But by the time the movie reaches its final scenes, that question has completely changed. The real mystery is not simply where Kuriachan is hiding, but who has actually been controlling everything around him.

Directed by Dinjith Ayyathan and written by Bahul Ramesh, Eko builds its suspense around Kuriachan, a feared and mysterious dog breeder whose past has left behind enemies, secrets and people desperate to find him.

The film slowly reveals that the dogs surrounding Kuriachan’s isolated world are not just background elements. They are central to understanding the Eko ending, Mlaathi’s revenge and Kuriachan’s ultimate punishment.

What Is Eko About?

The story takes place around the remote hills of Kaattukunnu, where an elderly woman named Mlaathi Chedathi lives with several highly trained dogs.

Her husband, Kuriachan, has been missing for years.

Some people believe he is dead. Others are convinced he is still hiding somewhere in the surrounding forest.

Kuriachan was known as an extraordinary dog trainer, but his past was far from innocent. Over the years, he created several enemies, and different people eventually arrive in the hills looking for answers.

Living with Mlaathi is a young caretaker named Peeyoos.

At first, Peeyoos appears to be just another person caught in Kuriachan’s complicated world.

That assumption turns out to be completely wrong.

Who Is Mlaathi Chedathi Really?

One of the most important parts of Eko is Mlaathi’s past.

Before becoming Mlaathi Chedathi, she was Soyi, a woman living in Malaysia.

Kuriachan entered her life years earlier and eventually brought her to India. However, what appeared to be a new beginning was actually built on manipulation.

Soyi had previously been married to another man, and Kuriachan allowed her to believe that her husband was gone.

The truth about what happened was hidden from her.

For years, Kuriachan effectively controlled Soyi’s understanding of her own past.

When the full truth finally comes back to her, Mlaathi realizes that much of the life she had accepted was based on deception.

Why Are the Dogs So Important in Eko?

Throughout the movie, almost everyone assumes that the dogs belong psychologically as well as physically to Kuriachan.

After all, Kuriachan is the legendary trainer.

The animals seem unusually intelligent, organised and dangerous. Because Kuriachan is missing, people naturally assume that he must secretly be directing them from somewhere inside the forest.

The climax reveals something much more important.

The dogs are actually loyal to Mlaathi.

This changes the meaning of many earlier scenes.

Kuriachan believed that training animals meant controlling them. Mlaathi, however, developed a relationship with them based much more strongly on trust and care.

Eventually, the same animals associated with Kuriachan’s power become the force that takes his power away.

Who Is Peeyoos Really?

Another major Eko twist concerns Peeyoos.

The young caretaker is not really the innocent Peeyoos we believe him to be.

He is actually Manikandan, one of Kuriachan’s most loyal followers.

Manikandan has come to Mlaathi’s house because he is searching for his missing master.

His loyalty to Kuriachan is so extreme that the film creates an interesting parallel between him and the dogs.

Kuriachan spent his life training animals to obey him.

But Manikandan is perhaps his most successfully trained follower.

He follows Kuriachan with almost unquestioning devotion, even committing violent acts to protect him and eliminate threats.

So while Mlaathi controls a pack of real dogs through loyalty, Kuriachan has created a human follower who behaves with the same unquestioning obedience.

What Happened Between Kuriachan and Soyi?

To understand the Eko ending, Kuriachan’s relationship with Soyi is essential.

Kuriachan’s actions toward her were not simply romantic deception. They were about possession and control.

He manipulated the circumstances surrounding her former husband and eventually became the person Soyi depended on.

For a long time, she did not know the complete truth.

When she finally learns what Kuriachan had done, everything she believed about their relationship changes.

Kuriachan is no longer the man who rescued her.

He becomes the man who stole her freedom.

That realization explains why Mlaathi’s eventual revenge is not sudden or emotional.

Eko Ending Explained: Is Kuriachan Still Alive?

This is the biggest question left by the movie.

The ending strongly suggests that Kuriachan is still alive.

He had a secret place in the hills where he could hide whenever necessary. After trouble catches up with him, Kuriachan disappears into this hideout.

But this time, Mlaathi knows exactly where he has gone.

Instead of exposing his location or killing him directly, she turns his hiding place into a prison.

Her dogs patrol the area and prevent Kuriachan from escaping.

This is the cruel irony at the heart of the Eko climax.

Kuriachan spent years controlling animals and people.

Now he is the one being controlled.

The forest that once protected him has become his cage.

Why Doesn't Mlaathi Simply Kill Kuriachan?

Because death would end his suffering.

Mlaathi's punishment is far more calculated.

The movie suggests that Kuriachan receives enough food to remain alive while the dogs ensure that he cannot leave his hiding place.

One of the most important visual clues comes from Mlaathi watching the distant hills through binoculars.

She knows where he is.

She knows he is trapped.

And she is making sure his punishment continues.

Kuriachan therefore experiences a version of the helplessness that Soyi once experienced herself.

He is alive.

Freedom exists somewhere outside his prison.

But he cannot reach it.

The Meaning of the Food-Carrying Dogs

Earlier details involving the dogs become much more important after the final revelation.

The animals are capable of carrying food across difficult terrain.

By the climax, that detail suggests how Kuriachan could survive for such a long period without returning home.

Mlaathi does not need to physically visit him.

The dogs can maintain the prison.

They can prevent his escape while also delivering what he needs to remain alive.

This makes his punishment especially disturbing.

The animals Kuriachan once saw as tools of control have now become his guards.

What Happened to Mohan Pothan?

Mohan Pothan also comes looking for Kuriachan because of their troubled history.

At first, his death appears to reinforce the idea that Kuriachan must still be controlling his dogs from somewhere in the forest.

But after the final revelation, the scene takes on a different meaning.

It was Mlaathi who held real authority over the dogs.

Mohan's death therefore becomes another clue that the audience initially interprets incorrectly.

The film repeatedly encourages us to imagine Kuriachan as the invisible master controlling everything.

The truth is that the person quietly sitting inside the house has become far more powerful than the missing man everyone fears.

What Does Manikandan Discover in the Final Scene?

Near the end, Manikandan finally begins connecting the clues.

He understands that Mlaathi knows where Kuriachan is.

More importantly, he realizes that she has been controlling the dogs.

This places Manikandan in an impossible position.

His entire purpose is to find and protect Kuriachan.

Mlaathi is now standing between him and his master.

But he cannot simply attack her.

As soon as the threat becomes clear, her dogs surround him.

The power dynamic is settled immediately.

Manikandan may be dangerous, but inside Mlaathi's territory, he is not the dominant predator.

Why Doesn't Mlaathi Kill Manikandan?

The ending leaves Manikandan alive, which is another interesting choice.

He may be Kuriachan's loyal follower, but Mlaathi does not view him exactly the same way she views Kuriachan or Mohan.

There is also a practical reason she needs to keep him under control rather than immediately eliminate him.

Manikandan needs Mlaathi because she knows Kuriachan's location.

Mlaathi can also use Manikandan for things she cannot easily do herself outside the isolated house.

Neither side can completely remove the other.

That creates a strange new relationship based on suspicion, dependence and power.

The Real Meaning of Eko's Ending

The ending of Eko is ultimately about control changing hands.

Kuriachan spends much of his life believing he is the master.

He controls animals.

He manipulates people.

He shapes Soyi's life.

He creates devoted followers such as Manikandan.

But eventually, every form of control he created returns to him.

Mlaathi takes control of the dogs.

Manikandan's loyalty becomes useless because he cannot reach his master.

And Kuriachan's secret hiding place becomes the very thing that prevents anyone from saving him.

His punishment is therefore not random.

It is a reflection of the life he created.

Why the Title Eko Makes Sense

The title can also be understood as an echo of the past.

Events from Soyi's earlier life return years later in another form.

Control becomes imprisonment.

Protection becomes captivity.

The dogs that once represented restrictions eventually become the means through which Mlaathi creates her own rules.

Kuriachan's actions do not disappear simply because time passes.

They echo back.

And eventually, he becomes the victim of the same kind of control he once imposed on others.

Final Thoughts

Eko does not deliver its biggest twist through a dramatic confession or a conventional showdown.

Instead, its ending asks viewers to reconsider everything they have already seen.

Kuriachan was never the invisible master controlling the forest.

Mlaathi was.

Peeyoos was never simply a caretaker.

He was Manikandan, Kuriachan's loyal follower.

And Kuriachan was not necessarily dead or successfully hiding from his enemies.

The strongest interpretation of the climax is that Kuriachan is alive, trapped in his own secret hideout and kept there by Mlaathi and her dogs.

That reversal makes the ending so satisfying.

The man who believed everything around him could be trained, manipulated or possessed finally discovers that he is no longer the master.

He is the prisoner.
