DC: The Bloody Valentine Movie Review

DC: The Bloody Valentine has finally arrived in theatres, including a Hindi dubbed version. The film immediately grabs attention for one major reason — filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj steps in front of the camera as the lead actor, playing Devadas opposite Wamiqa Gabbi as Chandra.

But if you are expecting another Vikram, Kaithi or Leo-style experience simply because Lokesh Kanagaraj is involved, you should adjust your expectations. This is a very different film.

Directed by Arun Matheswaran, DC: The Bloody Valentine attempts to mix romance, crime, violence, action and obsession into one dark modern-day love story.

So, does the experiment work? Here is my complete DC: The Bloody Valentine review.

What Is DC: The Bloody Valentine About?

At the centre of the story are Devadas and Chandra, played by Lokesh Kanagaraj and Wamiqa Gabbi.

Their relationship is far removed from the usual sweet cinematic romance. This is a love story surrounded by blood, danger and obsession.

The movie begins with a disturbing and mysterious incident that pushes Devadas and Chandra into a dangerous world. Devadas soon finds himself fighting not only for the person he loves but also for survival.

At the same time, he becomes involved with a family whose life has been destroyed by police brutality and corruption.

Devadas and his companions attempt to protect the family while facing powerful enemies. What follows is a violent journey involving revenge, loyalty, sacrifice and love.

The biggest question is how far Devadas is willing to go for Chandra — and what happens when love slowly starts turning into obsession.

I will avoid revealing the major twists because this movie works better when you experience its surprises in the theatre.

Lokesh Kanagaraj as Devadas

One of the biggest attractions of DC: The Bloody Valentine is seeing Lokesh Kanagaraj as a full-fledged lead actor.

Audiences know him primarily as the filmmaker behind movies such as Kaithi, Vikram, Leo and Coolie, so watching him perform on the other side of the camera naturally creates curiosity.

As Devadas, Lokesh gets a rugged and violent character. The role suits the dark world created for the movie, particularly during its action-heavy portions.

This isn't a conventional heroic character surrounded by clean romance and colourful songs. Devadas belongs to a brutal world where almost every decision has consequences.

Wamiqa Gabbi as Chandra

Wamiqa Gabbi plays Chandra, and her relationship with Devadas forms the emotional backbone of the film.

Devadas and Chandra's story is essentially the movie's version of a modern, twisted and violent romance.

Instead of presenting an old-school tragic love story, DC places its characters inside a world filled with crime, alcohol, weapons and death.

Wamiqa brings an important emotional presence to the film, and her chemistry with Lokesh helps sell some of its more dramatic moments.

Action Becomes the Real Hero

Although DC: The Bloody Valentine is promoted heavily around the relationship between Devadas and Chandra, there are stretches where you may almost forget that you are watching a love story.

Why?

Because the action completely takes over.

The movie delivers brutal fights, guns, blood and several mass moments designed specifically for the big screen.

If you enjoy dark Tamil action cinema with stylish presentation, there is plenty here to keep you entertained.

The violence is also one of the reasons this isn't a movie for children. DC: The Bloody Valentine has received an A certificate, so viewers should expect mature and violent material.

Anirudh Ravichander’s BGM Is Outstanding

Now we need to talk about one of the strongest elements of DC — Anirudh Ravichander's background score.

Anirudh absolutely goes for it.

There are scenes where the visuals are already intense, but the BGM takes their impact to another level. During action sequences in particular, the score gives the movie the mass energy audiences expect from a big-screen action film.

At certain points, it feels as though Anirudh's music is doing half the work of creating the atmosphere.

Fans who loved his energetic work in films such as Vikram and Coolie should find plenty to enjoy here.

For me, the background score is easily one of the biggest highlights of DC: The Bloody Valentine.

Is DC Like Vikram, Kaithi or Leo?

No.

And this is important before you buy a ticket.

Lokesh Kanagaraj may be the face of DC, but Arun Matheswaran is the director, so audiences shouldn't go in expecting another entry in the style of Lokesh's own directorial films.

DC has its own identity.

It combines a modern tragic romance with violent action and thriller elements. The film isn't as strong overall as something like Vikram or Kaithi, but it is also clearly trying to achieve something different.

The romance may not work equally well for everyone, but when the movie switches into its action-thriller mode, it becomes much more entertaining.

What Works in DC: The Bloody Valentine?

The movie's biggest strengths are its stylish action sequences, dark atmosphere, Lokesh Kanagaraj's screen presence, Wamiqa Gabbi's performance and, above everything else, Anirudh Ravichander's powerful music.

The unusual combination of romance and extreme violence also prevents the film from feeling like a completely routine love story.

What Could Have Been Better?

The romantic side of the story isn't always as powerful as the action surrounding it.

Because the thriller and action portions are so dominant, the central love story occasionally takes a back seat. Viewers expecting a deeply emotional romance may therefore find the film slightly uneven.

The movie has strong individual moments, but it doesn't consistently reach the level of the very best films associated with Lokesh Kanagaraj's name.

Is DC: The Bloody Valentine Worth Watching in Hindi?

If you enjoy violent action thrillers, dark romance and mass cinema, then yes, DC: The Bloody Valentine is worth considering for a theatrical watch.

The Hindi dubbed version makes the film accessible to a wider audience, while Anirudh's music and the large-scale action benefit considerably from a cinema sound system.

Just remember that this is an A-rated film, so it isn't suitable for children.

Final Verdict

DC: The Bloody Valentine is an entertaining but imperfect romantic action thriller.

Lokesh Kanagaraj's transition from filmmaker to lead actor makes the movie immediately interesting, while Wamiqa Gabbi gives Chandra an important presence in the story. Arun Matheswaran fills the film with violence, atmosphere and unconventional romance, but it is Anirudh Ravichander's thunderous background score that often steals the show.

The film may not make you forget Vikram or Kaithi, but it offers enough action, style and intensity to deliver a solid theatrical experience.

Now the wait continues for Kaithi 2 and Vikram 2.
