Even the Vampire Queen Battles Insecurity

An Adventure Time Article

Insecurity has plagued every single one of us in some shape or form. Sometimes it's because we beat ourselves up and at other times, it's because of external forces; i.e: people we may know or hardly know, a video on YouTube that attacks several habits or traits you may have and so forth. We find our solace through various mediums and a highly popular one is television, more specifically television shows such as the popular Adventure Time. Let's dig a bit deeper here and extract the beloved Marceline Abadeer and see through her point of a view, yes?

As an avid Roleplayer, I like to personally venture into the very core of characters I roleplay as and Marceline just happened to have my hooks sunk into her one day. In the beginning, Marceline has this wild personality and an indestructible guard over her heart to keep intruders out. She is known for being hardly intimidated and is very mischievous, this proven by how she performs "evil plans" on some of our fellow beloved characters, primarily Jake the Dog who has a fear of vampires.

At first, I had no clue how Marceline truly felt until she expressed herself through her music. With songs like "I'm Just Your Problem," "Little Girl," and the "Fry Song", we've learned that Marceline has yearned for the approval and acceptance of not only her father but our beloved Princess Bubblegum as well. In the episode "Marceline's Closet," we see our misunderstood Vampire Queen crying after she reads the lyrics to the song "Remember You," a song that was written for her by the Ice King.

Everyone has encountered almost every version of the emotional vampire queen throughout Ooo, so they know how temperamental Marceline can be. In the episode "It Came from the Nightosphere," a violet outburst escaped her and later in "Evicted!" Mareline states that she lost her moral code. We all know that isn't true though, for the Vampire Queen has shown —in her own way—compassion.

Once again, we see that Marceline has insecurity issues when she tells the story of the "villain" Marshall Lee. Arguably, Marshall is considered to be the more evil of the two, simply because of how graphic his dialogue is. Like Marceline, Marshall can eat the color red as shown in canon artwork... but in "Bad Little Boy," Marshall mentions "drinking the red from your heart in one sitting" along with how he "kills people every night."

Just this alone apparently proves how darker Marshall is compared to Marceline. Though both lines could easily be taken as the vampire king exaggerating. He is rowdier than Marceline and has no qualms about endangering others with his violent but "friendly" rough-housing. This is another illustration of how Marceline sees herself and clearly, it's not a pretty picture. Like all beings, not even Marcy can escape the disease that is insecurity. Well, when you're a half breed offspring by the chaotic evil that is Father Abadeer, it's pretty hard to think that you're a glossy, puking rainbows good guy.

Marceline Abadeer is a character that people can relate to. We love her because she's not some cookie cutter, cliché heroine who is perfect all year round. She is someone with issues, someone we root for to overcome obstacles we often wish we could overcome ourselves. Seeing her friendship blossom with the other characters gives people such as myself a flicker of hope that goodness and love can mend emotional and physical damage in time.
