How are Harry Potter and Bruce Wayne connected?

The ultimate question

What is the connection between Harry Potter and Bruce Wayne? Although at first glance they are from completely different genres, one fantasy, the other superhero, without any magical ability. Potter being quintessentially British, while Gotham is set in America. There are more similarities to these two characters than there are differences.

So what does link these two characters together? Firstly, and most obviously, they both saw their parent’s die, growing up as orphans. Although Batman was created a lot earlier and many adaptations have been made, Bruce’s age at his parent’s death depends on which comic, TV show or film you see, but it’s always during his childhood. Both characters constantly refer to their parent’s deaths, with the famous Harry quote: “BUT MY PARENTS ARE DEAD.”

Both characters are also extremely wealthily. Harry, as we know, inherited his parent’s money, which is stored in Gringotts; Bruce Wayne inherited his fathers business, Wayne Enterprises, which makes him the richest person in Gotham.

Both the characters are also famous within their own universes, although for completely different reasons. Harry, because he defeated Lord Voldemort as a baby and Bruce because of his family name and playboy lifestyle. Both their infamy is connected to their parent’s deaths and is why they are so well known.

Harry Potter is known for blaming himself for the chaos that started since Voldemort returned in The Goblet Of Fire. Throughout the Deathly Hallows book and films he is continuously saying sorry for friends dying around him. He feels responsible and feels that it’s his duty to find all the Horcruxes before everyone he knows dies. Bruce Wayne, as Batman, also feels responsible for the chaos caused throughout Gotham. In a similar way, Bruce’s actions in creating his second persona are like what Harry is trying to do throughout the series, just without the cape and bat mask. Bruce blames himself for the creation of the villains in Gotham and continues to look out for Alfred whom he cares about.

Both characters have a moping and angsty side to their personality, and like to be alone. It is well known that Batman likes to be by himself in his Bat cave, rather than join the Justice League, and in a way, Harry is the same, especially in The Order Of The Phoenix and The Goblet Of Fire where he frequently lashes out in anger, mostly at Ron!

Batman has many enemies that resurface every few comics, but the Joker will always be his ultimate enemy, the one who understands him and knows how he thinks and will act in situations. Lord Voldemort, in way ways, has a similar relationship to Harry. Voldemort has known Harry since he tried to kill him when he was baby, and has been watching him since his resurrection. Like the Joker with Batman, he knows how he thinks and what he would do for the people he loves. For example, in The Order Of The Phoenix when he forced Harry to see a fake scenario in which Sirus Black was being tortured, just to lure him to the The Hall Of Prophecies. The Joker has used similar tactics on Batman. For Example, in The Jokers Christmas episode from the Batman Animated Series the Joker says that he must either save citizens on a train that will crash or save Jim Gordon, Harvey Bullock and Barbara Gordon from acid dipping.

In conclusion, on the surface the characters of Batman and Harry Potter may seem very different, but their main characteristics are very much the same. The love and loyalty they have for their friends and the willingness to sacrifice themselves to save others. That is why we love these characters and fandoms and will love them for decades to come.
