Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers about the story and ending of Kattalan.

Kattalan takes viewers into a brutal jungle world where fear, greed, power and survival are deeply connected. What initially looks like a conflict between tribal villagers and wild elephants gradually turns into a much darker story involving ivory smuggling, gangsters, corrupt officials and the exploitation of an entire community.

At the centre of the story is Anthony, a skilled man who initially works for the powerful Marianna. However, by the final act, Anthony becomes the man who challenges the system that has controlled his people for years.

So what exactly happens at the end of Kattalan? Why does Anthony turn against Marianna? And what does the surprising final appearance of Lokesh Kanagaraj actually mean?

The Beginning of Marianna’s Ivory Empire

The story begins in 1995 in a dense forest located around the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border.

The tribal community living there is constantly threatened by wild elephants. Their homes and crops are destroyed, and people are sometimes killed in elephant attacks.

Unable to protect themselves, the villagers approach Marianna, one of the most feared and influential men in the area.

At first, Marianna appears to be their saviour.

But everything changes when his men realise that elephant tusks can be sold for enormous amounts of money in the international market.

Marianna quickly turns the situation into a criminal business.

Elephants are hunted, their tusks are removed and the ivory is secretly transported outside the region. Meanwhile, the tribal villagers are forced to work for Marianna while receiving almost nothing in return.

Marianna becomes richer and more powerful, while the people of the jungle remain trapped.

Eddie and the Corrupt Police Officer Enter the Game

Marianna eventually faces a new problem when a police officer begins intercepting his ivory shipments.

Initially, it appears that the officer is genuinely fighting the smuggling operation.

However, another twist reveals that the officer is actually connected to Eddie, a rival gangster who also wants control over the ivory business.

The jungle is now divided between two powerful criminal groups.

Marianna has influence over the tribal workers, while Eddie has political support and connections within the police.

Caught between them are the villagers, who continue paying the biggest price.

Who Is Anthony in Kattalan?

Anthony is introduced as an intelligent, calm and extremely capable man.

Marianna trusts him because Anthony can complete dangerous assignments that others cannot.

One of Anthony’s biggest missions involves intercepting a major ivory shipment that Eddie's men are attempting to transport toward Rameswaram.

Anthony successfully steals the shipment.

Later, he becomes even more valuable to Marianna by finding creative ways to bypass police checkpoints.

One of the most memorable plans involves ambulances carrying bodies after a deadly bus incident.

The police believe the ivory has been hidden inside the bodies and focus entirely on searching them.

But Anthony has anticipated their thinking.

The tusks are hidden elsewhere, allowing the shipment to escape while the police waste their time searching the wrong place.

Anthony proves that he is more than a fighter. He is a strategist.

But despite working for Marianna, Anthony himself belongs to the tribal community.

That connection eventually changes everything.

Ali’s Daughter Changes Anthony Forever

Anthony is particularly close to Ali, another man from the tribal community who has spent years working in the ivory network.

Ali has a daughter with serious physical disabilities, and much of what he earns is intended for her treatment.

After an attack connected to Eddie's rivalry, Ali's daughter is badly injured.

Doctors tell the family that she needs an urgent operation costing around ₹18 lakh.

Ali and Anthony go to Marianna for help.

They believe that after risking their lives for him for so many years, Marianna will surely help save the child.

Instead, Marianna offers an insulting amount of money and shows almost no concern for her life.

For Anthony, this becomes the breaking point.

He confronts Marianna and reminds him that the tribal people have killed elephants, transported ivory and risked their lives to make him rich.

Yet when one of their children needs help, Marianna treats them like they are worthless.

The confrontation ends with Anthony being pushed out of Marianna’s organisation.

Why Does Anthony Start His Own Ivory Operation?

Anthony now decides that instead of risking their lives for Marianna, he and his people will make money for themselves.

Anthony, Ali and a few trusted men hunt an elephant and take its tusks.

He then travels to Sri Lanka, where he meets a major international dealer.

During this journey, Anthony also meets Lasi, a brave woman connected to the dealer's network who helps him complete the deal.

The dealer confirms that Anthony has brought genuine ivory and pays him a huge amount.

For the first time, Anthony believes he may have found a way to change the lives of his people.

But when he returns home, everything changes.

What Happens to Ali’s Daughter?

Anthony arrives back at the village only to discover that Marianna has unleashed violence on the tribal community.

The villagers have been beaten and terrorised.

Worst of all, Ali's daughter has been killed.

This is the moment Anthony's personal rebellion becomes an all-out war.

He no longer wants money or independence from Marianna.

He wants revenge.

Anthony gathers the villagers together, and the women of the community are among the first to stand beside him because they have suffered years of abuse and humiliation.

The people who were once frightened and divided are finally united.

Anthony vs Eddie and Marianna

The climax turns the jungle into a battlefield.

Marianna wants Anthony dead for betraying him.

Eddie also wants revenge because Anthony has killed his brother.

Interestingly, two rival criminals who were previously fighting each other now share the same enemy: Anthony.

But Anthony is no longer fighting alone.

The entire tribal community stands against them.

A violent battle follows.

Anthony eventually defeats Eddie, ending his personal revenge mission.

He then reaches Marianna.

Marianna attempts to survive, but Anthony refuses to let the man who controlled and exploited the jungle for decades escape.

Anthony kills Marianna as well.

With both Eddie and Marianna gone, the tribal villagers finally believe that they are free.

Kattalan Ending Explained

At first, Kattalan appears to end like a traditional rebellion story.

The oppressors are dead.

The villagers are free.

Anthony becomes their leader.

But then comes the movie's darkest twist.

The ivory business does not stop.

Instead of ending elephant hunting, the tribal community itself begins controlling the operation.

The same ivory is now sent directly to the powerful dealer in Sri Lanka.

In other words, Marianna may be gone, but the system he created survives.

The people who were once exploited by the business have now become participants in it.

The king of the jungle has changed.

The game has not.

Lokesh Kanagaraj Cameo Explained

The final reveal makes the ending even more surprising.

The mysterious international dealer in Sri Lanka is revealed to be Lokesh Kanagaraj.

His presence suggests that the network is much bigger than Marianna, Eddie or Anthony.

Marianna was only one part of a massive international ivory operation.

Even after his death, the business can continue because there are powerful figures above him who remain untouched.

This also gives the ending a possible setup for a continuation.

Anthony has defeated the men who controlled his village, but by continuing the ivory trade, he may eventually become part of the same system he fought against.

What Does the Ending Really Mean?

The ending of Kattalan is intentionally ironic.

Anthony wins his freedom but does not completely escape the cycle of greed and violence.

Marianna's biggest crime was not simply that he became rich.

It was that he exploited vulnerable people and transformed the jungle into a business built on death.

By the end, Anthony removes Marianna but allows the profitable system to survive.

That makes the final moments much darker than a simple victory.

The oppressed have defeated their oppressor—but they may slowly be becoming the next version of him.

And that is what makes the ending of Kattalan so interesting.

The ruler changed.

The jungle remained the same.
