In fictional media, there no more pure powerful characters quite like those who are Jedi Masters and Avatars. Two characters types who have extraordinary powers witness in media. The two are selfless, heroic, kind, and they help people against oppress forces like the Empire or any opposing nations. Really, they are quite similar, yet they are some differences between them. So let’s compare these two character types and see what makes them similar and different from each other.

To compare these two character types, we must understand what is the purpose of a Jedi and Avatar. According to the Wookieepedia, the wiki of the Star Wars fandom, a Jedi, also known by the title of Lord Jedi in ancient times, “was a devotee to the ways of the Jedi Order, an ancient order of protectors united by their ability to harness the power of the Force. Adhering to a doctrine that favored the light side of the Force, the Jedi aspired to attain a state of inner tranquility through calmness and meditation while avoiding emotions affiliated with the dark side of the Force, such as anger and hatred.” As to the Avatar, according to Wikipedia, the Avatar is “an international arbiter whose duty is to maintain harmony among the four nations, and act as a mediator between humans and spirits. By tradition, a new Avatar will travel the world to learn all four bending arts, after which they will begin in earnest their role as global peacekeeper. The Avatar can enter a condition known as "the Avatar State", in which they temporarily gain the skills and knowledge of all their past incarnations. Although this is when the Avatar is most powerful, if the Avatar were ever to be killed while in the Avatar State, the reincarnation cycle would end and the Avatar would never again be reborn.” In some ways, both Jedi & Avatar has the power that’s beyond their world with the Force & the four classical elements, which are Water, Earth, Fire, & Air. They both are their to make peace and balance within their own world. In additional, both Jedi & Avatar can communicate with past Jedis & Avatars. The only difference is that a Jedi can be anyone who has a great connection to the Force, no matter it’s from the light or the dark side. With the Avatar, it’s only one individual who has the power to use all four elements. So to conclude, a Jedi can have multiple people who uses the Force, while the Avatar is only a singular person.

As for their powers, it’s actually interesting to see how much similar they are. The Jedi has the Force, which is described by StarWars.com as, “a mysterious energy field created by life that binds the galaxy together,” which allows them to use telekinesis to levitate objects, push or choke individual, tricking minds, lightning and predicts actions before it happens. The Avatar has use of all the four elements, which are usually used by benders, who have the ability to telekinetically manipulate and control the element corresponding to their nation, using gestures based on Chinese martial arts. So their powers uses telekinetic control of their perspective source of power. They also can use lightning, if both Jedi and Avatar are able to mastered it first. The difference is how they use their powers. A Jedi can levity objects and people, and use mind trickery. The Avatar can only use Water, Earth, Fire, and Wind with gestures or movements to control such elements. All in all, the powers are different, yet uses the same method of control to use their powers.

As of how they deal with conflicts, it’s the same as well. Jedi Masters uses their powers to keep balance to the force and peace in the galaxy. The Avatars uses their powers to keep balance between the human world and the spirit world. The difference I see from these two characters is the way they act in conflicts. Jedi Masters have a code, known as the Jedi code. The code is, “There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force.” They don’t use emotions and their compose whenever they dealt with battle. The Avatar have the guidances of their previous increnation and teaching of the four elements. As previously mention, they have the Avatar State to increased their powers. All in all, the Jedi & the Avatar have a similar way to deal with conflicts, but it’s only on different ideals and teaching.

In conclusion, Jedi Masters and Avatars are alike. They have great powers with similar ideals and beliefs. Their powers are rooted in telekinetic and they keep balance and peace. They only difference are how they use their source of powers, how to act in conflicts, and how Jedi Masters are multiple people, while the Avatar is only one individual.
