When it comes to cultural differences, different cultures have different expressions of the same thing, which is supposed to be an objective phenomenon, and we will eventually gain something by doing comparative studies through such phenomena. However, very often, when a group of people talks about cultural differences, they ignore the objective phenomenon to pursue a paranoid result, and the result of paranoia is to revere a certain culture and consider it as the truth while using various words to deride the different cultures. The result is that cultural differences are ignored or even eliminated, and the culture left behind is necessarily flawless. Not really.

The film we recommend to you today is about just that, a disaster crisis caused by cultural differences, through which we can also feel that cultural differences are a universal problem. This film is "The North Sea".

Some people say, "The North Sea" is not a disaster film. A disaster film like this should be a topic that people all over the world need to face, so how can it be an example of cultural differences? Let's compare this film and finally see if the values presented in this disaster film are an objective phenomenon, not common to all human beings.

North Sea" is about an accident on an oil rig in the Norwegian sea, which leads to a disaster in which hundreds of rigs, large and small, are located on the entire sea level. A female technician who had already discovered the problem with the rig reported the situation, but because of the time constraint, her boyfriend was trapped in the rig because he was in the rescue team. In the nick of time, the owner of the rig, Crude Oil, is unwilling to expend too much energy to save one person, so the female technician stages an amazing rescue.

This is a straightforward story, and even this story does not make much sense to many people, because there are no big twists and turns throughout, and there are not many highlights to follow, and the outcome is a happy one, but it loses its meaning because there are no twists and turns that surprise the audience too much. But these summaries all boil down to the kernel of the main idea of the film, the female technician successfully rescued her boyfriend in the end. From this end, we can naturally see the desire for life under the Western value system, and the worship of this survival instinct. However, another angle of the story is the collision of completely different values between the East and the West.

The core of the difference between the Eastern and Western perspectives lies in saving lives and the price paid for saving lives and the people who receive praise after saving lives. Smooth out this point, we can see this difference in culture, the essence of the diversity of civilization in which different points.

The female technician is not alone to save people, she also has a partner, and this partner in the rescue of the last critical moment sacrificed, for the female technician and the female technician's boyfriend, this partner sacrificed himself to make others whole. This is a noble spirit, and in Eastern culture, this spirit of sacrificing oneself to save others is worth promoting, because it can drive more people to make choices in critical moments, and also can play a role in the daily social system to stabilize social life. In Western civilization, however, such sacrifice is not praiseworthy.

The female technician and her boyfriend are finally rescued, and what we see at the end of the film is the surprise and joy of the people for this kind of survival, no one cares whether the person who sacrificed himself in this rescue should also be praised for the spirit of self-sacrifice. No one wants to think that he also gave his efforts to save the two people who survived at the critical moment. Everyone appreciates and promotes the spirit of survival shown by the female technician and her boyfriend. The reason is to let people in a desperate situation show their strong will to survive, even if this will to survive is based on the level of sacrifice of others.

However, if everyone thinks this way, then who can survive? If the sacrificed colleague is also extremely eager to survive the disaster, then he will still follow the female technician to rescue others. He will still be in a life-and-death situation to save others? The answer is naturally not, because even if the rescue of others, no one cares, because people care about the people who have survived the death, as for those who have died, is not important.

However, in the Easterculturalre system, giving oneself up to save others is praised, and those who give themselves up to save others receive praise that is higher than those who survived. They are the saved, not the rescuer. Eastern cultures do not give credit to such groups beyond themselves as Western cultures do. Therefore, this cultural difference can be fully presented through this film.

Of course, every inherent value system has its strengths and weaknesses, and we have to face these strengths and weaknesses to finally usher in cultural tolerance, while it is inappropriate to simply belittle one side and exalt the other. Diverse cultures constitute a variety of ways of life, each country or region only needs to choose its way of life to obtain its own development path, which is the essence of life and the essence of human survival. If we put aside such objective laws and talk about differences and advantages and disadvantages, it is not objective, and an unobjective discussion will not lead to an objective conclusion. Therefore, when we look at cultural differences, comparative studies are a good way to go, and the last thing we need is authority and definitive conclusions.
