We’ve all been there before. One thousand channels and nothing to watch, ten different streaming services and nothing to see. “Let me check out what’s on Netflix,” you think, and then twenty minutes later your food is cold and you still haven’t found the perfect movie. It’s frustrating, I know! So what’s the secret? How do you break free of the dreaded “Watcher’s Block,” as I like to call it?

Obviously, the answer is Nicholas Cage.

Yeah, yeah, I know what you’re thinking. I can hear some of you groaning already. But just trust me on this: With a prolific filmography of good, bad, and everything in-between, there’s a Nic Cage film out there for everyone. This mix of film quality is practically a cornerstone of Cage’s career and sometimes a good “bad” movie is exactly what we need to push past that "What to watch?" slump.

To help walk you through some of my top Nicholas Cage films, I’ve broken down everything by genre and given out the title of a similar recent and/or popular film to help you determine your best fit. And because no one likes to read page after page of long, drawn out explanations (looking at you, recipe blogs!) I’ve also included a summary of important info, such as film length, other actors, and if the film can be found on any streaming sites.

Are you ready?

Then let me introduce your perfect Nic Cage film...

For all the Horror fans out there…

If you loved the 2019 hit, Midsommar, give The Wicker Man a try!

Culty vibes and paganism abound in both of these films about outsiders getting more than they bargained for while visiting remote communities. Both set in pastoral, idyllic landscapes, you’ll love the Wicker Man if you enjoyed the uneasy feeling that Midsommar left in many of its viewers. Not to mention, there are some meme-worthy lines and scenes in this 2006 Nic Cage film, some of which you might already be familiar with. “Not the bees!” anyone?

Genre: Horror

Year Made: 2006 (remake of 1973 film by the same name)

Film Length: 1 hr 42 min

Other Actors: Ellen Burstyn, Leelee Sobieski, Frances Conroy

Streaming: Available for $2.99 to rent on YouTube and Amazon PrimeVideo

Keeping the Horror train going, no movie recommendation list would be complete without a Vampire flick…

For all the fans of 1994’s classic, Interview with the Vampire, check out Vampire’s Kiss!

Men grapple with the changes wrought on them by their transformation into vampires in these two horror films from the last decades of the 20th century. Set in a more modern time period than its counterpart, Vampire’s Kiss takes place in the 80s and delivers Nicholas Cage at his most unhinged. This movie is highly recommended if you think you’ve seen everything the Vampire genre has to offer or if the thought of Cage screaming the alphabet and running around New York City wearing plastic fangs sounds like the perfect remedy to a stressful day at work.

Genre: Horror, Vampire

Year Made: 1988

Film Length: 1 hr 43 min

Other Actors: Maria Conchita Alonso, Jennifer Beals

Streaming: Pluto TV, Shudder (But hurry! This title leaves Shudder on March 31st!)

For those of you who love a good Science Fiction movie…

If you loved the trippy vibe of 2018’s Annihilation, then check out Color out of Space!

Chock full of strange creatures and disturbing sci-fi/horror action, Color out of Space is a no-brainer if you enjoyed the psychedelic world of Annihilation. Both set in remote areas that are being slowly overtaken by extraterrestrial events, Color out of Space promises an unsettling, mind-bending journey with a gorgeous color palette to boot.

Genre: Sci-Fi

Year Made: 2019

Film Length: 1 hr 51 min

Other Actors: Madeleine Arthur, Joely Richardson, Julian Hilliard

Streaming: Sling TV, Amazon Prime Video

For all the Action fans out there…

If you loved the Jason Bourne films, try Face/Off!

Action packed is an understatement for both films and Face/Off delivers on the cat-and-mouse dynamic that was popular with fans of the Jason Bourne series, but with a twist. There’s some sci-fi antics and terrible CGI but you’ll never forget this film for being so completely over the top with its plot and its action sequences. If a good action fix is what you’re looking for, this 1997 film is a go-to!

Genre: Action

Year Made: 1997

Film Length: 2 hr 20 min

Other Actors: John Travolta, Gina Gershon, Joan Allen

Streaming: Sling TV, Amazon Prime (through AMC+)

Like with the Horror genre, there had to be more than one Action pick...

If you loved Keanu Reeves’ classic action flick Speed, then Con Air might be your next favorite movie!

For those of you who like a little more high-speed with your action films, Con Air is the recommended choice. Like Speed, Con Air centers on a high-stakes attempt to foil a deadly plot while mid-transportation. With a star-studded cast and some truly hilarious shots (the famous gif of Nic Cage’s hair blowing in the wind was born of this film), Con Air delivers an unforgettable ride that is perfect for breaking you out of your “what-to-stream?” funk.

Genre: Action

Year Made: 1997

Film Length: 2 hr 3 min

Other Actors: John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, John Cusack

Streaming: Available to rent for $3.99 on Vudu and Amazon Prime

To all my romance and rom-com lovers…

If you enjoyed the 1989 classic, When Harry Met Sally, you’ll love Moonstruck!

A classic in its own right, Moonstruck offers up a familiar take on the “falling-in-love-with-the-wrong-person" trope. Much like the will-they-won’t-they dynamic present in Harry Met Sally, Moonstruck follows a woman trying her hardest not to fall for her fiancé’s brother. With Cher starring as the leading lady, Moonstruck is an enjoyable romp that’s perfect for your next date night.

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Year Made: 1987

Film Length: 1 hr 42 min

Other Actors: Cher, Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello

To round out the genres, you always need a great Adventure film on the list…

If you loved National Treasure, then you better believe you’ll enjoy National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets!

That’s right, a Nic Cage film recommendation for a Nic Cage Film. Everybody knows the 2004 adventure staple, National Treasure, which we all love to hate (or, let’s be real, hate to love). If you feel like what your weeknight movie sesh is missing is something less serious and more silly, National Treasure 2 is a great choice. Kick back, grab some snacks, and let Nicholas Cage take you on an entertaining faux-historical journey.

Genre: Adventure

Year Made: 2007

Film Length: 2 hr 11 min

Other Actors: Diane Kruger, Jon Voight, Helen Mirren

Streaming: Disney Plus

And that's all, folks!

Hopefully by now you have one or two new movies to stream for the next time you're feeling those "nothing's on" blues. While Nicholas Cage might not be everyone's go-to actor, there are some surprising gems (and plenty of diamonds in the rough) hidden in his filmography. Whether you're in the mood for a highly rated film or just something fun to take the edge off a long week, there's a Nic Cage film out there that's perfect for you.
