This is my review for the BBC audio drama special 'Earthquake Girl'.

Edie is a normal girl, bookworm, introvert, & aspiring writer. She is under pressure from her sister-in-law, Lila, to get out more and find a boyfriend. However, Edie finds fulfillment in writing her novels and working at the local library. She enjoys her position here greatly, but has to tangle with her supervisor on dealing with one library goer who eats there.

The story goes back and forwards from Edie's home where she is writing her novel to working at the library. Between all this, Edie feels compelled from her family and workmates to do things that she feels isn't right for her. Her boss wants her to get rid of the old lady who eats in the library, while her sister-in-law pressures her to attend her gatherings instead of staying in writing her story and reading books. However, Edie finds an escape with her writing and creates characters for her narrative that she relates to. I won't reveal too much more as I want you to be able to experience it yourself.

'Earthquake Girl' is an hour long and is high-quality. The acting from the voice actors are pretty convincing as are the background noises. This is really important for an audio drama to work at creating visuals in your mind and your imagination. Now what about the characters? While Edie does keep to herself, she does care for other people. This is evident by how she is reluctant to throw the lady out of the library for eating. Also, she relates to a frequent library visitor who faints often and has dizzy spells. While Edie has the best intentions, she does let her temper get in the way. Edie's supervisor is strict and cares deeply for the library, but can be brass and demanding. With that, the characters are well-written. The story isn't fast-paced or too slow, but just right. I myself can relate to Edie, as I'm bookish, an introvert, and a writer as you can see! She feels at home at the library, surrounded by the books, each with a different experience and perspective.

For this audio drama I would give it a 8 out of 10. I enjoyed the serene setting of the library and the theme of Edie's gothic romance as she narrates her story as she writes. I didn't like some of the references here but they are just brief and not persistent in the story. The story wasn't complicated or jumbled with other sub-plots, with the exception Edie's story as she was writing. So when you make time for it, give this a listen at the Internet Archive's website, archive.org.

Kaite Hims wrote 'Earthquake Girl' and was directed by Kate Rowland. Now the main cast as follows: Saskia Reeves plays Edie, Jane Hollowood plays Lila, Barbara Marten plays the library supervisor, Burt Caesar plays Errol Maroon, Jean Alexander plays Mrs Penny, and Phillip Rham plays the protagonist in Edie's story.

In the future, I will be reviewing more excellent audio dramas to share with you that can be listened anywhere. Audio dramas are captivating experiences that grow your imagination and should not be ignored. Read my other article 'The Benefits of Listening to Audio Dramas' to get the idea as to why you should listen to them. It contains insights and compelling reasons as to why audio dramas are worth listening to. Also you get a few recommendations as to which dramas to listen to first. Lastly I thank you for taking the time to read my article; I hope you enjoyed it.
