Fear is the mind-killer, in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic, Dune. After nearly a year-long delay, the highly anticipated third adaption of Frank Herbert's novel has finally been released. Dubbed as an unfilmable movie, Denis Villeneuve will awe the audience with the film's visual, making one wish to see it on the biggest screen possible in theaters. However, the audience can still watch Dune on the small screen, on HBO Max with a subscription.

2013 saw the release of Jodorowsky's Dune, a documentary film that explores director Alejandro Jodorowsky's unsuccessful attempt to adapt the novel in the mid-1970s. After the film rights expired, the cult classic David Lynch’s Dune was released in 1984. Like the Snyder Cut, due to studio executives meddling, the Lynch version was a box office flop.

#ReleaseTheLynchCut. The Sci-fi channel release in 2000 a mini-series and a sequel series based on the novels. Although there were great moments in the 1984 film and the mini-series was an improved faithful adaptation. Fans of the book have never had a film adaptation that the book deserves, until now.

Set in the year 10191, The Emperor assigns Duke Leto of House Atreides, ruler of the ocean planet Caladan, to replace House Harkonnen as rulers of Arrakis, a harsh desert planet that is also the only source of "spice," a precious substance. The story of the film center on Paul Atreides, the Duke’s son and future heir of the ancient house. Since his youth, Paul’s mother Lady Jessica has trained him in the ways of the Bene Gesserit, a mysterious guild with supernatural-like powers.

The film features an ensemble of talented actors and actresses throughout the film. Director Denis Villeneuve, show once again he has an eye for casting the perfect actors and actresses into the right roles. Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides has a strong screen presence even against his veteran co-actors. Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica carries the film's emotional tension and is the heart of the film. Stellan Skarsgard and Charlotte Rampling both stole every scene they appear in. Newcomer, Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Dr. Liet-Kyne, in a gender swap role, proves that as long as the actor or actress is good, people won’t mind the role being swapped and Brewster give a great performance. Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem are always a delight to see and give excellent performances. Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa, does well, Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa as they always do, not bad but not great either.

Director Denis Villeneuve gave the audience awe-inspiringly impressive visuals, which were mostly practical effects as opposed to CGI, much like fellow director Christopher Nolan. The production designs of Dune are atmospheric and distinctive to the film. Despite many of the concept art from Jodorowsky’s Dune being used later on in sci-fi films like Star Wars, Dune designs never felt too familiar. Filming with IMAX cameras, the cinematography of Greig Fraser gave the film an even more overwhelming scope. The sound design and music of composer Hans Zimmer help the audience immerse into the world Dune, by creating unorthodox and experimental new instruments and eerie sounding female vocals.

Despite how excellent the film was, it was not without its flaws. The pacing of the story, although beautifully written by Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, and Eric Roth, at a few times felt slow and dragged out, but never felt it was a long film. Audiences with no prior knowledge of the previous adaptions or books may find it hard to follow the lore and names of places and characters. However, the writers did a great job making it much easier to follow. A few have had issues with the film’s ending, it is understandable where they are coming from. However, The Fellowship of The Ring, Infinity War, a couple of the Star Wars movies, ended in a similar style to that of Dune, and no one criticize those movies’ endings.

The verdict is that Denis Villeneuve created a beautiful, impressive, breath-taking film. A film many have been waiting for in the midst of the tired and overplayed Marvel films, it was refreshing to not hear a pointless Marvel-esque joke thrown in randomly in a movie. With an impressive opening weekend box office number and decent HBO Max viewership, WB and Legendary Films has officially greenlit a sequel and as the tagline suggests, this is only the beginning…
