Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Kapala, including the ending and the truth behind the supernatural curse.

Kapala Ending Explained: What Really Happened?

The story begins when Sanjay receives an old camera that was discovered during an investigation. He is asked to develop the photographs urgently. While working in his darkroom, Sanjay notices something strange in one of the photographs.

The picture shows four people standing near a tree, but there is also a mysterious figure behind them.

At first, Sanjay assumes that it is simply a problem with the old camera. But things quickly become terrifying.

While developing the photographs, Sanjay hears someone taking a shower in the bathroom. He assumes that his roommate Mally has returned home. However, when Sanjay receives a phone call from Mally, he realizes that Mally is not even at home.

So who is inside the bathroom?

When Sanjay investigates, the bathroom is completely empty. The strangest part is that a mug appears to move through the air by itself. Sanjay tries to escape, but the main door suddenly locks.

Soon afterward, Sanjay begins behaving strangely. When his brother Prashanth arrives, Sanjay attacks him and starts showing signs of possession.

The Spirit Takes Control of Sanjay

Prashanth realizes that something supernatural may be happening. He contacts a spiritual guru, who performs a ritual to enter the room through astral travel.

Inside, the guru discovers that Sanjay's body has been taken over by a powerful spirit. More frighteningly, Sanjay's own soul is still connected to his body.

The guru explains that they have only a limited amount of time to identify the spirit and remove it. Otherwise, Sanjay's soul may never return to his body.

Then something unexpected happens.

A fire starts in the darkroom, apparently targeting the photographs. Most of the photographs survive, and the guru realizes that one particular photograph may be connected to the entire supernatural incident.

The Mystery of the Old Camera

Prashanth contacts forest officer Ramakant, who reveals where the camera came from.

During excavation work in the Karadi forest, workers discovered two skeletons along with an old camera. The camera was handed over for investigation, which is how it eventually reached Sanjay.

Prashanth and his companions begin investigating the people connected to the photograph.

One of the people in the photograph is identified as Ganesh's wife-to-be, Keerthi. Her family had previously called off their engagement after hearing disturbing stories about Ganesh's village.

The village was considered cursed, and outsiders were expected to follow strange rules before entering.

Prashanth eventually learns that the photograph is connected to an ancient story involving a woman named Nipunja.

The Curse of Nipunja

According to the story, Nipunja was a beautiful young woman who became connected to the powerful man Pankaja and his family.

After her marriage, her husband suddenly died.

It is eventually revealed that Nipunja had been in love with another man, a tantric named Ghora. She had secretly poisoned her husband using poison supplied by her lover.

Pankaja eventually discovered the truth.

Enraged by the death of his son, he decided that Nipunja and her lover would receive a punishment worse than death. He wanted to make sure that even after dying, they would never be able to reunite.

Ghora was captured and tortured before being killed in a horrific ritual. His head was separated from his body, and his skull was placed near a banyan tree.

Nipunja was also imprisoned and tortured. Before dying, she cursed the village and declared that if she and her lover ever became one again, the village would become a cremation ground.

Her skeleton remained at the site.

Why Was the Village So Strange?

The strange rules surrounding the village were created because of this curse.

Visitors were required to strike a particular spot near the banyan tree three times with a slipper before entering the village.

Another important rule was that blood must never fall onto the village ground.

Most importantly, objects connected to the supernatural site were not supposed to leave the village.

These rules existed because breaking them could allow the curse to spread.

Unfortunately, several of these rules are broken.

When Mohan's nose begins bleeding, his blood falls onto the ground. Later, the old camera carrying the image of the spirit is taken outside the village.

That is when the supernatural events begin spreading beyond the original location.

What Happened to Mohan and His Friends?

Years earlier, Ganesh had taken his friends Mohan, Bhuji and Deepu to the village.

They took photographs near the same banyan tree.

While developing the old photographs, they unknowingly captured the supernatural entity.

Mohan later begins experiencing strange symptoms. He hears voices, sees frightening figures and behaves as though something is controlling him.

After blood falls onto the ground, the entity possesses him.

An exorcist named Edai attempts to control Mohan through rituals. She eventually discovers a mysterious doll buried in the ground and performs another ritual.

But the problem does not end there.

Bhuji later hears someone calling him outside. He follows Mohan and is eventually found dead near a pond, with the mysterious doll nearby.

The remaining friends try to escape the village, but the supernatural force continues following them.

Their vehicle crashes, and the events eventually lead to the discovery of the skeletons and the old camera.

Why Did Mally Become Possessed?

Mally also becomes connected to the curse.

While travelling through the village, he steps on a nail and cuts his foot. His blood falls onto the ground, breaking another important rule.

However, the protective talisman given by the guru temporarily protects him.

When the talisman falls off, the spirit takes control of Mally.

This reveals an important pattern in the story: the village's rules are not simply traditions. They are safeguards designed to prevent the supernatural curse from spreading.

The Real Identity of the Spirit

Near the climax, the guru tries to perform a ritual to destroy the supernatural force.

At first, he believes that the spirit's lover is named Ghora.

But the ritual does not work.

This means Ghora is not the entity's true name.

Eventually, Edai reveals the truth.

The name of the spirit is Kapala.

The revelation is crucial because the guru needs the entity's real identity to complete the ritual.

Meanwhile, Kapala is trying to reach Nipunja's remains. His ultimate goal is to reunite with her.

Kapala's Final Plan

By this point, Kapala has become extremely powerful.

He breaks the container holding his skull, releasing several trapped spirits. Because Ghora was a tantric, numerous spirits had been trapped with him, allowing Kapala to increase his supernatural power.

The guru is badly injured but continues with the ritual.

At the same time, Prashanth learns that Nipunja's remains must be destroyed.

Edai finally reveals the truth about the village's history and explains that the two spirits must never be allowed to reunite.

She tells Prashanth that Nipunja's remains must be burned.

Kapala Ending Explained

In the final sequence, Prashanth takes a lantern and goes toward Nipunja's remains.

Kapala arrives to stop him.

At the same time, the guru performs the ritual using the name Kapala and targets the entity's skull.

Kapala attacks the people around him, trying to prevent them from destroying Nipunja's remains.

But Prashanth manages to spread the lantern's oil and sets the remains on fire.

At the same moment, the guru completes his ritual and sets Kapala's skull on fire.

With both sides of the curse finally destroyed, the connection between the two spirits is broken.

Kapala and Nipunja finally receive their release, and the ancient curse comes to an end.

The story concludes with the supernatural threat finally defeated.

What Does the Ending Mean?

The ending of Kapala connects everything back to the old village rules.

The camera, the banyan tree, the blood, the mysterious doll, the protective talisman and the skull were all pieces of the same supernatural history.

The biggest mistake made by the characters was unknowingly breaking the rules that had kept the curse contained for generations.

The old photograph became the key that allowed the mystery to be discovered, while the destruction of Nipunja's remains and Kapala's skull ultimately ended the curse.

In the end, the story is not simply about a haunted camera. The camera is what exposes an ancient tragedy that had remained hidden inside the village for generations.

And that is the real explanation behind the ending of Kapala.
