Disney+'s Ironheart Sees Ryan Coogler Join The Production Team

A Welcome Addition

By Culture SlatePublished 2 years ago 3 min read

A new hero is heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), one who may leave the fandom in disarray, and one who will first make her appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. But that’s not the only connection to Wakanda this character has. In addition to being an African American, which isn’t that much of a connection, a Wakanda Forever production team member has joined the production team for her Disney+ series. You know who we’re talking about if you’ve read the title of this article. Ironheart has just added Ryan Coogler to its production team.

The series is still a ways away, but while we wait, we can discuss some more about Coogler and Ironheart and their impact on the fanbase. With April Fools day out of the way, we can talk about these subjects without a care in the world about who will think we’re joking.

Who is Ironheart? The answer is that Ironheart is the superhero identity of Riri Williams, an African American engineering student. During her studies at MIT, she created a powered suit similar to Iron Man’s, which actually caught the attention of Tony Stark himself. This led to a partnership that lasted for the better part of the decade. Riri was met with a decidedly mixed response from readers; we may never know how much of this was due to anti-black racism.

However, we know that an actress has already been attached to play her in Wakanda Forever, Dominique Thorne. A relatively newer actress, Thorne is the latest in a long line of lesser-known actors getting their breakthrough in the MCU, though where her career will go next, we’ll just have to wait and see. How will fans react to this new character coming to the MCU? Naturally, there will be some arguments, but hopefully, things will remain civil for the most part.

What about director and writer Ryan Coolger? Ryan Coolger made his debut in the 2013 film Fruitvale Station. From there, he directed the Rocky spin-off Creed, about the son of deceased boxing champion Apollo Creed and his training with his boxing coach, the iconic Rocky Balboa. This led to his biggest success yet, Black Panther, which, while far from the first successful African American superhero movie, proved to be the highest-grossing one at the box office to date.

Coolger is currently onboard to write Wakanda Forever, which will introduce Ironheart. With Shuri's genius-level tech knowledge, it's easy to see Riri looking up to her as a mentor. With the death of Chadwick Boseman, no one knows how the film, due for release this year, will address it. Can Wakanda Forever break its predecessor’s records at the box office? It’s too soon to say, but once we get a trailer, at least some fans should be excited for the film.

Ironheart’s Disney+ show is still in development. Disney+ has been a good platform for original series throughout Disney’s various IPs, not just Marvel shows; Star Wars and Pixar have also found themselves with new shows on the platform. Marvel Studios has done an admiral job of creating content focusing on lesser-known characters. Of course, this hasn’t gotten rid of theatrical releases, with both Disney and Sony planning a slate of new releases in the near future. Marvel Comics, though, seems to be in a bit of a slump, though we won’t name any reasons as to why. Still, no one can deny the impact they maintain on our pop culture landscape.
