Hugh Jackman Reveals the Official Synopsis for Logan—What Does It Tell Us?

Promising to be a bloody, brutal Western, Logan looks set to be the most atmospheric superhero movie to date. As we learned with Deadpool, Fox is developing real skill at marketing the X-Men movies; we're eagerly anticipating a second trailer, but Hugh Jackman is doing everything he can to ensure we're still talking about Logan while we wait!

"Mutants... They're gone now."

One of the greatest mysteries of Logan is this: what happened to all the mutants? Surprisingly, out first clue may not be in the film at all, but in the recent revelations about an #XMen spinoff TV series.

While the upcoming Legion series is set in the same universe as the X-Men movies, it's essentially something of an aside (although there are rumors Patrick Stewart will be making a cameo). That's not the case, though, with another series Fox is working on, which is said to be strongly "interconnected" with the movies. Significantly, it occurs in a world where anti-mutant legislation has recently been passed, and will star young mutants on the run.

Assuming that this is part of the rebooted timeline launched in Days of Future Past, this is the first hint at the future of the mutant race. It suggests that anti-mutant sentiment will become increasingly popular, and that mutants will be rounded up. What happens next, though, is anybody's guess; Logan's trailer implied that mutants have ceased to manifest.

Fans are convinced that the mysterious Essex Corp is somehow responsible; perhaps they somehow discovered a way to deactivate the X-gene, meaning that no new mutants manifest. Personally, I refuse to believe that Essex Corp is innocent; after all, the company is named after classic X-Men villain Mr. Sinister!

Xavier and Logan Have Given Up

It seems that Patrick Stewart's Xavier and Hugh Jackman's Logan have retreated from the world, settling down on the Mexican border. Interestingly enough, though, all the evidence suggests that even their powers are acting up; Charles's mind is fragile and weakened, while Logan's healing factor doesn't seem to be performing as well as it used to. This may simply be age, but more likely it's a side-effect of whatever has prevented the birth of new mutants.

The fact that these two powerhouses have given up gives us a strong indicator of just how hopeless things are for mutants.

A Young Mutant Arrives

We know that Logan will introduce us to Dafne Keen's X-23. Over in the comics, X-23 was a female clone of Wolverine, created as an assassin. All indications are that Logan will stick fairly faithfully to this origin, meaning that Essex Corp — having potentially wiped out the mutant race — is now creating living weapons.

According to this synopsis, it's X-23 who finds Logan and Xavier, not the other way round. Clearly, she breaks free from Essex Corp, and hunts down the last two remaining mutants for help. For all that the two mutants may have given up on things, they'll never be able to resist a plea for help!

This is the perfect synopsis; it supports everything we already knew, confirms details we'd already guessed at, but only deepens the sense of mystery. Logan looks set to be one of the most exciting superhero movies of the year, promising to be deeply atmospheric. We can only wait for the next trailer!
