DOWN AND OUT IN SCHITT’S CREEK

Love Can Make You Richer

If you loved DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS produced and directed by Paul Mazursky about a “Rags to Riches” homeless man Jerry Baskin who moves in with millionaires family Barbara and Dave Whitman played by Oscar winning Bette Midler and Oscar winning Richard Dreyfuss then you should watch the multiple Golden Globe and Emmy winning prime time network series SCHITT’S CREEK written and starring the famed actor, writer, producer Eugene Levy of the AMERICAN PIE franchise, DOG SHOW and WAITING FOR GUFFMAN to name a few and his son Dan Levy.

Like Mazursky pokes fun at a “Rags to Riches” addition to the Whitman family Levy achieves poking fun at the Roses— a family that goes from “Riches to Rags” when they move from Los Angeles California having lived the “high life” as millionaires to SCHITT’S CREEK where they now live in a Motel off a dirt road in town. Losing their assets to an IRS tax audit the family of four played by Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy choose to go to SCHITT’S CREEK because it’s the only thing left that they own...a town.

Both Mazursky in DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS and Levy in SCHITT’S CREEK definitely show in their works what matters most in life is love, no matter how much money you have.

Donning only the amount of glamorous clothing their luggage sets could hold, the Rose family sticks out among the rural town residents of SCHITT’S CREEK who now have to help them adjust to their penniless “down-and-out” lives.

The closeness between parents Johnny Rose played by Eugene Levy and Moira Rose played by Catherine O’Hara and their “adult aged” children David Rose played by Dan Levy and Alexis Rose played by Annie Murphy is not only endearing but crazy funny. The four play off of each other like an ensemble orchestra playing a classical symphony. The quartet's timing is impeccable.

The humor and finesse of the show's writing keeps you laughing while the production and costume design also add without any words needed. The award winning production team work is self evident but it doesn’t end there…

The ensemble cast members include local town residents like the witty Motel clerk Stevie Budd played by Emily Harris where the Rose’s live, the local Mayor who the town is named after Roland Schitt and his wife Jocelyn Schitt played by Chris Elliott and Jennifer Robertson, the local “cafe” waitress Twyla Sands plaid by Sarah Levy where the family eats every single meal, the animal vet Ted Mullens played by Dustin Milligan who becomes Alexis’ love interest, the realtor turned general store owner Patrick Brewer played by Noah Reid who becomes the love interest of David Rose and the town brain Ronnie Lee played Karen Robinson. There’s even a Wedding! As the Rose’s meet these residents of SCHITT’S CREEK the series only gets “richer.”

Levy’s series has won Golden Globes for Best Television Series-Musical or Comedy and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series-Musical or Comedy Eugene Levy. It has also won Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Eugene Levy, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Catherine O’Hara, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series Dan Levy, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Annie Murphy, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series Andrew Cividino and Dan Levy for episode “Happy Ending,“ Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series Dan Levy for episode “Happy Ending,” Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series Lisa Parasyn, Jon Comerford and Pop TV and finally Outstanding Contemporary Costumes Debra Hanson and Darci Cheyne for episode “Happy Episode.”

Airing on CBS Television for six seasons from January 13, 2015 to April 7, 2020 for 80 episodes the show can be watched on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Levy’s SCHITT’S CREEK like Mazursky’s DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS is a must see not only for its multiple Golden Globe and Emmy award winning series production excellence but because the show always leaves you with it’s overriding mantra that in the end all we need is love, something money simply cannot buy…
