Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day: A Thought-Provoking Alien Mystery That Takes Its Time.

I recently went to watch Disclosure Day, the latest film from legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg. Whenever Spielberg releases a new movie, expectations are naturally high. After all, this is the man who gave us classics like Jurassic Park, E.T., Schindler’s List, The Terminal, and the Indiana Jones series. His filmography is filled with unforgettable movies, so when I heard he was making another alien-based story, I was excited to see what he had created this time.

The title itself is interesting. If I explain it in simple words, “Disclosure” means revealing a secret. So Disclosure Day basically means the day when a hidden truth is finally revealed.

The story revolves around a young woman who works as a weather reporter on a news channel. One day, while delivering a routine weather update, something strange happens. In the middle of the broadcast, she suddenly begins speaking in a completely unknown language. From that moment onward, the movie starts connecting several fascinating elements, including human-alien contact, cybersecurity threats, human emotions, and a potential danger to the entire world.

Now, what exactly happens after that is something you should discover in the movie yourself.

One thing you should know before watching is that the film runs for almost two and a half hours, and honestly, you can feel that length. During the first fifteen minutes, you might even find yourself confused. I actually wondered whether I had walked into the wrong movie because it takes some time before the story starts making sense.

However, as the layers gradually unfold, the narrative becomes clearer. The film slowly reveals its secrets and starts exploring an interesting idea: What if we discovered that we are not alone? What if there is something out there watching us, observing us, and perhaps even trying to communicate with us?

Since this is a science-fiction movie, there are plenty of fictional concepts throughout the story. Some of them are fascinating, while others require a lot of suspension of disbelief. In fact, the movie raises several intriguing questions but doesn't always provide satisfying answers.

That is probably one of my biggest issues with the film.

Despite being called Disclosure Day, the movie doesn't offer a complete sense of closure. It feels like the story intentionally leaves certain mysteries unresolved, possibly setting up future possibilities. While that approach works for some viewers, others may find it frustrating.

Still, there are many scenes that keep you engaged throughout the runtime. The action sequences are well executed, and the train sequence in particular stands out. Emily Blunt delivers a strong performance and manages to hold your attention whenever she appears on screen. Her acting adds emotional weight to many of the film's key moments.

Spielberg also brings back some of the emotional storytelling style that made E.T. such a beloved classic. He once again tries to connect alien encounters with deeply human emotions, creating moments that feel personal rather than purely spectacular.

Visually, the movie looks fantastic. To be honest, when you're watching a Spielberg film, you rarely have to worry about cinematography, production design, or visual presentation. The visuals and overall aesthetic are exactly what you would expect from a filmmaker of his caliber.

That being said, the pacing is definitely not for everyone.

The movie is a slow burn. It takes its time building the mystery and developing its ideas. There are several long conversations that occasionally interrupt the momentum. At times, it feels like a train of excitement is moving forward at full speed, only to be stopped by lengthy dialogue scenes.

Because of that, I wouldn't recommend this film to viewers who primarily enjoy fast-paced commercial entertainers packed with action and humor. This movie requires patience.

At the same time, it doesn't feel like a typical alien invasion film either. It follows its own path, focusing more on mystery, emotions, and questions rather than providing straightforward answers. That uniqueness is one of its biggest strengths.

Before I end this review, here's one useful piece of information: there's absolutely no need to stay after the credits. The film does not feature any post-credit scenes.

Overall, I watched Disclosure Day partly because I didn't want to miss out on a new Spielberg release, and I can say that while the movie isn't perfect, it offers an interesting experience for science-fiction fans. It's visually impressive, emotionally driven, and full of intriguing ideas, even if it occasionally struggles with pacing and closure.

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.

If you've already watched Disclosure Day, I'd love to know your thoughts. Did you enjoy its slow-burning mystery, or were you hoping for more answers by the end?
