Plot summary.

This is considered to be one of the most confusing films David Lynch has ever made. A jazz musician (Bill Pullman) and his wife (Patricia Arquette) receive a videotape one morning, and they discover that its contents are a little bit of their daily life. From then on, they receive such tapes every morning. One day, the musician discovers that the tape shows him killing his wife! When he rushed into the bedroom, he found his wife dead in bed.

The police took him away. One night later, the musician who was sitting in the jail cell became a young repairman, and the baffled police had to let him go. The repairman was highly valued by the triad boss for his excellent car repair skills, when he discovered that the boss's woman looked the same as his wife, only with different hair colors. The boss's woman took the initiative to seduce the repairman, and the two absconded with the money. When they come to the desert highway, the maintenance man has wild sex with the woman, after which he turns back into a musician ......

After watching this film is still as confusing as most people, if I had not read most of the plot analysis, I might still think this film is too confusing. The symbolism of the references is very confusing and no one can make a complete analysis of the film. Except, of course, for most real critics or the director himself. What we see and what we think is just a spectator's point of view to do time and time again YA.

Just like David Lynch's first film. This film to a certain extent follows the style of plausible but not. Maybe there are too many hints or metaphors in the film, we should get the answer if we carefully study the details of many places. For example, from the beginning of the door someone talking, to the end of the echo, the original all the words are the main man as the saxophonist of the band when said, Dirk Lawrence is dead. This is also a very clear explanation when the main man attends that party suddenly out of the mouth of this sentence is not without reason.

As for why the man wants to kill his wife, it is obvious that his wife cheated on him when he was living with him. This was foreshadowed from the beginning. The wife asks the man if he doesn't mind not coming over tomorrow night, and the reason is reading, the man is pressed under the wife's look a little panicked. And when the man attended the party his wife was shy about the party host and his past. And did not give the man a reasonable explanation. And after returning home, the man let his wife stay in the car while he chose to go home to drip. When the hero returned, his wife's look became slutty. This is another hint that only the wife may know the reason for the mysterious person in the house.

And the pale man may be a virtual image set out for the sake of plot advancement and development. And this image is to allow the hero to have more explanation of his motive for the murder. Human nature does not have all kinds of play in a light, when the night falls is the time to test the origin of human nature. And the main man several times when the hallucinations are not in the daytime. This also illustrates the role of darkness in inducing the essence of human nature.

We can learn from the mouth of the two detectives, the hero is true to the conclusion that the act of killing his wife. As for other things such as the main man in prison into another person should be a near-death hallucination. The main man is facing the trial of death. This has been said before because he was sentenced to electrocution, so the hero's life expectancy seems to be coming to an end. As with another work years later, "Illusion of Death", people always look back on their lives when they are dying. Unlike him, the male protagonist in this film sets himself up for a very convoluted plot while allowing himself to relax for a while.

This similar plot is reminiscent of the Hong Kong film "zombie" near death for himself to direct a very good work. In this film is also, a repairman and cheating are a very suitable pair. So the hero gives himself another identity as the repairman, and under this identity, he seems to experience a time, so that "others hear the sound of raindrops falling on the green grass". And he imagined for himself a family and many friends, and even a regular girlfriend. All of this is the aftermath of the male protagonist's previous injury. Only in the time of death will all these factors be saved up.

But fantasy is only fantasy after all. Fantasy is out of the perfect object but from time to time it makes them a headache. Because the real self is undergoing electrocution. The typical result is that the hero will still inevitably die, and all those left behind fantasies will end in a very logical way after death. This should have been a common film formula, but for this film is a high skill. Because the end of the film is a kind of open ending, the car as at the beginning as in the fly. And the long chase has no end. This is what makes this film worthy of praise.

The mysterious white-faced man is another dark personality of your hero because, in the end, this mysterious man helps the hero kill the mob boss. And the dark promenade foreshadows the transformation of the hero's personality, in other words, the exposure of the hero's true nature. Unfortunately, the director did not give us a very precise answer, everything is our guesses. This may also be the reason why this film looks messy but has very many interpretations.
