'House of The Dragon': Why Helaena Targaryen's Death May Be One Of The Most Tragic, And Symbolic, Events Of The Dance Of Dragons
Farewell to the Dreamer.

WARNING: SPOILERS for House of The Dragon 3x08, 'The Treasons at Tumbleton'.
Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon has aired the dramatic final episode of it's penultimate third season. Following Rhaenyra's slightly manic declaration to the smallfolk that she is the Prince That Was Promised, and a chaotic battle at Tumbleton made worse by the traitorous actions of Ser Ulf the White, the season ends on a final heartbreaking twist when Rhaenyra discovers that her sister, Helaena, has jumped from the window of the Red Keep, killing both herself and her unborn baby.
Aside from the tragic nature of the event, Helaena's death may symbolise a greater problem approaching the Targaryen Dynasty. Let's take a look at both Helaena's past, and House Targaryen's future to find out why.
Cryptic Clues
Throughout the whole run of House of The Dragon, Helaena is considered somewhat odd by those around her, due to factors like her deep passion and interest in the various insects that make a home around King's Landing. Her elder brother Aegon, to whom she is betrothed, expressed his displeasure at marrying her for this reason. Some fans have even theorised that Helaena may be on the Autism spectrum.
However, there is likely a reason for Helaena's differences beyond possible neurodivergence. Over course of the show's first two seasons, Helaena delivers cryptic warnings of the future that often go unnoticed by her family members. This begins in season one, episode six, when the teenage Helaena warns that to get a dragon, Aemond will have to close an eye. Later in the season, she repeatedly warns of a 'beast beneath the boards', foreshadowing Rhaenys Targaryen bursting through the floor of the Sept on her dragon, Meleys, during Aegon II's coronation.
In the opening episode of season two, Helaena expresses her discomfort at the rat population in King's Landing, and at one point is heard murmuring 'They only want the boy', referencing the impending murder of her son, Prince Jaehaerys, at the hands of a King's Landing Ratcatcher.
In the season two finale, in a suddenly much less cryptic reveal, Helaena taunts Aemond with her foreknowledge of his death.
A Dreamer Held Captive
Helaena spent most of House of The Dragon's third season as a hostage of her sister, Queen Rhaenyra. During this season, after realising the tapestry Helaena has been working on depicts Aemond's location, Alicent admits some knowledge of Helaena's precognitive abilities to Rhaenyra, who officially acknowledges Helaena as a Dreamer, rare members of the Targaryen bloodline who receive glimpses of the future.
Helaena continues to experience visions during the season, some cryptic, like her vision of herself on the back of her dragon, Dreamfyre, or those regarding the fate of her unborn child.
Unfortunately, as stress mounts on Rhaenyra, she becomes increasingly frustrated with Helaena's seeming defiance and failure to share her visions directly with her. It is not until after Helaena's death that Rhaenyra realises the answers she sought were in the tapestry.
Magic leaving the World
In both the book, Fire and Blood, and House of The Dragon, the exact reason for Helaena's suicide is up for debate. Some fans blame Mysaria for telling Helaena she and her child would always be hostages. Others believe it has to do with Dreamers being unable to change the futures they see. She and her child would only be obstacles to what has to be. It's even possible the visions simply became too much for her.. Dragon Dreams can have an adverse affect on one's mental health, as seen with Daeron (No, not that one) the Drunken in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Either way, Helaena's death comes with an extra note of terrible symbolism. Dreamers, like Dragons, are magic, a symbol of the otherworldly power the Targaryens wield, that allowed them to take the throne. We know the Dance of Dragons led to most of the Targaryen Dragons being wiped out. We haven't seen a great deal of this so far, but it's coming in season four. Helaena is the last Dragon Dreamer for quite some time. Her death signals the beginning of the end, the first sign of magic fading.. until Daenerys Targaryen brings it back centuries later.
House of The Dragon fans are in for a lot of heartbreak when the series returns in 2028 for it's final season.
