Deja 'View' - Where Have We Seen King Tommen Before On 'Game of Thrones'?

We have all heard of family resemblance, but Game of Thrones may have stretched that link just a little too far this time. How have we not noticed that King Tommen Baratheon (Dean-Charles Chapman) already appeared on the show way back in Season 3, and as a different character...mind blown!

Swapped at Birth?

No, you haven't switched shows, this isn't some Futurama time paradox, or a trip to the island from LOST. The aforementioned character swap sees Chapman play another golden haired Lannister, and weirdly, his own cousin - Martyn Lannister. In a family full of incest this is hardly shocking, but if you still don't believe me, check it out!

The doomed Martyn Lannister appeared in the Season 3 episodes “Walk of Punishment” and “Kissed by Fire", shortly before being offed by the Karstark family:

Willem Lannister: Is this a rescue?

Rickard Karstark: Lannister filth!

Martyn Lannister: Please, I didn't do anything! I'm just a squire!

Even being friendly with the kind-hearted Talisa Stark couldn't help Martyn and his brother Willem. Don't weep for Martyn though, justice was his! For the act of brutality, Robb Stark behead Lord Rickard Karstark in front of his family, inadvertently turning the Karstark's allegiance to House Bolton. This is a storyline STILL going on now as we head into Episode 9's "Battle of the Bastards", even though everyone has forgotten about poor Martyn Lannister.

New Blood

Despite his tenure as Martyn Lannister being short, Dean-Charles Chapman must have impressed the Thrones crew in his two-episode stint. Chapman returned as a newly recast Tommen Baratheon, in Season 4's "The Lion and the Rose", just in time for his brother's grisly demise. Replacing Callum Wharry from Seasons 1 & 2, Chapman has played the role of Tommen ever since. It looks like Tommen's time on the show could be running out as he tries to keep order from the Faith in King's Landing. A prophecy from Maggy the Frog has already promised that Cersei Lannister will wrap all three of her children in golden shrouds, and c'mon, we always knew it wasn't going to be Tommen on the Throne in the end.

Family Ties

Season 6 has also heralded the return of Cersei's Uncle Kevan Lannister (Ian Gelder), who as Hand of the King is spending a lot of time with young Tommen at the moment. Why has he not noticed that his great nephew looks the spitting image of his deceased son? Next week's promo for the episode "No One" looks like a Lannister/Faith standoff, so who knows, maybe Kevan or Tommen could be joining young Martyn in one of the seven hells! Who is next to be recast, is it Ser Pounce (M.I.A)?
