In Preparation for Love and Thunder

With the newest Thor movie being released soon I think it's important to shed some light on Jane Foster’s Thor. Now there are some internet fanboys who have a fundamental problem with Jane taking the mantle, but those children are wrong. Many people that aren’t the actual God of Thunder have taken the hammer and therefore wielded his power.

Jane’s story started when she was diagnosed with cancer. Knowing it was terminal Jane accepted that she was nearing the end of her life. She ends up on Asgard after accepting an invitation from Thor to be a representative for Midgard for the Congress of Worlds. Thor obviously finds out she has cancer but she has refused all magical treatments.

In the “Original Sin” storyline Nick Fury reveals a secret to Thor, one that causes him to lose the ability to wield Mjolnir. An unidentified woman wields Mjolnir against Malekith the Accursed. We later find out that this woman is Jane.

Wielding the power of Thor gives her strength in the moment, as she possesses the power of a God. However the transformation causes all toxins to be released from her body, including the chemotherapy that she is on to help fight the cancer. So turning into Thor makes her simultaneously weaker and stronger.

Now we have not seen much of what Love and Thunder is going to hold for us, and for that I am glad. But I am genuinely not tied to this origin story for her. I don’t think that we have to take away Thor’s worthiness in order for Jane to be worthy. I also don’t think we need the threat of her dying, if they do not use the cancer storyline however they need to find a way to add stakes for her character. Thus far Jane’s depiction in the Thor movies has been mediocre at best. I can’t think of anyone that really cares for her character or cares about her character. So they need something to make us care about her taking the hammer. I do love that it looks like the women are fully in charge of this movie. Honestly I would expect nothing less from Taika.

In War of the Realms Jane also becomes a Valkyrie so there really are a lot of directions they can take her character after she gets the hammer. I know Hemsworth has made it clear that he isn’t going anywhere unless they make him, which is great. I love Chris. But in the context of the MCU he has Stormbreaker so there's no actual reason to take the hammer from Jane. She could just be Thor for a while and rule alongside Valkyrie while Chris’ Thor goes off and has adventures with the Guardians or pops back down to earth. Or Jane could be the new protector of earth. There are literally endless possibilities and I hope they don’t just tease us with Jane having hot new powers and then take it away. That said the movie stills we got of both Jane and Valkyrie did have a healthy reminder attached to them that I am in fact a little bit gay. So this is going to be a fun movie going experience.

After Multiverse of Madness I am desperately trying to not have any expectations and go in with the mindset that this might suck. But Taika Waititi wouldn’t give us anything that sucks so I am also holding onto hope. There will be a review out the weekend the film is officially released so be on the lookout for that. I genuinely hope this movie is everything I hope it will be.
