Karakkam Movie Ending Explained: Who Killed the Five Ghosts and Why Did They Haunt Dhanush?
The complete story and climax of Karakkam explained, including the mystery behind the five stolen crosses, Chacko’s shocking confession, and the final supernatural twist.

Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Karakkam (2026), including its story, villain reveal and ending.
What Is Karakkam About?
Karakkam is a 2026 Malayalam musical horror-comedy directed by Subhash Lalitha Subrahmanian. The film stars Sreenath Bhasi alongside Femina George, Praveen T. J., Shaun Romy, Sidharth Bharathan and others. It was released theatrically on May 28, 2026, before arriving on Sony LIV.
The movie combines supernatural horror with comedy, friendship and music. Its central mystery begins when Dhanush and Khaja drunkenly remove five crosses from a cemetery—an apparently foolish prank that connects them to five restless spirits.
But why are those ghosts still trapped in the human world, and what do they really want from Dhanush and Khaja?
Here is the complete story and ending of Karakkam explained.
Dhanush and Khaja Steal Five Crosses
Dhanush is a struggling professional dancer who has little money and no clear direction in life. On New Year's Eve, he joins a party at a lodge and eventually finds himself escaping trouble in a van with Khaja, a young sketch artist he barely knows.
The two hide near a cemetery while trying to escape the men chasing them.
After drinking heavily, they notice five unusual metal crosses placed on five graves. Without understanding their significance, Dhanush and Khaja remove the crosses and take them back with them.
That single decision creates the entire supernatural problem.
Soon, five mysterious people begin appearing around them.
Who Are the Five Ghosts?
At first, Dhanush and Khaja assume that alcohol is causing them to hallucinate. However, the strange figures continue appearing even after they are completely sober.
The situation becomes even more disturbing when they discover that other people cannot see the mysterious visitors.
The five spirits do not behave like conventional horror-movie ghosts. They dance, demand music and repeatedly follow Dhanush and Khaja.
Eventually, the two realise that the ghosts are connected to the five crosses they removed from the cemetery.
They try selling the crosses and even hand them over to Robin, hoping that getting rid of the objects will solve their problem. Instead, the supernatural activity simply follows whoever possesses them.
Why Can't the Ghosts Rest in Peace?
Desperate for help, Dhanush, Khaja and Robin finally visit a church.
They learn that restoring the crosses alone may not be enough. The families connected to the dead must become involved so the spirits can finally find peace.
This sends the group on a new mission: discover who the five dead people were and locate the people connected to them.
Their investigation eventually takes them to Salem.
They discover that the five spirits had once been close friends connected by music and dancing. Years earlier, jealousy and conflict had complicated their lives before all five apparently died in a tragic road accident.
But the accident was not the complete truth.
The Truth About Chacko
The investigation eventually leads Dhanush and his friends toward Chacko, a powerful and dangerous man.
Jenny, who knew the five victims, helps reveal more about their past. The five friends had performed together, but their activities created conflict with people who opposed what they were doing.
For decades, their deaths had appeared to be the result of a car accident.
Then comes the movie's biggest revelation.
Chacko admits that their deaths were not accidental.
He reveals that he attacked the group while they were travelling by car and caused their vehicle to fall into the valley.
In other words, the five spirits had remained restless because they had been murdered and justice had never been served.
Karakkam Ending Explained: What Happens to Chacko?
After confessing what he did to the five friends, Chacko decides that Dhanush and the others must also die.
A fight begins.
Chacko initially proves too powerful for the group. But when Dhanush fears that his friends may suffer the same fate as the five murdered victims, something changes.
He suddenly finds the strength to fight back.
The confrontation continues until a police vehicle arrives. During the chaos, the vehicle accidentally hits Chacko, sending him over the edge of the valley.
Chacko dies at virtually the same location connected to the deaths of his victims.
His death becomes the final act of justice the five restless souls had been waiting for.
Why Do the Five Ghosts Finally Disappear?
Once Chacko is gone, the reason behind the haunting becomes clearer.
The ghosts were never simply evil spirits trying to terrorize Dhanush and Khaja.
They were victims.
Their lives had been violently taken from them, the truth surrounding their deaths remained hidden, and their graves were later disturbed when Dhanush and Khaja removed the crosses.
By uncovering their past and exposing their killer, Dhanush and his friends unintentionally help complete the unfinished story of the five souls.
The families are then brought to the cemetery so the crosses can be restored to the graves.
Most of the spirits can finally move on.
What Does the Final Scene Mean?
Just when Dhanush and Khaja believe their supernatural adventure is finished, the film delivers one final twist.
Four of the spirits appear to have found closure, but one connection remains unresolved. The group must continue searching for the family connected to the remaining spirit, leading them toward Rameswaram.
The closing moments suggest that the spirit is still travelling with them.
Therefore, the ending is both funny and supernatural: Dhanush and his friends have solved the main mystery, but their journey with the dead may not be completely over.
It also leaves enough room for another adventure if the filmmakers ever decide to continue the story.
Why Were the Crosses So Important?
The five crosses are essentially the objects connecting the living characters to the dead.
Removing them disturbs the graves and brings Dhanush and Khaja directly into the unresolved lives of the five spirits.
This is why simply throwing the crosses away or giving them to somebody else cannot fix the problem.
The real solution is not escaping the ghosts.
It is discovering why the ghosts cannot leave.
That turns Karakkam from a simple haunted-cemetery comedy into a story about unfinished business, friendship and justice.
Final Thoughts
Karakkam uses a simple horror setup—a pair of drunken young men disturbing graves—but expands it into a supernatural road adventure filled with music, comedy and a murder mystery.
The five ghosts initially seem to be the threat, but the climax changes that perception completely.
The real villain is the man responsible for their deaths.
Once Chacko's secret is exposed and justice finally reaches him, the spirits are able to begin finding peace.
And with one supernatural thread apparently still unresolved in the closing moments, Karakkam makes sure its strange journey does not end too neatly.
