'Insatiable' on Netflix

This show is awful.

If you don't know what Insatiable is or even Netflix, you must live under a rock and how are you even reading this? This show was first teased a few months ago and had so many people excited for a show seemingly about body positivity and Debby Ryan. The day it released, I was on top of it to see if it was worth the watch, which I quickly found out it was not. Ahead, there will definitely be spoilers and angry ranting, so if you haven't seen it and want to see for yourself then don't read on.

I won't always go episode by episode, but in the first episode we see "Fatty Patty" and her struggles in school being made fun of for her weight; she has one friend, her best friend, Nonnie.

First of all, Nonnie is obviously a lesbian and in love with Patty but she refuses to admit that to herself for nearly the whole season. We're introduced to two rival lawyers in town whose names are both Bob—very creative: Bob Armstrong and Bob Barnard. When we first meet Armstrong it's in the first minutes of the show to set the scene. He's also a pageant coach and coaching a fellow classmate of Patty's. When she loses the pageant, her mother runs on stage and accuses Armstrong of molesting her daughter as the reason she wasn't focused. This is obviously a lie, and also Bob Armstrong is so clearly into men.

This is Bob Armstrong.

After explaining their stories and backgrounds and whatever, Patty is in a convenient store with her friend Nonnie, right? Her crush, Brick, who just so happens to be Bob Armstrong's son, is in the store as well. You might think, "Oh, what a coincidence," but no, Patty goes there on certain days on purpose just because he's there. Nonnie asks out Brick for Patty, and of course he declines. Patty buys herself some chocolate and sits outside on the sidewalk to eat it in peace when a homeless man comes up and asks for the candy and proceeds to tell her, "it's not like you need it," when she declines. This clearly angers Patty, so she punches him in the nose. He then comes back at her and breaks her entire jaw, putting her in the hospital with her jaw wired shut for months on a liquid diet, causing her to lose weight and clearly making her more attractive. Where Bob Armstrong comes into play is to be her lawyer, because the homeless man is suing Patty, which is stupid and he clearly loses.

After meeting Patty and seeing how undoubtedly gorgeous she is, Bob wants to coach her for pageants so he can get back into the game. Where this show starts to get extremely annoying to me is when Patty mistakes Bob's interest in her for love. Listen, Bob is married, he has a son, and he has absolutely zero interest in her like that, but she is dead set on like, doing him for the first seven episodes. It's literally her mission.

Don't get me wrong, the acting in this show isn't bad at all. To be quite honest, this show would be so great without Patty. She seeks revenge on literally everyone (way to take the high road, Patts). She screws up all of her plans, they think her teratoma is a demon, and she's full of negativity. Her whole life, her best friend Nonnie has loved her unconditionally, yet she wants to seek out revenge on anyone whose ever said one mean thing to her when Nonnie always tells her how gorgeous she is? They try to play her toxicity off on being raised by a drunken whore mother who's never home and not having a father figure. In a way, as well, they blame it on her being overweight.

^Bob Barnard^

Later on into the show we find out that the "attractive" Bob Barnard that all the wives in the town love is actually bisexual, having sex with the other Bob along with other men over the years, which ultimately ruins his marriage. Towards the end of the season, Patty murders an old lover of Bob Armstrong's, Patty ruins Bob A's marriage over petty stuff, and kills her ex-boyfriend who just so happens to be a kidnapper and the pastor's son.

I'm probably going to watch the next season to do a follow up and make my opinions concrete, but this show is just garbage. Netflix has a lot of hit originals but this is not one of them. I think you have to be a child to think this show is good. If I had to describe this show in three words it would be: hectic, toxic, and immature.

On another note, I can't believe they cast Debby for this role. Why cast a 25 year-old to play a 17- to 18-year-old? I mean, clearly it was because her body is more mature and this is kind of a "mature" content role. She does almost have sex with the homeless guy and almost kill him. Ending this completely, stay tuned for more nonsense from me and for the season two of Insatiable.
