The Elden Ring live-action film just got a whole lot more exciting. A24's adaptation of Bandai Namco Entertainment's video game Elden Ring, its most ambitious feature movie project to date, has rounded out its cast as it begins production.

Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz have been added to the call sheet, which already includes Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, and Cailee Spaeny. Nick Offerman is also in the cast. That is a seriously deep lineup.

If you're interested reading this type of topics must visit:

Alex Garland, who wrote and directed Civil War, wrote the script and is directing the production, which gets underway this week in the U.K. Principal photography began in April 2026 on location in the United Kingdom, including Scotland. Filming of scenes in Iceland is set to take place in summer.

Sources say the budget is well over $100 million and will be around 100 days of principal photography. That makes it A24's most expensive and ambitious feature project yet.

The film will be shot in IMAX. Elden Ring is scheduled to be released in the United States by A24 on March 3, 2028.

As for the story, the plot of the game takes place in a mythical realm known as the Lands Between, revolving around the Elden Ring, a powerful artifact that has been shattered, plunging the Lands Between into war and chaos. The player is tasked with restoring the Elden Ring. Character details for the film were not revealed.

The casting choices themselves are worth noting. Mizuno made an impression with her appearance in Garland's feature directorial debut, Ex Machina, and is one of the stars of HBO's House of the Dragon. Her reunion with Garland feels very intentional. Jonathan Pryce, known for The Two Popes and The Crown, and Nick Offerman, fresh off The Last of Us, are also among the key additions.

Peter Rice is producing the film alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, with George R.R. Martin and Vince Gerardis also credited as producers. Martin, of course, co-created the Elden Ring world alongside FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki, so his involvement on the production side makes sense.

The game itself remains a cultural juggernaut. Since its release in 2022, it has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and received over 400 Game of the Year awards, per Bandai Namco.

A Personal Take

I’m genuinely curious to see how this turns out. Elden Ring isn't a traditional story. It’s an experience built on atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and a sense of overwhelming scale. That’s a hard thing to capture in a linear movie. But if anyone can do it, it’s Alex Garland. He’s great at building tension and making worlds feel lived-in and strange.

The cast is the most encouraging part. It’s not just a bunch of Marvel actors. Burke and Mizuno are great at playing characters with a bit of mystery. That fits the vibe of the Tarnished perfectly. Using IMAX also shows they understand that the scenery is just as much a character as the people are. It’s a huge risk for A24, but it’s the kind of risk that could redefine what a video game movie can be.

The transition from a silent protagonist in a game to a lead character in a film is always the biggest hurdle. Garland will need to find a way to make the protagonist's journey feel personal without losing the mystery that makes the game so compelling. If the script manages to balance the high-fantasy politics of the demigods with the lonely journey of the Tarnished, we could be looking at the next Lord of the Rings level event.

As the production continues to move through the misty landscapes of the U.K., the industry will be watching closely to see if A24 can translate the magic of the Lands Between into a cinematic masterpiece. With a director who understands atmosphere and a cast full of seasoned talent, the pieces are in place for something truly legendary. The journey to become Elden Lord is just beginning, and for fans of the franchise, the wait for 2028 has never felt longer.
