It's hard to believe that it has been twelve years since the first Paranormal Activity was released. The theaters were filled and there was jump scares to spare as people found their inner "oh shit" and "holy crap" moment. Paranormal Activity, made for less than fifty-thousand dollars, scored one of the biggest and most impressive returns on an independent film in the history of the business. Since its release, it's spawned a movie franchise with the most recent Paranormal Activity coming out this Friday, October 29th, 2021. If you're not watching Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin on Paramount plus, perhaps revisiting the original is in your plans. It's definitely in mine.

Friday Night October 29th, 2021

After Paranormal Activity I'm planning to bust out the old school slasher flicks. This year, for some reason, I feel the most visceral need to enjoy the old-school movies. After Paranormal I'll be visiting an old dear friend. We'll be visiting good old Robert England as he wreaks havoc and chaos on the dreams of Johnny Depp and Heather Langenkamp. It's time to take a trip back to Elm Street. One, two, Freddy's coming for you...

What's a better way to tie up Friday night than a night with a haunted house and Freddy Krueger? Why don't we add the battle of the ages? It's cheesy, it's campy, it's everything that Halloween Horror should be. When Freddy can't figure out a way to get back into the killing game and back to his child hunting ways because the kids aren't afraid, he elicits the help of America's most notorious slasher, Jason Voorhees of the Friday the 13th Saga.

Jason runs amuck on Elm Street, racking up kill after kill, as he starts to reintroduce the children of Elm Street to fear. Sweet, tasty, fear that Freddy salivates over as its' smell permeates his senses and gets him excited. The battle of the big leaguers, Freddy VS Jason isn't one to miss for fans of truly campy horror. All hail Kane Hodder and Robert England.

Saturdays before Halloween are an absolute horror fest with nothing but the best of horror playing all through the day. And, out of the best in American horror, one can't forget to go back to the early days of Horror and include Friday The 13th and the origin of Jason Voorhees. For my ode to my namesake (Jason's have to stick together), I'll be visiting Camp Crystal Lake and watching the sex, drugs, and bloody roles that made the first appearance of Jason an iconic start to one of the longest-running movie characters ever.

For all those kids and adults out there that find dolls creepy, look no further than the favorite good guy of the 80s, Chucky. Now, while Chucky spawned an entire franchise that brought new heights of campy goodness to the screen, the original was downright spooky in spots. The idea of a pint-sized doll that has been possessed by the spirit of a psycho killer brought a new spice to hauntings. If kids' dolls didn't creep you out after seeing the original Chucky, perhaps try the movie Human Centipede!

Moving right along we'll make a stop in Haddonfield Illinois. Every Halloween I sit on the couch, turn down the lights as it gets dark, and take a trip back in time. Jamie Lee Curtis, our favorite scream queen, was young and beautiful, times were simpler, and a once little boy throws on a William Shatner-inspired mask as an adult to go on the ultimate Halloween night killing spree. Little kids run and hide, the boogeyman is coming. After making my way through Halloween, Halloween 2, and skipping Halloween 3, I'll make it to Halloween 4, the return of Michael Myers. Then it'll be time to move along...saving the best for Halloween night.

What's your favorite scary movie?

Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette brought the youthful screams and love of fear to the screens in 1996 and should have stopped with the third movie. So many stars, so few knives. If you haven't heard, there's another in the franchise being released in 2022. Get ready to SCREAM!

Halloween

Halloween is an absolute must on Halloween. I'm going to enjoy my way through Halloween Retribution and then go right onto the newest installments in the adventures of a misunderstood boy, Michael Myers. In the new editions, we are meant to forget Halloweens 3, 4, 5, The Curse Of Michael Myers, H20, and Retribution. This becomes especially true of Retribution as Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) finally dies at the hands of her evil brother. After what's now 40 years, Michael escapes and returns home to Haddonfield to finish his unholy work. Halloween and Halloween Kills are brought to you by Blumhouse and are a return to old-school terror.

Long past my pathological need to go out and raise a little hell, I think I'll let Clive Barker's Hellraiser take care of it for me. One of the most visually stunning horror movies of my youth, Hellraiser both horrified and titillated. My mid-Sunday fun will be in the bowels of Hell hanging with Pinhead and his minions.

Rounding out Halloween night, after Pinhead's scared me out of my popcorn and soda binge, the night can only be perfectly rounded out by spending some time with my favorite demon, monster, vampire, werewolf, and ghost hunters. Proving that heroes come in the shape of everyday humans doing extraordinary things, after my weekend horror fest, I'll spend a little time with the Winchesters.

For fifteen years I enjoyed the boys Winchester as they fought them all. From east coast to west exploring every possible urban legend, and piece of American Supernatural lore, Sam, Dean, and a cast of Scoobies fought the devil himself, saved the world, and did it in style as they traveled the highways in a classic muscle car while they saved the girls. They're a perfect part of any Halloween binge-watch session.

There'd be more, but it is only a three-night, two-day, weekend and I do have a life. Thanks for reading.
