As we know, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been attached to the villainous role of DC Comics’ Black Adam, mystical foe of Shazam (formerly known as Captain Marvel) for years, now. DC Comics introduced Shazam in 2019 film Shazam! which starring Zachary Levi as Shazam and singer/actor Asher Angel as Billy Batson, the hero in his normal form. Zachary Levi is no stranger to playing a superhero in comic book movie, as he played Fandral, one of the members of The Warrior Three in Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok. Shazam! was both a critical and box office success for DC, along with Aquaman and Wonder Woman, receiving positive reviews from critics and fans. It was directed by David F. Sandberg, whose screen credits include Light’s Out and Annabelle: Creation.

DC’s plan is to introduce Black Adam in his own solo film, and have him eventually clash with Billy Batson in the sequel to 2019’s Shazam! which we now know is titled Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Black Adam is typically portrayed as Shazam’s villainous counterpart, as he possesses the same abilities and powers. Recently, Black Adam has been portrayed as an antihero in the comics, so perhaps we will see Black Adam as an antihero sometime in the future DC films.

There have been many hints and rumors surrounding the character and his future appearances in DC films. There were casting rumors for his film that included some members from JSA or known as Justice Society of America. In the comics, some of its members include Green Lantern, Superman, Robin, The Flash, Commander Steel, Power Girl, Doctor Fate, Sandman, Atom Smasher, Hawkgirl, Black Canary, and many more. Thanks to DC FanDome, we now know that the JSA members Black Adam will face will be Atom Smasher, Cyclone, Doctor Fate, and Hawkman. And, at last, the official logo for DC’s Black Adam has been revealed.

On a recent Instagram post from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, he shared new concept art featuring his portrayal of Black Adam. It included a very enthusiastic caption: “The hierarchy of power in the DC UNIVERSE is about to change. BLACK ADAM arrives TOMORROW at DC FanDome. Personally, I salute my Warner Bros. & DC partners for creating this historic opportunity for fans to absorb our entire DC UNIVERSE while we all continue to manage the challenges of COVID. Well done. The man in black is coming to crush them all.” One may be wondering whether the phrase "them all" may refer to anyone specifically. Could he be referring to the Shazam’s family when he states “them all?” Or could he perhaps be referring to the aforementioned Justice Society of America members? Or is it just a broad, sweeping statement? At face value, it seems like it could be anyone's guess.

Then again, David F. Sandberg, who is back to helm Shazam! Fury of the Gods has gotten in on fun with his tweet on Twitter. If his words are a direct response, then perhaps the Shazam family is whom The Rock is addressing. Sandberg's tweet reads, “Well… There’s six on our team. And we have… capes. I guess. Stylish capes.” This seems to indicate that an electrifying taste of the new DCEU’s own Black Adam will be featured and portrayed. It is pretty exciting how the plan is to have Black Adam cross over with Shazam at some point in the future, with expectation of Billy Batson will have his hands full having to deal with a foe who is very dangerous given his mystical powers. It is also neat to see David S. Sandberg building up the hype of the inevitable stand-off between his own set of characters from Shazam! and Black Adam.
