Director For The MCU's 'Deadpool 3' Confirmed

As Deadpool prepares to make his leap into the MCU, fans are anxiously awaiting news about the third film in the franchise, and the first one to cross into the realm of the Avengers. Crossing these creative borders will be a challenge for all those involved in this unique cinematic undertaking, answering in-universe questions of where Deadpool has been up until now and why the other MCU characters haven't crossed paths with the mercenary before. With those challenges in mind, fans have been eager to see who will be behind the camera for Deadpool 3, assisting Ryan Reynolds in bringing the merc with a mouth into the MCU.

Fortunately, news about the crew of the film, specifically the director, has been obtained. Returning to work with Reynolds after the success of Free Guy, Shawn Levy is reportedly in talks with Disney to helm the next chapter of Deadpool's story. Levy has a unique slate of successes in his recent past. Beside Free Guy, a hilarious and endearing story of a video game NPC discovering conscious thought, Levy also directed episodes of Netflix's hit series, Stranger Things, and The Adam Project (also starring Reynolds), which is receiving positive reviews. Levy joins Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese on the crew of the film. Wernick and Reese both wrote the first two Deadpool scripts and are now hard at work on the third.

While the cast and crew of the film look stellar so far, many questions still surround the franchise after Disney acquired multiple assets formerly belonging to Fox. How will they handle their new slate of characters, including the X-Men and the forbidden "M word"? No, not "midi-chlorians", I'm referring to "mutants". Formerly forbidden to be spoken of in the MCU, mutants join the ranks of eternals, celestials, and vampires, all recent additions to the MCU that will almost certainly herald a dramatic in-universe shift from the old days of Tony Stark and Steve Rodgers. It is rumored that this change of in-universe lore and focus will begin in earnest with Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will release on May 6th. This film promises to be a wild ride and could be the first time we see many characters, including Deadpool, set foot into the MCU.

It will be a tall task indeed to successfully integrate Deadpool into the same universe as Thor, Dr. Strange, and Spider-Man. Even in the comics, Deadpool is a unique character, breaking the 4th wall and directly addressing the audience, reveling in murder and mayhem, and generally going where few other comic book characters dare to go. The Deadpool films already have a history of angering parents, who think that they are going to see another family-friendly MCU entry, something the kids can enjoy, full of action, adventure, and aliens. What they don't expect is a sex-scene montage as Wade Wilson and his girlfriend, Vanessa, celebrate a years worth of holidays in the bedroom. This is clearly the style the Deadpool films go for, in addition to the gratuitous violence. Blending these two very different, yet equally beloved film franchises will be a tall task indeed.

Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds have already proven they are a dynamic team on set. After their recent successes, both as a team and individually, they have earned the benefit of the doubt that they will turn in a film that will be a well-blended balance of Deadpool and MCU. With the director, writers, and star for Deadpool 3 all presumably in the process of developing the threequel, fans will have to wait and see what other cast and crew members are announced, and what cameos (from Deadpool and MCU alike) audiences be treated to.
