clear” translation for the people who think their film buffs but really just don’t have any idea what they are talking about; The movie is not that deep, it is exactly what it's showing you it is.

When an actual crime is committed Blanc jumps right into action and Miles realizes that the murder was meant for him. The twist in this was incredible, look the “twin” trope is wildly overused and is mostly executed very poorly but this was great. These Knives Out movies did an incredible job of taking inspiration from clue and Agatha Christie novels and bringing them to life. A truly well written murder mystery is very rare and they are going so well.

The story was once again intricate and well written giving every single one of the main character's motive and opportunity and giving them personalities and a past that makes them all look as equally guilty. The ending was brilliant and a friendly reminder that sometimes we have to make our own justice.

I loved the film, it was exactly what it was, nothing more and nothing less. Films like this do not need to be analyzed to death, yet the internet tried of course. Overall I think it was a 9/10, there was nothing wrong with it but I also don't think it's going to be one of my most re-watched films ever.
