Heart-Wrenching Moments in Grey's Anatomy

Part 1

Grey's Anatomy is one of the longest running shows in existence with 16 seasons and running. I recently, started re-watching the show because it will keep me occupied during this pandemic and also I can write many articles on the heart-wrenching moments. I think that Grey's Anatomy is one of the best dramas to binge over and over again, maybe it is because of the cases that come into Seattle Grace Hospital or maybe because of all the relationship drama between adults who do not have time? whatever the case is I love the show. Anyways, here are the heart-wrenching moments that got me so far in season 1 and 2.

1. Season 1 Episode 1: The very first moment that tugged my heart strings and made me tear-up a bit was when at the end of the first episode (I believe) when Meredith goes to see her mother in the residential facility, her mother is trying to remember what she did as a living and then she looks at Meredith and asks her who she was and what her name was and Meredith responds with "it's me mom, your daughter Meredith" and that broke my heart a little bit. It's hard when someone you love has Alzheimer's and can't remember who you are and you have to constantly remind them. It can also be a very challenging role to play as an actor/actress especially if the actor/actress had an experience with Alzheimer's.

2. Season 1 Episode 4: When there was a nurse in the hospital that worked with Ellis Grey (Meredith's mother) and she was in the hospital. For the first time Meredith talks about her mother to this nurse, and she admits the truth through a tragic irony that made Meredith laugh a little bit. The nurse says "Your mother remembers well" which made her laugh and then she explains why she thought for a moment it was funny that her mother had a good memory, because now she has Alzheimer's and is living in a home.

3. Season 1 episode 6: Alex Karev is not the nicest person in the first few seasons. There was a patient with a large tumor that was a little disgusting to look at. Alex thinking he was not heard by the patient says " how can she live with herself". She hears the entirety of the conversation between Alex and the imaging fellow. Feeling bad, he tries to make it up to her. The Or was running low on blood so he sprints out of the room and grabs the blood from the nurse and sprints back only to find out it was too late. Dr. Preston Burke had already called out her time of death and we see Alex standing there with two blood bags in his hand.

4. Season 1 Episode 4: When Cristina tries to resuscitate the nurse even though she was DNR which means do not resuscitate, she wanted her to keep living and we see her doing chest compression and despite Dr. Burke yelling at her to stop, she still continues to do so, until he holds her down and they let her die like she wanted to without resuscitation.

5. Season 2 Episode 2: The hospital received three car crash victims, a son, mother and a father. The father is an abusive drunk and he has hit his wife multiple times and left heavy bruising all over her body. Alex starts to talk to the son in the elevator about the guy who swallowed doll heads for fun to get the son to stop thinking about his abusive father. That's not where the moment stops. Izzy is then trying to convince the son to donate part of his liver to his father and Alex drags her outside and says "You don't know what's going through that kid's head, you don't know" and suddenly the audience now learns more about Alex's past and understand him a little bit more.

6. Season 2 Episode 3: When Ellis Grey is admitted into the hospital, Meredith is transfixed by the sight of her mother shouting "amateurs" through the halls, she immediately disappears behind the wall and watches her from the corner of her eye. "How many times have I told you not to show up when I'm working" would have been hard for anyone to hear, but it might be harder if you and your mother were distant and never really spoke.

7. Season 2, episode 4: When Cristina faints in the OR, everyone becomes alarmed that it is very serious until they learn that it is much more serious than anticipated. Cristina bleeds out and loses her pregnancy, she starts to cry and then Dr. Burke comes into her room at the end of his shift and her mother says "She does not like to be touched," and Burke puts down his bag on the chair and climbs into the bed with her and holds her saying "it's okay, it is going to be okay," and then he holds her until she feels better. It showed the humanity side of Dr. Burke.

9. Season 2 episode 5: The ritual. There was a patient who needed a ritual to find her soul and it was a beautiful thing to see as a viewer. The shaman starts to burn what I can imagine to be incense, and then we see a scene between Richard and Ellis and they reminisce of what it was like to be a couple and then Derek makes eye contact with his ex-wife to be...which lead us to Meredith confessing her love to Derek in an embarrassing yet very real way. She says choose me, pick me and she makes plans to meet Derek there.

10. Season 2 Episode 9: A patient who had been in a coma for nearly 17 years finally wakes up. He was expecting that it only had been a year or a few months, when he learns the reality it terrifies him. Quickly, he learns that his wife had remarried, his son has grown up and he lost everything after waking up. The reality of the incident is not a happy one. Imagine if you woke up one day and you've learned that everyone had moved on without you; that is a scary thing to think about. Unfortunately, the patient had a fall when he woke up, which caused him to go into surgery, but this time he did not wake up.
