When news broke of another installment in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise undergoing pre-production, fans were on edge with anticipation for what was to come. Then, upon the release of the first teaser trailer and the confirmation of Orlando Bloom returning to portray Will Turner in Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, we were blown away.

The announcement sparked massive fan conversations on how Bloom's character will return to the Pirates franchise. The last time we saw Will Turner was at the end of Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End where he sailed off into the sunset as the new captain of the Flying Dutchman.

As Captain, Will Turner Has A Duty He Can't Ignore — Or Can He?

Having taken the life of previous captain, Davy Jones, Turner was reluctantly forced into the role of sea-fairer to souls lost at sea. In layman's terms, Turner's duties are to ferry the souls of those who die at sea to the afterlife.

While it appeared as though Will Turner would be stuck doing this job for an eternity, his resurgence in Dead Men Tell No Tales suggests otherwise.

Considering that Will Turner cannot take time off from his job as captain of the Flying Dutchman, there shouldn't be any reason for him to leave his duties to join the central conflict of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, unless an event so catastrophic results in him being pulled away.

The Trident Of Poseidon

The focal point of Dead Men Tell No Tales will follow Jack Sparrow as he searches for the Trident Of Poseidon, indicated in the official synopsis for the film:

"Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas."

Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) POTC: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Aside from what Sparrow's goals are in Dead Men Tell No Tales, the reintroduction of Will Turner is of most importance.

Is Will Turner going to be helping Jack? If so, the Flying Dutchman would have to be completely destroyed — releasing Will Turner from his obligations — or, in the far-off chance of Will discovering a method to release himself from the Flying Dutchman, he could be replaced by any member of his crew. This would allow him to return to the center of Pirates Of The Caribbean universe.

What Will Become Of The Flying Dutchman?

With Turner apparently departing from the Flying Dutchman, it raises another, more important question: what happened to ship itself? The seas still need it to ferry lost souls into the afterlife, so without Will Turner as captain, someone else is going to have to pick up the slack. As to who that person may be, or what the fate of the Flying Dutchman is, will be divulged when Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales hits theaters.
