Ch-17

Heather launched to her feet, hauling Rebecca up with her, ready to run when needed. “Ah, you’ve found a friend, how charming.” the man said with a sickening smirk. “This will make it even more fun.” He threw Jacob away and made a move for them, but Jacob grabbed his shirt and threw him against the wall. They tackled each other while Penny ran to call the police.

“There’s no time for that! Get Rebecca to safety, I’ll find you when it’s safe.” Jacob shouted, trying to pin the man. Heather nodded and raced out the door, Rebecca hopelessly protesting for him to come too. Penny rushed out no later with the keys as Heather secured Rebecca in the car. They drove fast and furious, but Rebecca wouldn’t stop pleading for them to turn back and help Jacob. But Penny kept on driving, not looking back.

Back at the house, Jacob was in a mess. He didn’t know that the man knew about spirits and how to imprison them. He threw Jacob against the wall and drew a rosary which paralyzed Jacob with its own force. As Jacob struggled helplessly, the stranger drew out an old book that held all sorts of dark spells. With just a few simple words, Jacob felt as if someone was running him through with a sword. He screamed agony, his body going rigid.

“Call her back.” The man ordered. “If you do, I'll stop the pain.” Jacob refused. He would never put Rebecca in danger.

“Fine, then. I’ll get her to come to me.” he sighed. He then went outside, leaving Jacob in pain, unable to move. Looking up at the clearing sky, the man put two fingers in his mouth and gave a high pitched whistle. A falcon swooped down from nowhere and landed on the man’s outstretched arm. He put a rolled up piece of paper in a tube strapped to the bird’s back and told him to find Rebecca and bring her the letter. How he would find her, Jacob didn’t know.

The man came back in and stood by Jacob, smiling. It was impressive that this spirit was still conscious, leading the man to believe that Jacob was an older and well adjusted kind. The man mused he’d find some very beneficial ways to use Jacob’s potent spiritual energy. “Pathetic attempt for Rebecca to use a ghost to try and protect her. She should have known better. I intend to kill her you know, for interfering with our work.” Jacob looked up at the man through his hair, horrified.

“No…” Jacob gasped. The man laughed.

“Oh yes. The best part though,” He grabbed Jacob’s throat and whispered in his ear, “…will be you, helplessly watching every…single…moment.” Releasing the Dark Magic, Jacob crumpled to the floor, barely able to keep his eyes open at that point.

The man hauled Jacob up and carried him to his car, throwing the spirit in the back seat. The man turned the key then slammed the gas peddle to the floor. With a quick jerk of the steering wheel, the car skidded on the wet road around a corner, the force of the turn causing Jacob to fall out of his seat and onto the floor. He cursed his weakness and wished he had been more vigilant against Dark Magic. Being on Earth had him feeling safe with very few people knowing how to use the source, unlike in Dnaleri. What were the chances that two men who wished Rebecca harm knew how to control Dark Magic as well as harm spirits such as himself? It didn’t matter though, what little energy he had twisted in his chest in a form of heartache. He prayed to Tamara to keep Rebecca safe, to not let her find him. Jacob didn’t care what happened just as long as Rebecca was able to live and be happy.

The spirit heard his plea, but there was nothing she could do. The driving forces of the two worlds were at work, this was just the beginning of their journey.
