Happy Endings Crew

Netflix had recently gotten rid of one of my favorite shows to binge watch, which is New Girl. I enjoyed the awkward moments, the cartoon-ish characters, the humor behind each event that occurred on each episode. Since Netflix got rid of the show, I needed something else to fill that hole in my heart. Enter Happy Endings, it also used to be on Netflix, but it was a while ago. Amazon prime had then taken the show under its wing. Now, I started watching the show. In the first episode, the character Alex leaves Dave at the alter, and the first few episodes they are trying to learn how to live in harmony in their friend group. They all share the same friends, so they need to learn how to co-exist as friends without inserting their drama. Dave has trouble getting used to living with Max, the non-flamboyant gay friend who does not have a working shower. Alex's sister and her husband (who played as Coach on New Girl) are trying hard to find a couple to hang out with. Penny the girl who is a bubbly personality is trying to find the love of her life, but somehow is out of luck when it comes down to it. All of these characters are fun to watch. In the second episode Dave is trying to move on by having a one night stand, but he has trouble blowing her off, so he keeps making plans with her. Dave in my opinion is somewhat of a realistic character, because after being in a relationship with Alex for so long, he forgets how to be out there and how to "have the conversation." Meanwhile Alex needs a new roommate, and her sister Jane wants to help her out. However, Alex has been known to not make the best decisions when it comes down to making new friends, she just has a knack for making friends that are a bad influences, or are into weird stuff. Alex being the youngest sibling tends to be an artistic person who usually sees the good in people, and somehow always misses the bad. Honestly, I find her to be relatable, because of her "no worries" attitude and her carefree life. Somehow she was the bad guy in the first episode, but you learn to love the character. Alex's outfits are always really cute—hands together for the costume designer which is Keri Smith. I am always jealous of Alex's clothes. They are so everyday, but super cute.

However, the show did not go on for very long from 2011 to 2013, and then it finished. Coming to an ending point of a show that I personally did not want to end. 92 percent of viewers liked the show, which is a fair bit amount of audience. Rotten tomatoes gave the show a more than average 78 percent, and here's why...

  1. The situations are unbelievable, which to be fair none of the ridiculous episodes have ever happened to me in real life, but that's part of the reason I like it. It's because the silly events that could never happen to anyone, happen. For example, Penny was dating that hipster guy for a while, and then she tried to change how she looked and acted to fit into a posse she hated to begin with, most likely not going to happen. Still it was funny.
  2. "A little more improv energy can enliven the show," as one critic stated, which I can kind of see how they mean. It is a very constructed show, but I think they just wanted to stick to the script, so nothing goes amiss. Every show has improv parts that happen because someone forgot their lines or simply messed them up a little bit, but I prefer the constructed show plot lines.

That's all that rotten tomatoes could come up with. Rolling stones wrote that it is one of the most underrated shows; that it is one of the funniest shows to watch. Penny is the glue that holds the group together, without her they would not hang out. She is also one of the best characters on television; she is single because of the choices she makes when it comes to choosing a boyfriend. I feel like we all have a friend who just keeps going for the wrong guy.

Max is an iconic character, because we sometimes stereotype gay men as the pastel-wearing high-voice-speaking men, but Max is just himself and I love him for that. He does not put on a show for anyone; he is real. Max makes the best observations in the group as well. In all of TV history I think that Max is one of the best gay characters out there.

Jane and Brad are the opposites that attract. Jane is a big control freak and huge type A personality, and she tends to take over things that she really has no business in being. Then, there is Brad who is funny and quick-witted, who is all corporate. Together however, they make a power couple. They are the example of opposites that work. I mean look at Dave and Alex, they seem like the perfect couple, but then Alex left Dave at the alter, and there was not even another guy, she just did not want to marry him.

I love watching Happy Endings; it's unfortunate that it had to come to an end after three seasons.
