Review Summary

Freaks and Geeks is probably forgotten by the most people nowadays, but this TV series is getting more popular again and I can see why. A lot of films and TV series about teenagers usually are too unrealistic or they are just not reaching and discussing the topics that we in real life have said or done. It's not the case with Freaks and Geeks. It's smartly written and almost everyone will see something familiar from our own lives. If that's what we have talked about with friends or parents.

If we are looking at TV series about teenagers, we can find many examples: 13 Reasons Why, Gossip Girl, etc. You might be asking, what is so different with Freaks and Geeks? It's not overdramatic and talks about things that teenagers actually talk about. The story is well planned and is effectively mixing comedy and drama genres, just like in real life and that's what I appreciate the most about it—realism. People, emotions, things that happen are realistic, and that's what makes it so special.

There are many well-crafted details that are filling the story and that makes it more recognizable that the main characters don't like to be in their age. They want to be free, although they are not absolutely sure what this "freedom" actually is. Is it world without parents and teachers or is it something else that bothers them? Most of the time it appears that it is something absolutely different that you were expecting. Some even want to be and stay the same as they were if that's because they were without any responsibilities, or just because memories are too good to change something.

The school takes a big role in youngsters life and it doesn't matter if you are a "freak" or a "geek." You will not be able to find "a bad guy" character here because everyone has a reason why he/she is doing it. After all, we all are people with interests, friends, and talents. Although there are many different characters, they are built successfully and you probably won't find a scene where you get bored. The reason why these characters work so effective is that we can find little similarities between them and ourselves. That's what makes us care about them and it's much easier to understand their choices, although sometimes that might not work as you want.

Nonetheless, they show us these things not only from children's but parents' perspective as well, that makes it more interesting to watch for grown ups or young adults and maybe children could start to understand why their parents react as they do. Yes, they can get on your nerves sometimes, but remember—they do it because of you and they are people, the same as all of us.

However, it's made in 1999–2000 and sometimes it feels that it's getting a bit old, but it still doesn't lose our attention. These TV series won Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Casting for a comedy series to which I absolutely agree. It includes nowadays well-known movie stars, such as James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, and many others, although the acting isn't always at the highest level, in this case, it doesn't bother me at all. They are doing the best they can and that's noticeable.

I absolutely enjoyed watching every single episode and I'm still a bit disappointed that it was canceled right after the first season but it is absolutely worth to watch. Mostly truthful comedy/drama, that might be one of the best TV series about teenagers.

I give Freaks and Geeks 81%
