Kalan woke to a large and empty space around her. Unsure of where she was, she looked outside the window. It was a busy and strange place, so many people darted about and pushed past one another. Next to her stood a tall building, it blocked part of her view of the skyline, but she guessed that it was early morning.

Looking behind her, Kalan realised that she was in an empty theatre. The floor was dusty and there was a circle of clean floor from where she woke. Heading towards the stage Kalan looked for any one, or anything that she recognised. Blessed, Kalan found a piano. She brought it out to the window and began to play. Her fingers hurt and ached, but the longer she played, the more invigorated she felt.

In the reflective surface of the piano she glanced at herself. Long, straight white hair with grey eyes. Looking out of the window again she spotted someone in the window of the tall building, she looked at them with a blank face, almost as if she was confused by their presence. But she did not stop playing the piano. Her face twitched into a frown as the person left. Kalan was alone again.

Once she had completed her song she heard doors opening. Kalan snapped her gaze to the direction the sound came from and waited till they opened the doors to the theatre. There stood one man in a suit looking extremely confused.

"Ma'am this area is off limits. How did you get in?" he asked coming towards her. Kalan tensed at the speed he was approaching her and in reply, she only pointed to the perfectly clean circle in the middle of the auditorium. "Ma'am, I asked you a question, please answer it," he asked again. As he got closer, Kalan saw that he was a young man. Kalan tried to find her voice but for some reason, she couldn't form the words.

"Alright, suit yourself. But please come with me. I'll have to escort you out of the building. It isn't safe," he said when he was convinced that she wasn't going to reply. He went to touch her but she leapt off the piano chair and away from him in fright. He jumped at her sudden movements and apologised. "It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you," he reconsidered his movements and held out his hand. Kalan looked at it with curiosity and slowly placed her hand in his.

"Come on Matsuda! What's taking so long?" came another voice from outside the auditorium. Kalan recoiled her hand and stepped back, worried. What was this man going to do?

"Hey, don't worry. That's my friend, we're here to help you," the man called Matsuda said in a calm voice. He took a closer step towards her and reconsidering, she placed her hand in his and together they left the auditorium. Kalan kept glancing back at the piano as they were leaving and she audibly sighed.

Outside in the auditorium Kalan was greeted with two other men, she stopped at the door and looked to Matsuda with a scared expression. "The big guy is Mogi and this is Ukita," he introduced them with a grin on his face.

"Matsuda!! What did Ryusaki say?" came the disgruntled scowl from Ukita.

"Oh! I'm sorry Ukita, but look at her. I don't think she's Kira," he says closing the auditorium doors behind them.

"This is Ukita. Matsuda gave our real names to a non verbal female."

"White hair, grey eyes?" came a voice.

"Yes."

"Bring her in. She needs questioning now."

Kalan could understand them perfectly and she backed up against the door and tried to open them again.

"Come on lady, you're coming with us," Ukita said in a professional tone.

Kalan panicked and audibly cried out, shaking the doors as Ukita approached her.

"Ukita! Stop it," Matsuda called. But Mogi came between them before an argument could start.

"Come on Miss. We need you to come with us, please," Matsuda asked, turning to face her. She shook her head and glared at Ukita. "Please."

Kalan turned to face Matsuda and flung towards him. She held his jacket as they walked away from the theatre and across the road to the tall building.

---

Kalan entered the building and watched as the men did their routine. She stood there till Matsuda came back and they took her to an elevator. She felt a jolt and they headed upwards. Once they got to the right level she was taken to a wide open area where a kindly old man was stood holding an open laptop. Kalan approached and smiled at the man who smiled back, putting her a little at ease.

Then there came that same voice again. "Who are you? State you name and your connection to Kira." Kalan looked around to where the voice came from and with a little help from the elderly gentleman she looked at the laptop. It showed an image of the letter L. "Let me ask again. Who-"

Kalan cried out and backed away like she has just seen a monster. The four men present were baffled at her reaction.

"It's like she's never seen a laptop before?" whispered Matsuda.

"Watari. Ask her the questions. She may answer if it came from someone present," was the only reply.

Watari, the elderly man approached the horrified woman and bowed politely. "I'm sorry if we frightened you. Do you have a name?" he asked. His voice fitted his form, kind, gentle, relaxing.

Kalan nodded and tried to speak but she stuttered so much so couldn't even utter one syllable. She stamped her foot in frustration and looked to the elderly gentleman. "It seems like the young lady can't speak Sir," he voice louder for all to hear.

"Can't or won't," Ukita frowned.

Watari looked at Kalan who's eyes teared up as she was trying to speak.

"It seems like she is trying to speak. Either the lady has lost the ability due to drugs or she is simply incapable of talking," Watari confirmed.

"We incarcerate her, see if she is drugged up to stop her ability to speak," came the voice from the laptop.

"Naaa Baaa Mmmmtttfffaaa. Kaaaa-laaaa," Kalan wailed in her last attempt to say something. She screamed as it didn't work and buried her face in her hands as Watari guided her back to the others. Mogi guided her back into the elevator and Kalan was eventually guided into a grey room with a bed, a toilet and a sink. The door closed behind her and Kalan was left alone.

She paced the length of the room and sat on the bed. Confused, scared and horrified that she couldn't explain herself. For hours she sat on her bed bumbling and fumbling her way into trying and failing to talk.

"Kaaayyy-Laaaannnn." she managed to utter after six hours of waiting.

"Is that your name? Kaylan?" came the same voice after a few times of her saying it.

"K. A. L. A. N," she spelt out each letter phonically.

"Your name is Kalan?"

Kalan nodded.
