Some love stories need years to develop. Others need only one unforgettable day.

Ek Din tells an emotional romantic story about Dinesh, a quiet and socially invisible office worker who secretly loves his colleague Meera. He never expects her to notice him, let alone spend an entire day with him. But an unexpected incident in Japan changes everything.

What makes the story unusual is that the most important day of Meera and Dinesh’s relationship is also the one day Meera cannot remember.

Here is the complete Ek Din movie story and ending explained.

Who Is Dinesh?

Dinesh Srivastava works for an IT company. He is extremely quiet, has almost no friends and jokingly considers himself an “invisible man” because people barely notice him.

He has accepted his lonely personality, but there is one person who makes him genuinely happy: Meera, a woman working in the same company.

Dinesh has liked Meera from the moment she joined the office, but he has never had the confidence to express his feelings.

He believes a woman like Meera deserves someone more confident and interesting than him.

One day, however, Meera approaches Dinesh because her printer is not working.

While fixing it, Dinesh notices her collection of Japanese dolls. Meera is surprised that he recognizes them. She explains that her father worked in the Merchant Navy and often travelled to Japan.

Because of his stories, visiting Japan has always been one of Meera’s biggest dreams.

She even has a long list of places she wants to visit there.

That short conversation becomes incredibly important to Dinesh because, for the first time, Meera has truly noticed him.

Meera and Kunal’s Relationship

Unfortunately for Dinesh, Meera is already in love with their boss, Kunal.

Kunal is married, but he has convinced Meera that his marriage is ending and that he will eventually divorce his wife and marry her.

Soon, Kunal announces a company trip to Japan.

Although the employees were originally supposed to receive a three-day holiday in Goa, Kunal changes the destination to Japan for five days.

His real reason is Meera.

He knows Japan is her dream destination.

Once they arrive, Kunal tells Meera that the other employees will return after three days while the two of them can stay for two additional days.

Meera initially hesitates because Kunal is still legally married.

Then everything falls apart.

Kunal’s Biggest Lie Is Exposed

Kunal’s wife Ritu unexpectedly arrives in Japan.

Meera discovers that Kunal never seriously discussed divorce with his wife.

Even worse, Ritu is four months pregnant.

Meera realizes that the relationship she believed had a future was built on lies.

Her heart is completely broken.

After the company trip ends, the employees begin returning home, but Meera remains in Japan.

Dinesh sees how emotionally devastated she is and decides to stay behind as well.

He does not want to interfere with her life. He simply wants to make sure she is safe.

That decision eventually saves her.

What Happened to Meera in the Snow?

One night, Meera becomes heavily intoxicated.

While wandering outside, she nearly walks in front of a car and eventually reaches a snowy forest area.

Dinesh follows her and desperately searches for her.

He finally finds Meera unconscious in the snow and takes her to the hospital.

When she wakes up the following morning, something is wrong.

Meera remembers her identity, her parents and her older memories, but she cannot remember recent events.

According to the movie, the doctor diagnoses her with Transient Global Amnesia (TGA).

The doctor explains that Meera has temporarily lost part of her recent memory. She cannot remember approximately the previous two years clearly, and whatever happens during this particular day will also disappear once she sleeps.

The next morning, her previous memories are expected to return.

But she will forget this one day.

And this is where Dinesh makes a huge mistake.

Why Does Dinesh Pretend to Be Kunal?

When Meera asks who he is, Dinesh tells her that his name is Kunal and that he is her boyfriend.

It is a lie.

Dinesh initially appears to be trying to protect Meera from immediately reliving the emotional trauma caused by the real Kunal.

Because her phone has also been damaged by snow, Meera cannot easily verify everything herself.

She remains suspicious.

Eventually, Dinesh suggests something clever: they should “break up” for one day and simply spend the day together as friends.

Meera agrees.

Dinesh then takes her around Japan, helping her complete the travel list she had dreamed about for years.

They visit the places she wanted to see, attend a snow festival and create happy memories together.

For Dinesh, it is almost like the wish he had once made has come true.

He had wanted Meera to be his, even if only for one day.

Does Meera Fall in Love With Dinesh?

Yes.

During their day together, Meera begins genuinely liking him.

She sees that he is caring, respectful and deeply concerned about her happiness.

Their connection becomes so strong that Meera eventually tries to kiss him.

That is the moment when Dinesh can no longer continue the lie.

He stops her.

He admits that his real name is Dinesh.

He tells her about the real Kunal, Kunal's marriage and Ritu's pregnancy.

Naturally, Meera feels betrayed and slaps him.

But after contacting Kunal herself, she realizes that Dinesh has been telling the truth about the affair.

Dinesh then explains everything that happened after her heartbreak, including how he found her unconscious and took her to the hospital.

Meera gradually understands that although Dinesh lied about his identity, he never took advantage of her vulnerable condition.

Why Does Meera Record a Video?

Meera knows that once she sleeps, she will forget the entire day she has spent with Dinesh.

She does not want that to happen.

So she records a video message for her future self.

In the video, she explains that Dinesh looked after her when she desperately needed someone and that he is a genuinely good person.

She even tells her future self to contact Dinesh and give him a place in her life.

It seems like the perfect solution.

But Dinesh makes another surprising decision.

Why Does Dinesh Delete Meera’s Video?

Before leaving, Dinesh deletes Meera's video from her phone.

Why?

Because he does not want Meera to choose him simply because her past self instructed her to do so.

He wants her feelings to be real.

Dinesh believes that if Meera wakes up without remembering their magical day, she may never look at him with the same love again.

So he walks away.

When Meera wakes on February 13, she remembers her breakup with Kunal but remembers nothing about February 12.

Still, something feels missing.

She cannot explain it, but emotionally she feels as though she has left someone important behind.

How Does Meera Discover Dinesh?

After returning to India, Meera resigns from the company and tells Kunal never to contact her again.

She then begins investigating her mysterious missing day.

She notices that every destination on her Japan travel list has been completed.

She finds photographs and videos from places she cannot remember visiting.

Her missing Japanese doll has also somehow been found.

Most importantly, one video appears to contain a glimpse of an unidentified man who had apparently been with her.

Meera contacts the doctor in Japan.

The doctor confirms that Meera had temporary memory loss and tells her that a tall man wearing glasses stayed with her and took care of her.

Meanwhile, Dinesh is devastated.

After speaking with his mother, however, he realizes something important.

If Meera could genuinely like him after spending only one day with him, why should he assume she could never like him again?

He decides to stop underestimating himself.

Ek Din Ending Explained

Dinesh finally approaches Meera again.

He does not immediately tell her about their lost day.

Instead, he reminds her that they previously worked in the same office and that he once fixed her printer.

Then he finally says what he had been too afraid to say from the beginning:

He likes her.

And he asks her out for coffee.

Meera agrees.

Something about Dinesh already feels familiar to her even though she cannot explain why.

During their meeting, however, she starts connecting the clues.

She asks whether Dinesh went to Japan.

He says yes.

She asks about his glasses.

Again, his answers match the description given by the doctor.

Finally, Meera shows him the Japanese doll.

She realizes the truth:

Dinesh was the mysterious man who spent February 12 with her.

She asks why he never told her.

Dinesh eventually recovers the deleted video from the phone's recycle bin and shows it to her.

Meera watches her own forgotten self describing how kind Dinesh had been and how deeply she had connected with him.

Everything finally makes sense.

The sadness she felt after leaving Japan was not because of Kunal.

It was because, somewhere beyond her conscious memory, she was missing Dinesh.

What Does the Ending of Ek Din Mean?

The ending reinforces the movie’s central idea: sometimes one genuine opportunity is enough to change two lives.

Dinesh spends most of the story believing he is invisible and undeserving of Meera.

But Meera falling for him during their single day together proves that his biggest obstacle was not his personality—it was his lack of confidence.

Deleting the video is also important.

Dinesh does not want to force Meera into loving him because of something she said while living through a day she can no longer remember.

Instead, he gives her the freedom to discover him again.

And she does.

Meera may lose the memory of February 12, but the emotional connection created during that day never completely disappears.

That is why Dinesh still feels familiar.

And that is ultimately why their story gets another chance.

Ek Din ends with Dinesh and Meera reunited, suggesting that real feelings can survive even when the memories connected to them disappear.
