What begins as Amir’s desperate attempt to save his family gradually turns him into one of the most influential names in the gold-smuggling business.

However, power comes with consequences.

By the time Amir realizes how far he has traveled from the peaceful life he once wanted, his enemies have already turned his family, his closest friend and even the law against him.

And just when the conflict appears to be over, Khalifa delivers its biggest surprise by revealing that Amir may not even be the most dangerous member of his own family.

Why Is Jeethu Arrested at the Beginning of Khalifa?

The story begins when Jeethu returns from the Gulf to Kerala for his sister’s wedding.

Jeethu is not just an ordinary friend of Amir Ali. He was once one of Amir’s closest associates during the period when Amir controlled a huge gold-smuggling operation.

On the night the wedding ends, police suddenly arrest Jeethu and secretly take him into custody.

There he meets politician Raghavan.

Raghavan reveals that Jeethu’s arrest is part of a much bigger plan. He wants to use Jeethu to force Amir to leave London and return to India.

Raghavan could have tried to assassinate Amir abroad, and in fact an attempt has already been made. A group of killers attacked Amir in London, but Amir defeated them all.

Raghavan therefore wants something more personal.

He wants Amir back in India, where he can destroy him face-to-face.

Then Raghavan tells Jeethu something devastating: Amir himself was responsible for getting him arrested.

Jeethu refuses to believe it until he speaks directly to Amir.

Shockingly, Amir admits it.

Jeethu believes his best friend has betrayed him, allowing the authorities to pressure him into revealing Amir’s entire history.

That takes the story years into the past.

Amir Ali Was Never Supposed to Become a Smuggler

Before entering the criminal world, Amir lives a surprisingly simple life.

He owns a clothing shop and has no interest in joining the successful jewellery business run by his father, Yusuf Ali.

Amir wants to build something of his own.

He gets married and seems perfectly happy living with his wife, family and Jeethu.

Everything changes when Amir discovers that his father is facing a serious financial crisis.

Yusuf has been involved in major government contracts and has accumulated significant debt. He is depending on an incoming shipment to stabilize his business and repay what he owes.

Desperate for help, Yusuf approaches politician Raghavan.

Raghavan promises that his connections inside customs will ensure the shipment is cleared.

Instead, Yusuf walks directly into a trap.

Why Was Yusuf Ali Framed?

When Yusuf and Amir reach the harbor, customs officers inspect their container.

Inside they discover an antique watch that was never listed as part of Yusuf’s shipment.

Hidden inside the watch are gold biscuits.

Yusuf insists he knows nothing about them, but he is immediately arrested and publicly branded as a gold smuggler.

The accusation becomes even more damaging when authorities reveal Yusuf’s family history.

Yusuf’s father, Ahmed Ali, was once a feared international criminal and smuggler who is now imprisoned in Nepal.

Because of that history, authorities find it easy to suggest that Yusuf has simply followed in his father’s footsteps.

But Yusuf is innocent.

While in prison, he tells Amir what really happened.

Months earlier, Raghavan and powerful businessman Harish Bashir had approached Yusuf with a proposal. Because Yusuf regularly imported goods, they wanted to use his containers to secretly bring gold into India.

Yusuf refused.

He had spent his life trying to avoid becoming like his criminal father, Ahmed Ali.

His refusal made him an obstacle.

So Raghavan and Harish planted gold inside his shipment and destroyed his reputation.

Ironically, their attempt to punish Yusuf creates an even more dangerous enemy: Amir.

How Does Amir Enter the Gold-Smuggling Business?

Amir desperately needs money and influence to save his father.

An elderly employee from Yusuf’s jewellery business reminds Amir of his grandfather’s reputation and sends him to meet Seth Ji, an important gold supplier whose business has also suffered because of Raghavan and Harish.

Amir makes Seth Ji an offer.

He will successfully bring Seth Ji’s gold into India if Seth Ji helps him get Yusuf out of prison.

Amir and Jeethu travel to the Gulf.

Their first plan involves disguising gold in the shape of batteries used inside old keypad phones.

However, Raghavan’s network learns about the operation and informs airport customs.

When Amir lands in India, customs officials aggressively search him.

They even inspect his mobile phone.

But the battery inside is completely normal.

The officers have been fooled.

Amir had anticipated the inspection. Several passengers traveling alongside him were secretly working for him, and the phones containing the gold had already been distributed among them.

While customs concentrated entirely on Amir, his people quietly carried the gold out of the airport.

The operation proves that Amir possesses the intelligence and instincts required to survive in the smuggling world.

Seth Ji sees something familiar in him.

Amir has inherited Ahmed Ali’s mind.

How Amir Becomes a Gold-Smuggling Kingpin

Amir initially enters smuggling to save his family, but he quickly becomes extremely successful.

He clears the family’s debts and helps secure Yusuf’s release on bail.

Then the operation grows.

Amir develops connections with customs officers, airline employees and other people who can move gold through airports.

Soon he is bringing enormous quantities of gold into India.

What started as desperation becomes an empire.

But Yusuf is devastated.

His entire life had been built around avoiding his father Ahmed Ali’s criminal legacy. Now, because of Yusuf’s problems, his own son has entered the exact world he wanted his family to escape.

That guilt begins consuming him.

Meanwhile, Amir and Seth Ji become powerful enough to threaten Raghavan and Harish Bashir’s existing gold business.

Why Do Raghavan and Harish Want Amir Dead?

As Amir’s network expands, retailers increasingly begin purchasing gold through Seth Ji.

Raghavan and Harish start losing control of the market.

They first attempt to negotiate with Seth Ji, asking him to reduce his rates.

Seth Ji refuses.

Harish responds by sending a contract killer after him.

Although Seth Ji survives, he is seriously injured.

Amir understands exactly who is responsible.

Instead of immediately killing his enemies, Amir attacks Raghavan politically.

He creates circumstances that damage Raghavan’s public image so badly that Raghavan is expelled from his political party.

Now the conflict becomes deeply personal.

What Happens to Raghavan’s Son?

Raghavan and Harish send Raghavan’s violent son to steal one of Amir’s gold shipments.

During the attack, Amir’s vehicle is deliberately crashed.

A female air hostess working with Amir dies in the incident.

Her death hits Amir particularly hard because she had told him that it would be her final assignment. She had earned enough money and wanted to leave the criminal business, get married and live normally.

She never gets that opportunity.

Raghavan’s people then threaten Amir, saying they will steal every future gold shipment arriving through the airport.

Amir responds by setting a trap.

He personally transports a shipment, deliberately allowing his enemies to follow him to an abandoned factory.

There, Amir captures Raghavan’s son inside an area surrounded by an electric fence.

He forces Raghavan to return the stolen gold in exchange for his son.

Surprisingly, Amir initially lets him leave.

But Raghavan’s son makes a fatal mistake.

While escaping, he begins shooting at Amir’s men.

Amir retaliates by electrifying his vehicle.

Everyone believes Raghavan’s son has been killed.

That moment changes Amir’s life forever.

He can no longer safely remain in India.

Why Does Amir Escape to London?

After apparently killing Raghavan’s son, Amir moves to London.

He gives up gold smuggling entirely.

Raghavan and Harish still want revenge.

Amir also knows that returning to India could result in his arrest for murder. Even worse, he believes his enemies could easily have him killed once he is imprisoned.

He therefore remains trapped in London for years.

Why Did Amir Really Get Jeethu Arrested?

One of the movie’s important twists reveals that Amir did not betray Jeethu out of selfishness.

After Amir abandoned smuggling, Jeethu eventually started doing it again because he needed money.

Amir repeatedly tried to stop him.

Jeethu refused.

Finally, Amir arranged for Jeethu to be taken into police custody because he believed prison was safer than allowing his friend to continue risking his life in the smuggling business.

Raghavan and Harish simply use the situation for their own purposes.

They turn Jeethu into a government witness and manipulate the misunderstanding between the two friends.

But Jeethu alone is not enough to bring Amir home.

So the villains target his family.

What Happens to Amir’s Father?

Raghavan and Harish send armed men to attack Amir’s house.

Amir had already installed heavy security because he knew his family could eventually become a target.

Unfortunately, the attackers break through.

Yusuf manages to protect Amir’s wife, mother and children, helping them escape.

But Yusuf himself is fatally injured.

He dies saving the family.

For Amir, this is the point of no return.

No matter what legal danger awaits him, he cannot remain in London after his father’s death.

He returns to India.

Police arrest him immediately at the airport and take him, still in handcuffs, to attend Yusuf’s funeral.

It is one of the most tragic moments in Khalifa.

Why Does Amir Refuse to Escape?

Seth Ji prepares a plan that could help Amir escape after the funeral.

Amir refuses.

He realizes that running again would leave his wife, children and mother permanently vulnerable.

His enemies would continue targeting them simply to reach him.

Instead, Amir completes his father’s funeral and willingly surrenders to the police.

He is sent to prison, where Jeethu is also being held.

Initially there is tension between them because both men believe the other betrayed their friendship.

Eventually they understand how Raghavan manipulated the situation.

Their misunderstanding ends and their friendship is restored.

Unfortunately, Raghavan and Harish are not finished.

Khalifa Ending Explained: Who Tries to Kill Amir in Prison?

One night, corrupt police officers secretly remove Amir from prison.

Outside, Raghavan, Harish Bashir and their men are waiting.

Their plan is to finally execute him.

Then comes another major revelation.

Raghavan’s son did not actually die in the electrocution incident.

He survived, although he was left badly injured.

Raghavan wants Amir to see the consequences of his actions.

But the villains go too far when they begin mocking Yusuf’s death.

That unleashes Amir’s full rage.

He fights the group almost single-handedly.

Eventually he reaches Harish Bashir, one of the men responsible for framing Yusuf and beginning the entire chain of events that destroyed Amir’s peaceful life.

Amir kills him.

Then he turns toward Raghavan.

Amir appears ready to kill him too, but Raghavan’s injured son stops him.

At the final moment, Amir chooses to spare Raghavan.

It suggests that despite everything he has done, Amir is still capable of stopping himself before revenge completely consumes him.

Does Amir Finally Get a Happy Ending?

After the confrontation, Amir receives bail.

He finally attempts to honor the life his father always wanted for him.

Amir returns to his wife and children and begins living peacefully.

For a moment, Khalifa appears to have reached a surprisingly hopeful conclusion.

Amir has escaped both his enemies and the gold-smuggling business.

But there is one final revelation.

And it completely changes the meaning of the ending.

Who Is Ahmed Ali?

Amir learns that a legendary international criminal imprisoned in Nepal is finally being released.

His name is Ahmed Ali.

Ahmed is Amir’s grandfather.

He is the same feared smuggler whose reputation followed Yusuf throughout his life and indirectly influenced the authorities’ willingness to believe Yusuf was involved in gold smuggling.

Despite being around 70 years old, Ahmed continues to command enormous respect inside the criminal world.

Amir travels to Nepal to meet him.

When Ahmed is released, his old associates are already waiting.

Amir approaches his grandfather and embraces him.

Ahmed has also heard about everything his grandson accomplished.

But then he tells Amir something disturbing.

According to Ahmed, Amir left some unfinished business behind.

And unfinished enemies can eventually return.

Ahmed has therefore handled the problem himself.

What Is Tovino Thomas’ Role in the Khalifa Ending?

The final surprise introduces a dangerous contract killer connected to Ahmed Ali.

He is sent to eliminate the people Amir chose not to kill.

Those people are Raghavan and his son.

The contract killer, played by Tovino Thomas, arrives and finishes the job.

After killing them, he simply reports that the mission has been completed.

Amir is stunned.

Throughout the movie, Amir has been presented as an extraordinarily powerful man who built a massive smuggling network, defeated dangerous enemies and survived repeated assassination attempts.

But in one moment, he realizes his grandfather is operating on an entirely different level.

Amir needed years to build his reputation.

Ahmed Ali already possesses a network capable of reaching enemies and eliminating them almost effortlessly.

What Does Khalifa’s Final Scene Mean?

The ending creates a deliberate contrast between Yusuf Ali and Ahmed Ali.

Yusuf spent his entire life rejecting his father’s criminal world.

He wanted respectability, legitimate business and a normal future for his family.

Ironically, the conspiracy against Yusuf pushed Amir toward Ahmed’s world anyway.

Amir eventually tries to break that cycle.

He leaves smuggling, returns to his family and even chooses not to kill Raghavan.

But Ahmed immediately finishes the revenge Amir left incomplete.

That means Amir may believe he has escaped his criminal legacy, while the reality is very different.

His grandfather has just returned.

And Ahmed clearly has plans.

The final line that there is still much more to come strongly suggests that the next chapter could explore the relationship between Amir and Ahmed.

Will Ahmed try to bring Amir back into the criminal world?

Will Amir accept his grandfather’s methods?

Or will he follow Yusuf’s final wish and try to stay away from crime?

Those questions form the foundation for a possible second part.

Final Thoughts

Khalifa ultimately presents Amir Ali as a man caught between two generations.

His father Yusuf represents the honest life Amir originally wanted.

But Ahmed Ali’s arrival proves that the story is far from over.

The most powerful figure in Khalifa may not be Amir at all.
