Insidious: Out of the Further

The red door is back, and as the title suggests, we are out of the further! How did we get there? What happened? Who opened the door? Let’s dive in.

Gemma (Amelia Eve) and her daughter, Maya (Island Austin) reside peacefully in their suburban home where Gemma grew up. Gemma suffers from a traumatic incident from her childhood and slowly learns there’s more to her past than she realized. As time goes on, she sees people who haunt her. Gemma must unravel the mystery to retain her sanity and protect her daughter. Will she succeed, or will she head down a path that led to her childhood trauma?

Horrifyingly Great Moments

The film follows the Insidious franchise. Will you need to watch all films to understand the plot? No, you do not. The film works well on its own and the plot is easy to follow. The opening scene grabs the audience. It’s the perfect hook. The audience witnesses the root of Gemma’s trauma and when the scene reaches its end, it leaves the moviegoer questioning “what just happened?” The odd events follow Gemma and each episode hits with a subtle unfold. No loud music to make the audience jump or scream. The sound editors found the perfect sweet spot with the background music to provide the best ambience of striking the fear chord inside the audience. The visuals play around with shading and darkness while the camera follows Gemma, showing enough to catch what happens, but putting the audience in the scene with Gemma. One particular scene catches the audience off guard, setting a cold stream of fear down the spinal cord. If you’re looking for a scare, this is the film for you.

Overall Rating

The plot worked for me. Witnessing the opening and thrusted into the mystery of the film, then allowing that mystery to drive the plot added to the perfection of the film. The film slowly unfolds the mystery scene by screen and the direction of the plot, the problems Gemma experiences, leads to the end of the film. The ending tying back to the beginning left me satisfied. And, of course, the plot twist reveal caught me off guard. The only plot problem I have with the film is I don’t understand why Gemma opted to return to her childhood home. She briefly explains why she returned, but considering what happened to her, I don’t feel it justifies returning. I felt I needed stronger reason for her desire to return and live in the house besides what was given to us.

I love how the connected and important the film’s characters are in moving the plot. Not one character I felt held an unimportant role in the film. The actors performed well too. They brought their specific character to life on the screen. I didn’t feel any of the acting was forced or over performed. Amelia and Island worked in tandem to carry this film and drive the fear to the audience. One of my favorite scenes is the scene with Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Lin Shaye. Their synchronized performance and the connection with the cinematography and sound during her introduction scene brought a lot of tension to the film. It hooked me and had me close to shouting at Gemma to do Claire instructed her to do.

I really enjoyed being scared without the typical loud music overshadowing the terror on the screen. The visuals did enough to build tension and fear without relying on a loud squeal, cymbal clash, or any other instruments used to surprise the audience. I feel horror films which are able to create fear without using typical scare tactics deliver a stronger sense of horror. Last, the production crew did not saturate the film with gore. The scene with gore kept it at a minimal, providing enough to give you an idea.

From the plot, the acting, visuals and sound, I enjoyed this next chapter to the franchise. Will it lead to another film? I don’t know and honestly; I think this would be the best way to end it, however based on what we learn about the further, the possibility of another remains open. For me, this is a 4.5/5. Honestly, the fact Gemma returned to the house still rubs me wrong. LOL.
