He Drove Her Home After a Six-Hour Audition. Then He Stayed for Tea With Her Mom.
Kat Dennings went to sleep. Tom Hardy sat in the kitchen. The internet turned the rest into noise.

The audition room had no windows. The air conditioning sounded like someone tearing paper in the next room. Six hours. George Miller had them do exercises. No talking. Eyes only. Tom Hardy stood across from her in a gray T-shirt with pilled cuffs. He made a gesture. She didn't understand it. He did it again. The director didn't call cut. Sweat sat at Hardy's temple. Dennings thought, if an earthquake happens now, do we run or finish the scene. Then she thought, no earthquake. Los Angeles doesn't earthquake. She kept acting.
Later, she had no car. Hardy said, I'll drive you. She gave him the address. The car smelled like leather and wet wipes. He drove slowly. At a red light, he checked the rearview mirror. She looked out the window. No one spoke. They arrived. Her mother opened the door. Hardy said, Hello, I'm Tom. Her mother said, Come in for tea. He said, All right. Dennings said, I'm going to lie down for a bit. She went into the bedroom. The door didn't close all the way. She heard her mother ask, What have you acted in. Hardy said, Television. Her mother asked, Which television. He named a few shows. Her mother said, Oh. I haven't seen them. He said, That's all right. Her mother asked, English tea or American tea. He said, Either. Her mother smiled. She said, English tea, then. Hardy said, Good.
Dennings slept. She dreamed she was in the audition, but she had forgotten every line. She woke up. The light had gone dark. She came out. Hardy was still there. He sat at the kitchen table with a cup in his hand. Her mother was smiling. On the table was a plate of biscuits. Two were missing. Hardy said, You're up. She said, Yeah. He said, The tea's cold. I'll make you another. She said, No. He said, All right. Then he stood and said, I should go. Her mother walked him to the door and said, Come again. He said, All right. The door closed. Her mother turned around and said, He drinks tea slowly. Dennings said, Yeah. Her mother said, He asked what you were like as a child. Dennings said, What did you say. Her mother said, I said you didn't talk much. Dennings said, Still don't. Her mother said, Still don't.
Dennings did not get the role. Charlize Theron played Furiosa. Dennings said the day made her a Hardy fan for life. Her mother still brings him up. When she does, she says, The Englishman. He drinks tea slowly.
On Reddit, someone posted the story. The title was long. Nine thousand upvotes. The comments went like this. First: Good man. Second: He was far from home. He missed tea with mum. Third: "Tea." Quote marks. Fourth: Hey mum, what did you and Tom Hardy do for hours? Oh, we just had tea. He's such a gentleman. Fifth: Maybe he said no to the mum. Sixth: Maybe he didn't. Seventh: Jack Nicholson nodding gif, but the face is Venom. Eighth: Gentle reminder that Jack Nicholson is a piece of shit. Ninth: What did he do? Tenth: Smashed a car, beatings, settlement. Eleventh: I wish Jack Nicholson would smash my car so I could get 500k. Twelfth: If he can shell out 500k for smashing a car, he could probably just pay her the 1k. Thirteenth: Gentle reminder that Mark Wahlberg is a piece of shit. Fourteenth: What did he do? Fifteenth: Outside of beating up the Vietnamese man as a teenager? Sixteenth: Gentle reminder that Venom is a psychopathic murderer. Seventeenth: My mum hosted a service member once. Twenty-three. He hadn't seen his family in three years. He asked for a hug. She gave him the longest hug he wanted. Eighteenth: No matter how old you are, sometimes you just need a mum. Nineteenth: I need to google Kat Dennings' mum. Twentieth: Is she also blessed? Twenty-first: I've reported you to the police. Twenty-second: They're horny, too. Twenty-third: Andrew WK would like a word. Twenty-fourth: Maybe it's a paternal gene. Twenty-fifth: Paternal Titties would make an excellent band name. Twenty-sixth: Probably chatting about all the English dramas he starred in. My mum claims she discovered him. Twenty-seventh: Wasn't he Peaky Blinders and Taboo? Twenty-eighth: Mad Max: Fury Road was filmed before Peaky Blinders. Twenty-ninth: My mum claims she discovered him. Only if she's a Trekkie. Thirtieth: He gave me the D. The tea? No. The D. That's great you guys enjoyed some tea.
Each comment picked one detail and treated it as the whole story. Someone picked tea. Someone picked sex. Someone picked Jack Nicholson. Someone picked mum. Someone picked a soldier's hug. Someone picked Peaky Blinders. None of them mentioned the kitchen. That afternoon in Los Angeles, a plate of biscuits, a cold cup of tea. Hardy sat there, listening to a mother. Dennings slept in the next room. She woke up. He was still there. He did not explain why. She did not ask. He left. A tea stain stayed at the bottom of the cup.
Dennings did not wash the cup. She left it in the sink. The next day, her mother washed it. The cup went back in the cabinet. Label facing out.
