J.K. Rowling Narrated a New Film and She Wants Us to Support It!
In this new thought-provoking film narrated by the Harry Potter author herself, she explains why children should never be in institutions.
J.K. Rowling is truly one beautiful person. In her project - an even bigger project than... if I may say, the new upcoming Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - she aims to see to the end of orphanages in her lifetime.
J.K. Rowling founded a charity that became Lumos after her dreadful experiences of seeing the situation of orphans in institutions. Lumos began in countries in Central and Eastern Europe "where institutionalization of children was a major concern, especially in formerly Communist countries." Now though, as a part of Lumos' global focus on children in orphanages, it now has teams in countries such as Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Moldova and Ukraine, and has recently opened a US office.
“ Lumos works in partnership with governments, professionals and carers, communities, families and children, to transform outdated systems that drive families apart. Together with our partners we replace institutions with community based services that provide children with access to health, education and social care tailored to their individual needs. This supports families to provide the loving care their children need to develop to their full potential and build a positive future for themselves.”
In this new thought-provoking film narrated by the Harry Potter author herself, she explains why children should never be in institutions. It's a part of the NGO charity Lumos (also the light-giving spell in the HP books) which is dedicated to transforming lives of over 8 million disadvantaged children in institutions and so-called orphanages around the globe.
I narrate the new @lumos film, explaining why children should never be in #institutions. Please watch and share! — J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) September 4, 2015
All this is to bring an end to child institutionalization by 2050; to help keep families together, to support families and to give children the love and care that they deserve. We can all agree that a child growing up without love and support (even when they have immediate relatives) is the saddest situation ever.
“Lumos has a single, simple goal: to end the institutionalization of children worldwide by 2050. This is ambitious, but achievable. It is also essential. Eight million voiceless children are currently suffering globally under a system that, according to all credible research, is indefensible. We owe them far, far better. We owe them families.”
She helped transform our childhoods by writing Harry Potter, and now she's still infinitely transforming childhoods and families with her charitable work. She even lost her billionaire status due to charitable givings!
J.K. Rowling is just one of those many celebrities that use their fame and fortune to make the world a better place. Thank you, Jo, for everything that you do. You are a truly magical, inspirational, and beautiful human being.
