I don't care about the Black Widow movie anymore

Too little, too late

I've waited for a Black Widow movie for almost 8 years. Now that it's almost here I just. Don't. Care.

When Natasha Romanoff made her first appearance in Iron Man 2 I believed a Black Widow movie couldn't be too far away. It didn't happen. Obviously. Then Avengers came out and I thought "This is it. Now's the time to make it!." I thought they were going to make an origin story about Black Widow featuring Hawkeye. Nope. After 10 years there was still no solo Black Widow movie! There was seemingly no reason for this. Especially during Phase 2 of the MCU. A perfect time to delve deeper into the spy's history but NO, we got nothing.

Fans were raving for a Black Widow movie. We latched on to the only female member of the group and we wanted her to have a movie. What was so complicated about that? They announced Captain Marvel in 2014 which was great but it was slated to be released almost 4 and a half years after it was announced eventually pushed to be 5 years. All this time fans are still asking, "Where is Black Widow's movie?"

Marvels treatment of it's female characters is kind of heinous. They're always just supporting players and never get a chance to shine on their own. Peggy Carter shined on screen in Captain America and got to have an awesome short series on ABC about her life post The First Avenger. We watched her grieve and take steps to move on from someone she loved and lost. However, it was cancelled after only 2 short seasons.

Marvel wasn't able to ride the hype for the characters that already had it. Now the wave has completely passed by. Marvel refused to give us her backstory so we took what we got. Now, her story is over. We watched her die. How can you even begin to capitalize on a story based on someone who is dead? Yes, it's comic books and no one stays dead for long, but what is even the point of her sacrifice in Endgame if we just bring her back.

I've dedicated a good portion of my life to Marvel. I have seen every single Marvel movie and show, I have my Disney+ account so I can watch the new content when it comes out, I am a dedicated fan of the MCU, but I feel that Marvel is not working for its fans. Marvel has had a huge problem with diversity in its films. After 10 years I can count on one hand how many films are lead by a woman or a person of color: 2 1/2. (I only say half because technically Guardians of the Galaxy is an ensemble movie that stars Zoe Saldana as Gamora but I also don't think that it wholly counts because the main character is really Peter Quill.)

It just feels like Marvel should have made this movie a long time ago. We should be getting new stories about different characters now that Natasha's story is over. I know that many other fans who are women feel the same way as I do, look no further than the tags on tumblr.

Fans want to see more stories from women by women in the genre that we love. Why can't Marvel with their billions of dollars do that? Even if it were true that female led films bomb regardless of quality (it's not, look at Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Bridesmaids, Hustlers) Marvel would be able to take the hit! Diversity in media is a real problem. There needs to be all sorts of stories from all sorts of people across all genres.

I feel like Jo from Little Women talking about how women are so much more than what people think they are. Women are allowed to be and do whatever they want without people thinking theres some ulterior motive. If you ever want to get mad just go through the Captain Marvel subreddits. It's filled with men who think the only reason she exists is to subdue SJW.

In the next decade I hope Marvel steps up and creates more films that are lead by women, queer people, and POC. Unfortunately, I have very low expectations. It's 2020, step up Marvel.

Black Widow is set to be released on April, 24 2020.
