Favorite Things I Love About 1987

Highlighting my favorite pop culture events from my birth year

By Mark Wesley Pritchard Published 4 months ago • 3 min read

Nostalgia is a big deal to us and we always long to go back to the days when life was much happier. Plus, life was much calmer and as many people would say, "We used to be a proper country." I'm not sure what they meant by that, but I wish there was a time machine that allow us to travel to any decade. In this story, I'll highlight some of my favorite pop culture events from my birth year. Let me know in the comments what your favorite pop culture event from the year that you were born. The year that's the focus of this story is 1987, which happens to be my birth year. I was born on November 13 of that year and interestingly enough, I was introduced to this world on a Friday. I guess you can call me a Friday The 13th baby. Not in a Jason Vorhees kind of way. The start of 1988 was a little over a month away. I'm a nostalgic freak, so I'm always hooked on everything about it. Here are some of my favorite things that I love about 1987.

Who's Bad?

One thing you probably didn't know about me is that I'm a huge fan of Michael Jackson. Nearly 20 years after his death, I still play his songs and sing along to them. Known as The King of Pop, everyone still loves him, while others try to ruin his legacy by making false claims about someone who can't defend himself. Bad was the seventh studio album that was released on August 31, 1987. It produced nine singles such as Smooth Criminal, Dirty Diana, and the title track. It was the third and final album he collaborated with the late Quincy Jones. The album sold over 65 million copies and was certified 11 times platinum.

The Best Movies of 1987

I'm a movie buff and I prefer watching those that were released in the 1980s. 1987 had some of the best movies that are now timeless classics. Titles such as Full Metal Jacket, Robocop, and Predator are still popular with audiences decades later. As for the latter movie, I've seen it at least three times. I wish going to a movie theater wasn't seen as a luxury today and don't get me started with the ridiculous prices of snacks, thanks to inflation. The average price of a movie ticket in 1987 was $3.81, when adjusted for inflation, is $8.37 today. Snacks were way cheaper back then. For example, a tub of popcorn in 1987 was between $1.25 to $1.75, and a 12-ounce Coke was between $0.50 to $0.75. Today, far less people are going to movie theaters due to the rising prices.

First Time World Series Champions

A couple of weeks before I was born, the Minnesota Twins won their first World Series title on the evening of October 25, 1987. They defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 7 by a score of 4-2. Pitcher Frank Viola was named World Series MVP. They would win another championship four years later. In one of my previous stories, I stated that baseball was way more exciting in the 8os than today's game. I didn't become a fan of baseball until nearly 15 years later. If you haven't watched a World Series game, I would start by watching highlights and if you do rewatch every game of a Fall Classic from any year, you'll end up enjoying watching October baseball.

Toys, Toys, Toys!

For the final entry on this list, shown above are a couple of pages from a 1987 Toys R Us catalog. I've been playing video games for nearly 40 years and the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was the first game console I've played. This was back in 1989 and I'm still a fan of retro games. Toys R Us was part of my childhood and when I went to one near me decades later, it was reliving old memories again. Sadly, in 2018, the Toys R Us in my area closed its doors. I recorded a video of me waving goodbye to the place where I mostly bought Power Rangers action figures and other toys. Kids and this generation will never know how much we loved Toys R Us growing up. At least they'll always have the ads and commercials to view.
