Judy Sheindlin might be slipping out of her robes for now, but that doesn't mean she's leaving behind a much-loved fanbase or legal career.

Yes, Judge Judy, the show that became North America's number one courtroom program in the United States when it bowed in 1996, will close its courtroom doors a final time at the end of the 2020-2021 television season. That doesn't mean, however, that #JudgeJudy herself is ready to retire, she told Ellen DeGeneres on Ellen.

“I’m not tired,” Sheindlin said, according to People. “You’re not tired, you’re not supposed to stop!”

No one could fault Sheindlin if she wanted to retire, though. At 77, Sheindlin now ranks as the highest-paid television personality at a whopping $48 million a year, and the 48th-richest self-made woman, according to Forbes in 2018, with an estimated net worth of $400 million.

Sheindlin was first appointed to the bar in 1982 and went on to become a prosecutor and then a family court judge. Apparently, her no-holds-barred commentary is very much a part of her and not a put-on for the show. In fact, the attitude is part of what has garnered her much admiration throughout her fan base.

No doubt, the news of the beloved Judge Judy hanging up her gavel has rocked the industry. #RuPaul Charles, host of RuPaul's Drag Race and star of #Netflix's AJ And The Queen, has made no secret of his unabashed enthusiasm for Sheindlin, and drag queen #BiancadelRio did an uncanny impersonation of the judge during one episode. #AmySchumer was also in Judge Judy's gallery in 2017, and later took to Instagram to express her love of the judge.

"Hell yeah! You know I was in the audience on #judgejudy," she captioned the post. "My sister and I sat in on the cases for the day because we love her!!!!!"

She has, quite literally, been the voice that people have grown up with for a generation. There are young men and women who are part of the way - or all of the way - through their post-secondary education and some may have even considered a career in the legal field as a result of watching Judge Judy while growing up.

The interesting thing is, she is not functioning as a judge on the show. Rather, because she's retired, she actually functions more as an arbiter or a mediator instead of a judge. Her frank advice that she's doled out on numerous occasions over the years has often been the title of her many books that she's published: Don't Pee On My Leg And Tell Me It's Raining or Beauty Fades, Dumb Is Forever might be two of her better known titles in which she doles out advice in her usual personably blunt manner. She has no patience for foolishness, which has made her courtroom one of the more entertaining ones to observe over the last two and a half decades.

To be sure, Sheindlin has had her fair share of critics over the years because of her quick wit and frank approach to the cases she hears, with some accusing her of making it somehow OK to make fun of people who are less fortunate. While we are all entitled to our own opinion, there is very definitely something to be said about Sheindlin's longevity and her utter determination to, as poet Dylan Thomas said, "not go gentle into that good night."

The fact that Sheindlin is now about to head up a show called Judy Justice, one might think that the title alone invokes images of Sheindlin walking into the courtroom in superhero tights and a cape. We can only assume that will not be the case, but to be sure, our beloved Judge Judy will be around for years to come.
