Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers, including the complete story and ending of Kartavya.
Some battles are not fought only with guns. They are fought against corruption, social pressure, blind faith, betrayal and even one’s own family. Kartavya builds its story around this difficult idea through an honest police officer named Pawan.
Pawan believes that wearing a uniform is more than a job. For him, duty comes before fear. But when a journalist is murdered under police protection and his own family becomes trapped in a dangerous honor dispute, Pawan is forced to decide how far he is willing to go for what he believes is right.
Here is the Kartavya movie story and ending explained.
Reema Dutta’s Murder Changes Everything
The story begins in the fictional Haryana town of Jhamli.
Pawan is celebrating his birthday with fellow police officers, including his close friend Ashok. The officers are also waiting at the railway station to receive national journalist Reema Dutta, who has been given police protection.
Soon after Reema leaves the station, two armed attackers on motorcycles open fire on her vehicle.
Reema is killed, one police officer dies and Ashok is injured. Pawan manages to shoot one of the attackers, but the second escapes.
The murder becomes national news because a journalist has been killed despite being surrounded by police security.
Pawan’s senior officer Keshav blames him for the failure and warns that suspension may follow. Pawan promises that he will discover who ordered the attack.
Pawan Faces Another Crisis at Home
While Pawan investigates Reema’s murder, his family is dealing with another dangerous problem.
His younger brother Deepak has eloped with Preeti, a woman from another caste.
Preeti’s family and members of the local community consider the relationship an attack on their social honor.
Pawan’s father Harihar is also obsessed with reputation. Instead of protecting his son, he says that if Deepak has broken the community’s rules, he should receive the same punishment others have received before him.
Pawan, however, refuses to accept that logic.
With the help of his wife Varsha, he learns where Deepak and Preeti are hiding. He warns the couple that remaining in the area could put their lives in danger.
Who Was Reema Dutta Investigating?
The murder investigation eventually leads Pawan toward one of Jhamli’s most powerful figures: Anand Shri.
To the public, Anand Shri is a respected spiritual leader. Thousands of followers visit his ashram, and politicians and wealthy people are shown treating him with enormous respect.
But behind this public image lies a horrifying secret.
According to the story, children living around his organization are abused, intimidated and controlled.
Reema Dutta had apparently come to Jhamli to investigate and expose Anand Shri.
Suddenly, her murder begins to make much more sense.
Haripal Reveals the Truth
The police eventually identify Haripal, a 16-year-old boy, as one of the people connected to Reema’s killing.
When Pawan finally gets access to Haripal, the boy reveals what was happening behind the walls of Anand Shri’s organization.
Haripal says he was abused, beaten and manipulated.
Most importantly, he is prepared to testify against Anand Shri.
Pawan realizes that Haripal is not simply a criminal mastermind. He is also a vulnerable teenager who has been exploited by much more powerful people.
Pawan decides to protect him.
But Keshav appears to be working under pressure from Anand Shri and attempts to take control of Haripal.
Pawan makes a risky arrangement: Haripal will be moved out of the state, while his confession will temporarily remain out of court.
Pawan believes he has saved the boy.
He is wrong.
Ashok’s Shocking Betrayal
Pawan asks his trusted friend Ashok to safely escort Haripal away.
Later, Haripal suddenly stops answering Pawan’s calls.
Pawan becomes suspicious.
Eventually, Anand Shri’s associate Nirmal reveals the devastating truth: Haripal has been killed.
Even worse, the people who found him knew his location because Ashok had betrayed Pawan.
This completely changes Pawan.
The man he trusted as a friend and fellow police officer had secretly helped the people Pawan was fighting against.
Pawan confronts Nirmal and later turns on Ashok.
But Ashok reveals one more secret before his death.
What Happened to Deepak and Preeti?
Ashok knew where Deepak and Preeti were hiding.
Because Preeti belonged to Ashok’s caste community, Ashok gave their location to the people searching for them.
The information eventually reached Harihar and the local group determined to punish the couple.
The result is devastating.
Harihar participates in the killing of his own son Deepak and Preeti in the name of family honor.
For Pawan, this becomes the final breaking point.
His investigation has now exposed corruption everywhere around him.
A spiritual leader is protected by powerful people.
A senior police officer bends to political and religious influence.
His closest friend betrays him.
And his own father chooses social reputation over his son’s life.
Kartavya Ending Explained
In the final part of Kartavya, Pawan stops believing that the existing system will automatically deliver justice.
After dealing with Nirmal and Ashok, Pawan confronts Keshav.
He openly tells Keshav that he knows how deeply compromised the system has become and warns him that he must change the way he performs his duty.
But Pawan still has one final personal confrontation left.
He returns home and takes his father Harihar to an isolated location.
Pawan reminds him that he had already warned him: if anything happened to Deepak, he would not ignore it simply because Harihar was his father.
Harihar chose reputation and traditional ideas of honor over his own child.
Pawan now says that if Harihar could sacrifice everything for so-called honor, he can also sacrifice everything for what he considers his kartavya — his duty.
Pawan kills Harihar and burns his body to remove the evidence.
That is the movie’s darkest and most controversial moment.
What Does the Ending of Kartavya Mean?
The title Kartavya, meaning duty, becomes the central message of the ending.
Throughout the movie, different characters justify their actions using different beliefs.
Harihar chooses social honor.
Anand Shri hides corruption behind religion and influence.
Keshav chooses self-preservation.
Ashok chooses loyalty to caste and powerful people instead of loyalty to his friend and profession.
Pawan tries to choose duty.
But the ending deliberately makes that choice uncomfortable.
By taking justice into his own hands, Pawan crosses the same legal boundary he once represented as a police officer.
This creates the movie’s biggest moral question:
Can a man still claim to be serving justice when he abandons the law to achieve it?
The film does not provide a simple answer.
What Happens to Anand Shri?
One major question remains unresolved at the end.
The story does not clearly show Anand Shri being arrested or punished.
The fate of several people involved in the larger conspiracy also remains uncertain.
That unfinished thread makes the ending frustrating but meaningful. Pawan can punish individuals close to him, but destroying an entire corrupt system is much more difficult.
Final Thoughts
Kartavya is ultimately a story about the conflict between law, religion, social honor, family and personal responsibility.
Pawan begins as an officer who believes the system can be used to find the truth. By the ending, repeated betrayals have pushed him toward becoming judge and executioner himself.
Whether viewers consider his final actions justice or revenge will probably determine how they interpret the movie.
But one message remains clear: the film wants viewers to question what duty really means when every institution and relationship around a person has failed.
