Ep. 2 + 3

The hatred for John Walker grows in episode 2 and I think it boils down to one thing, everything we know about him points to him being a good soldier, including the fact that he was dubbed Captain America by the US government but nothing we know about him even gives us the illusion that he is a good man. The whole tagline for what makes Captain America relatable, loveable and a hero is that he wasn’t a perfect soldier but a good man and John Walker spits in the face of everything that Steve stood for and that's why him being in possession of the shield simply feels wrong.

We also got quite a lot of social commentary in this episode I’d say firstly with the existence of Isiah, a black super soldier that no one but Bucky seemed to know about. It was made pretty clear that the US government used and abused him, and swept him under the rug Bucky’s discretion about his existence was to save him from more interference and hardship. Immediately after the scene where we find out about Isiah, Sam was confronted with the harsh reality many black americans face in the form of a racial profiling. Cops come up to Sam and Bucky’s argument asking for Sam’s ID and asking Bucky if Sam was bothering him, Bucky then turns into that white friend assertively asking the cops if they know who Sam is, they only back off when they realize that he's an Avenger.

With this episode also comes emotional revelations, Sam alluding to Bucky that he didn’t feel that he deserved the shield and though he doesn’t say why, that blank has been filled in for me by some amazing TikTok creators. I highly suggest watching @straw_hat_goofy as he says it best. We also get an emotional breakthrough from Bucky who expresses that he's concerned that Steve was wrong about him, that he isn’t actually worth saving. Steve was the only one who really loved and cared about Bucky and he left and now Bucky really doesn’t have anyone.

The 3rd episode was a little more plot driven, and I kind of love how well balanced this show is between plot and character development. Bucky broke Zemo out of prison to help them track down information about the serum, they found the guy that made it, killed him and blew up his lab but beforehand found out that there were 20 vials of serum that were stolen. It's also been made clear that this is a different kind of serum, meant to be more subtle and undetectable and perhaps stronger. The flag smashers motives are also clear and they fall into what Marvel does best in the form of sympathetic and relatable villains but of course the lines between good and evil must be defined so the leader of the flag smashers, carli, has started taking a more violent approach to her cause.

We also got a beautiful introduction into Sharon Carter in episode 3, she can’t return to the states because of her involvement with helping Steve and Sam in Civil War and she seems to know more about the boys’ little problem then she’s let on. But most importantly she’s extremely badass and super hot.

Now for the emotional moments of this episode, Bucky keeps his Winter Soldier amends list in the same notebook Steve used to keep track of the things he needed to catch up on….so that's fine. Sam and Bucky were straight up yelling at each other during a firefight, they are slowly becoming more like siblings and I think we’re inching towards some common ground.

This show is so well balanced and delivered that I have no doubt by then end of it's run we will all be very impressed with the line that Marvel sets up for the future of both Bucky and Sam.
