On My Block - Netflix Original

On My Block is a 2018-current Netflix Series. The show mainly focuses on friendship, family, money, and the gang lifestyle. Being one of the funniest shows on Netflix, the characters Jamal (far left) is the adventurous comedian of the group. Monse (middle left) is more stubborn and hardheaded but she has a soft side for the people she cares about. Ruby (middle right) is the one with the brains, he values his family & is very flirtatious. Lastly, Caesar (far right) is all about family as well and focuses on where to find his place in life. The first season is about them surviving high school, searching for hidden money in the town, and trying to get Caesar out of his family gang. They go through many adventures, have countless arguments, but always come back together in the end. The second season is about getting through hardships/past traumatic events, sacrifice, and true friendship. There are many shifts in the second season such as growth in their individual maturity, making new friendships, and relying on one another. This show is filled with hilarious side comments, serious family moments, and hard decisions. To describe Caesar’s situation more in-depth, Caesar was born into a gang and his older brother “Spooky” is influencing him to join (not like he had a choice anyway). Caesar ends up getting caught tagging, running away from other gangs, running away from cops & putting himself in possibly fatal situations all while attending 9th grade. At times, Spooky has to help Caesar out of sticky situations, which is not recommended because he is the most intimidating character I’ve ever seen. Caesar has to find a way out of the gang-banging lifestyle, and one day, his actions affect the ones he loves. There is some romance in this show between Caesar & Monse; however, they try to keep it a secret as much as possible so they don’t split up their friend group. Through trials, wacky situations, and everyday life, these four stick together through thick and thin and never give up on each other. Now, I will describe the first two seasons. In the first season, the four are starting their first year of high school. As they adjust to the new norm, going to parties, making new friends, they still have trials going on at home. Ruby’s cousin moves in from Mexico and he has to give up his room. Monse’s dad works overtime and she barely sees him, thus having to protect herself in a bad neighborhood. Jamal is having trouble standing up to his parents and ends up getting stuck in a situation. Caesar is learning to live in his new lifestyle with his fellow gang members. Since they're all opinionated teenagers, they tend to get in occasional arguments about anything and everything. While Caesar and Monse try to keep their relationship a secret, Jamal and Ruby try to find ways to get Caesar out of the gang. Ruby’s cousin Olivia joins their friend group & things start to get messy. Meanwhile, Jamal is trying to find a bag of hidden money in the town and he goes great lengths to find it. The drama rises up until the last episode, but when you think everything is resolved, boom - cliffhanger. The second season is more about forgiveness, healing, trust. Friendships are torn & they have to learn to rebuild them. Ruby has to heal from past experiences, while Jamal is still thinking about the hidden money. Monse made some transitions in her life & Caesar is still caught up in his family gang. Season 3 was released a few months ago but I have not watched it yet. I 100% recommended watching this show because it ties you in & you can’t get enough.
