Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Kara, including its complete story and ending.

Kara is not simply a movie about a thief robbing banks. Beneath its action, humour and carefully planned heists lies an emotional story about family, inherited land, farmer debt and a financial system designed to exploit people who barely understand its rules.

Directed by Vignesh Raja, the 2026 Tamil film stars Dhanush as Karasaami, better known as Kara. The supporting cast includes Mamitha Baiju as Selli, Jayaram as the corrupt bank official Muthu Selvan and Suraj Venjaramoodu as DSP Bharathan. The story takes place during the economic uncertainty of the early 1990s.

Kara’s Final Robbery Goes Wrong

The movie begins on a stormy night when Kara and an inexperienced thief named Murugesan target an apparently empty house.

Disguised as electricity-board workers, they use clever techniques to hide their fingerprints, confuse guard dogs and break the lock. They successfully collect cash and jewellery, but the homeowners suddenly return.

Murugesan escapes through a ventilator and abandons Kara inside. Kara fights his way out, only to discover that the house belongs to an influential politician and the entire village is waiting outside.

Kara is arrested and taken to a police station, where he attracts the attention of DSP Bharathan. Bharathan is close to retirement and desperately wants one famous case that will finally bring him public recognition.

He exaggerates the value of the stolen gold and prepares a dramatic press conference. However, Kara attacks him, cuts the electricity and escapes from the station.

Kara Tries to Live Honestly

Six months later, Kara has married his girlfriend Selli and moved to Renigunta. He has promised her that he will never steal again.

The couple works at a hotel, but their wages are low and their living conditions are miserable. They dream of opening a small eatery where Selli can cook and Kara can serve customers.

Unfortunately, the bank refuses to give them a business loan without collateral. Kara remembers that his family owns eight acres of farmland in his native village. He returns home after sixteen years, hoping to obtain the property documents.

Kara had run away as a teenager after stealing money from his father. He expects anger when he returns, but his father, Kandhasaami, welcomes him with tears, affection and complete forgiveness.

This unexpected love makes it difficult for Kara to reveal the real reason behind his return.

The Family Land Is Already in Danger

Kara soon discovers that his father has already mortgaged the land to purchase a tractor. Rising fuel prices, poor harvests and mounting interest have made it impossible to repay the loan.

The bank is now preparing to seize their ancestral property.

Kara suggests selling the land, clearing the debt and using some of the remaining money to start his business. His father is devastated by the suggestion. The land contains the graves of their ancestors, and Kandhasaami wants to be buried there after his death.

The argument ends bitterly. Before Kara can properly apologise, his father dies.

The tragedy becomes even more painful when bank representatives refuse to allow Kandhasaami to be buried on the family property. According to them, the defaulted land now belongs to the bank.

Kara is forced to place his father’s body in a government mortuary. He is given only a few days to clear the loan and recover the land before the body is cremated as unclaimed.

Kara Decides to Rob the Bank

Kara now makes a desperate decision. Because the bank trapped his father with confusing terms and excessive interest, he will steal money from the same bank and use it to repay the loan.

With the help of Murugesan and his uncle, Kara studies different branches, security systems and police response times.

Their first attempt fails because Kara cannot open the vault. Learning from the mistake, they plan a daytime robbery while nearby residents are distracted by an important television broadcast.

The second attempt succeeds. Kara takes only the amount he believes is necessary to clear his father’s debt.

He even exchanges the stolen banknotes for older currency before making the payment, preventing police from tracing the serial numbers.

However, Kara receives another shock at the bank. Despite repaying the original amount, he is told that additional compound interest, penalties and hidden charges remain unpaid.

The Corrupt Manager’s Secret

Regional bank manager Muthu Selvan realises that Kara committed the robbery. Instead of reporting him, Selvan offers him a partnership.

Selvan has deliberately encouraged uneducated farmers to accept loans without properly explaining the terms. His plan is to use Kara to rob selected branches and divide the money.

Kara refuses because he returned to crime only to save his father’s land.

Selvan then hires other criminals to rob banks using Kara’s methods, hoping the police will blame Kara for every crime. DSP Bharathan gradually notices that something is wrong, but he still believes Kara is at the centre of the robberies.

From Personal Revenge to a Farmers’ Rebellion

Kara initially wants only enough money to save his family’s property. His motivation changes when he meets other farmers whose land, tractors and livelihoods have also been taken by the bank.

He finally understands that his father was not an isolated victim. The entire region has been trapped in the same cycle of misleading paperwork, compound interest and property seizure.

Kara begins robbing multiple bank branches, but he does not keep the money. Instead, he distributes it among indebted villagers so they can repay their loans and recover their land documents.

The thief gradually becomes a local Robin Hood—a criminal in the eyes of the law but a hero to people who have lost everything.

What Happens to Muthu Selvan?

DSP Bharathan predicts that the next robbery will take place at the Mudukulathur branch.

Coincidentally, Selvan has sent his own criminals to rob the same bank. When they arrive, Bharathan’s officers confront them. After two criminals are shot, the surviving robber confesses that Selvan organised the crime.

Selvan tries to escape but is struck by a tractor.

The moment is deeply ironic. Selvan destroyed farmers’ lives by trapping them in tractor loans, and a tractor ultimately brings about his downfall.

Later, while Selvan is receiving treatment in hospital, Bharathan switches off his oxygen supply and kills him. The officer then prepares to arrest Kara.

Kara Ending Explained

Before Bharathan can reach Kara, he discovers hundreds of villagers standing outside the bank with money to clear their debts.

He immediately understands what Kara has done. Kara robbed the branches and gave the money to struggling farmers, allowing them to reclaim their ancestral land.

Meanwhile, Kara finally retrieves his father’s body and buries him beside the family’s ancestors, fulfilling Kandhasaami’s final wish.

Bharathan confronts Kara after the funeral. He argues that regardless of his intentions, Kara has broken the law.

Kara asks Bharathan what would happen if he stopped receiving his salary for several years. Could he continue paying his own loan instalments?

Kara explains that the farmers faced exactly that situation. Their crops failed, income disappeared and bank officials pushed them into agreements they did not understand. In Kara’s eyes, he did not steal from innocent people—he returned what the system had unfairly taken from them.

Bharathan initially handcuffs him but then realises that arresting Kara would turn him into a public hero while making the police look like defenders of a corrupt bank.

Instead, Bharathan blames the robberies on Muthu Selvan and releases Kara. This allows Bharathan to claim credit for solving the case while protecting his own reputation.

He warns Kara never to commit another crime.

Kara replies that he is not running away again. He will remain in his village, work on the recovered land and become a farmer.

The final image shows Kara driving his father’s tractor across the field. The machine that once represented debt and humiliation now represents freedom, responsibility and a new beginning.

Final Thoughts

Kara asks an uncomfortable question: Can an illegal act become morally understandable when the legal system itself protects exploitation?

Kara is certainly not innocent. He robs banks, threatens people and repeatedly breaks the law. Yet his crimes expose a larger injustice—poor and uneducated farmers being buried beneath financial conditions they were never equipped to understand.

The film does not claim that stealing is the correct solution. Instead, it demonstrates how desperation can push an ordinary person beyond the limits of legality.

At its heart, Kara is a story of redemption. A son who once stole from his father eventually risks everything to protect his father’s honour, recover his land and save an entire community.

Kara begins the film as a thief trying to escape his past. He ends it as a man who finally understands where he belongs.
