Dead Men Tell No Tales: Is Johnny Depp Giving the Pirates Spotlight Back to Orlando Bloom?

It's an epic story that will see the return of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) to the center of the franchise.

The pirates are back on deck for Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and it looks like an epic story is about to unfold, judging by the teaser trailer that dropped unexpectedly during last night's Fear the Walking Dead season finale:

It's an epic story that will also see the return of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) to the center of the franchise. Not only is Bloom returning to the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise but he'll be rejoined by his former Pirates Of The Caribbean cast-mates, Geoffrey Rush and Johnny Depp (who is only in the trailer as an illustration). They will also be joined by newcomer Javier Bardem, who's set to play the villain in Dead Men Tell No Tales. Here's the official synopsis:

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Jack Sparrow Is Going to Need Some Help

From what's discernible in the plot synopsis, Jack Sparrow is once again in a heap of trouble and the only way for him to get out of it is to inadvertently save the world. If Jack wants to save himself, he's going to have to act selflessly and stop Captain Salazar from hunting down every pirate, including himself. Seeing as how Salazar broke out of the Devil's Triangle and is on the hunt for pirates, Jack Sparrow will need help from some old friends if he wants to stay alive. One friend in particular might be able to help him more than any other, that friend being Will Turner.

Will Turner currently resides as Captain of the Flying Dutchman, the sea-fairer of souls between the realm of the living and the realm of the dead. And accounting for the time he's spent as Captain of the Flying Dutchman, he probably has more innate knowledge of the sea that'll benefit Jack Sparrow's quest for the legendary Trident Of Poseidon. Being an object capable of controlling the tides of the sea, the Trident Of Poseidon will definitely be a useful item to possess when attempting to save the world.

Of course, we have to wait and see how Will Turner enters into the conflict because it won't be as simple as Jack Sparrow calling on him. There'll probably some type of cataclysm that calls for Will Turner to put aside his duties as Captain of the Flying Dutchman in order to stop Salazar from enacting a massacre of pirates. More importantly, the news of Will Turner's return to the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise will grant us an opportunity revisit the events of Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End, which saw Will Turner ride off into the sunset on the Flying Dutchman.

Can Orlando Bloom Save the World Again?

The last we saw of Will Turner, he was on his way to an eternity of fairing souls between the realm of the living to the realm of the dead. His imminent return in Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales indicates that an even more important task is at hand: saving the world. Turner saved it once before, but this time around, he may be stepping into a conflict that is far bigger.

Then there's also the matter of Will Turner's heart.

Turner left the chest with his heart in it to Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley) at the conclusion of Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End, but seeing as how she won't be returning for the newest installment in the franchise, someone else will likely be in possession of Will Turner's heart. Maybe Will's son (who is presumably going to be portrayed by Brendan Thwaites in Dead Men Tell No Tales)?

It's also possible Captain Salazar will come into possession of Will's heart and will force him into committing atrocities similar to the ones committed by Davy Jones. That being said, Turner's heart would definitely be enough leverage for Captain Salazar to use in coercing him. In doing so, Salazar would have the Flying Dutchman at his disposal for whatever nefarious purpose he has in mind — which, we already know, involves the eradication of every pirate on the planet.

Turner's Role In 'Dead Men Tell No Tales' Will Definitely Be Pivotal To the Story

Regardless of speculative points, there's a variety of directions the plot could go in but the most plausible scenario will see Will Turner assisting Jack Sparrow in retrieving the Trident Of Poseidon in order to keep the world's pirate population from being demolished by Captain Salazar's wrath.

Let's face it, without pirates to roam the seas, Will Turner's duty as fairer of souls would be nonexistent. He'd no longer have a supply of souls to carry between worlds, so he's going to have to help Jack Sparrow in stopping Captain Salazar. Otherwise, Will Turner can see himself to an eternity of nothingness with no souls to ferry between worlds. But there's also a very good possibility that Captain Salazar will have some leverage over Will Turner, enough leverage to make sure Turner does what he commands — potentially turning Will Turner into an unintended antagonist of the film.
