Did the Avengers Go to Another Timeline That Wasn't Shown in 'Endgame?'

This might be the best 'Endgame' easter egg.

Avengers: Endgame is the biggest movie ever made, and, understandably, it might have the most easter eggs in a single movie. However, arguably the best easter egg from the film may have just been found four months after the film's release.

Reddit user u/kobikwahbz posted this easter egg on the r/marvel studies subreddit on the 12th of August, and it has amassed thousands of upvotes.

The post mentions that when the 2014 version of Nebula used the time machine to bring back the 2014 version of Thanos while the Avengers were distracted, there seems to be a history section which shows the recent times people have visited.

As you can see on the right, it shows the different times visited by different Avengers. The third time shows the year 2009, which is likely the time Scott Lang accidentally visits when doing the test runs. The first time shows the year 2012, which is when multiple Avengers went back to get the space stone and the time stone. However, the second time shows the year 2988, which was never shown in the movie. This begs the question, "Who went to the year 2988 and for what reasons?"

Marvel fans quickly speculated that the Avengers have no reason to go to 2988 AD, as they have no idea what is there, but they do know what happened in 2988 BC. In Thor: The Dark World, when Malekith the accursed shows up, Odin talks about the first time he dealt with Malekith during the first battle of Svartalfheim. In 2988 BC, the Convergence began and the Dark Elves began their plan to extract the Aether so they could use its power to return the universe to darkness. However, an Asgardian army led by Bor, Odin's father, confronted the Dark Elves and fought them on Svartalfheim. The Dark Elves got pushed back by the Asgardians and their plans had been foiled, forcing the survivors to go into hibernation. The Asgardians then hid the Aether to make sure the Dark Elves couldn't get to it.

Since the Aether contained the reality stone, the Avengers probably got the idea to go to 2988 BC in order to get the reality stone for their use in the infinity gauntlet; however, they probably scraped that idea as it might have been too complicated and dangerous to sneak into one of the biggest known battles in the universe in order to steal what the Dark Elves and Asgardians are fighting for. They probably also realised that it would have been easier to extract the Aether from Jane Foster in 2013, where they didn't have to deal with any Dark Elves.

However, it does still show that someone possibly went to 2988 BC, so the question begs, "Did an Avenger go to the battle, see the chaos, and immediately went back home not wanting to risk their death?" Maybe Thor went to the battle, saw his Grandfather Bor, and didn't want to risk disrupting the timeline any further. Many theories could be made about this; but unfortunately, we may never know.

This easter egg does bring up an interesting point about how many more unknown easter eggs there are and how long will it take to find them all. Will we ever find all the possible easter eggs? Do the Russo brothers even know how many easter eggs there are? Or did they confuse themselves with the sheer amount of them and forget? Will someone break into their houses and steal the list from the secret safe they have under the floorboards of the living room? Probably not, since I made the last one up.
