James Gunn's New DC Universe

James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy and the new co-chairman of DC Studios, is developing a Superman film that will not feature actor Henry Cavill, who said it was "not the easiest news" after only recently announcing his return to the character.

"Peter and I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn't be more over-the-moon about; we'll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the year," the new executive tweeted Wednesday evening.

Gunn's upcoming Superman movie will take the character in a different manner, focusing on the superhero's beginnings. The announcement comes at a critical juncture for DC Studios and its parent company, Warner Brothers, which has been eliminating hundreds of projects to save money since its merger with Discovery, Inc.

According to some rumors, Gunn may direct the movie as well as write it.

Henry Cavill as Superman

No More Snyder-verse

Cavill's Superman is a product of Zack Snyder's Snyder-verse, and although he could have been merged into the new DC Universe, addressing the character's background would have been difficult and perhaps not a reboot at all.

“Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”

According to some reports, Gunn, his co-president Peter Safran, and Cavill recently met and are all excited to find something for Cavill to tackle in the comic book world.

“But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

Superman and Black Adam

The Revelation

Cavill revealed he will not be returning to his role as Superman in an Instagram message.

“It’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life,” Cavill penned. “I respect that James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

Cavill has donned the red cape since the 2013 film Man of Steel and most recently appeared in a cameo in Black Adam earlier this year. He confirmed his return to portray Superman in October, after quitting from the main role in Netflix's "The Witcher".

Warner Bros. apparently approved Cavill's declaration that he would reprise his role as Superman before Gunn and Safran took over at DC Studios on November 1. Cavill had recently stated in an interview that he was looking forward to portraying an “enormously joyful” Superman and that he was "very excited" about Gunn's hiring.

The "Black Superman" Movie

According to sources, Gunn has been working on the new Superman plot for quite some time. The story will center on the character's existence as a young journalist in Metropolis. Sources claim that audiences will see him interact with significant personalities, such as his colleague Lois Lane. According to Variety, the new Gunn movie will not eclipse the previously announced J.J. Abrams-Ta-Nehisi Coates Superman film (which is still in active development).

Possible Future of The DC Universe

Cavill isn't the only former DC superhero to meet with Gunn and Safran. Ben Affleck, who has played Batman in a number of DC films, recently met with the duo to discuss the possibility of directing a future DC film.

Patty Jenkins made headlines recently when she was fired as director of the forthcoming 'Wonder Woman' film.

More information on the reimagined DC Universe is due in January, according to Gunn.

Will Henry Cavill reprise his Character as Geralt of Rivia in Season 4 of "The Witcher"?

Many assume that Henry Cavill stepped down from his other fan-favorite role as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher Season 4 in order to make time for Superman. It was reported in October, around the time of Cavill's Superman comeback, that Liam Hemsworth would be replacing Henry and that Season 3 would be the actor's final season with White Wolf. The Witcher fans were divided by the recasting! Now that Henry Cavill is no longer playing Superman, his calendar is open, so may the actor reprise his role as Geralt in The Witcher Season 4? Fans certainly believe so!
